What left wing newspaper did you get that from? (Only kidding!!!! We actually agree on something).Actually it is CHEAPER to send a person to life in prison than to sentnce him to death. That is because there are automatic appeals, and they cost millions of dollars.
Strange but true.
Beowulf is right about this. It is much more expensive to get the death penalty. The appeals process is probably the worst financially. There is also the automatic appeals process so if the person says 'I did it, I'm guilty, I feel like crap about it and I deserve to die' it is still automatically appealed whether that person requests it or not. Think of how much money was spent on the Peterson case...then think about doing that multiple times.
Then you have the jail time during the trial and while awaiting death row. My state has one death row inmate that was sentenced on May 15th 1984. There may be some older cases but that is one that I'm familiar with. I believe his latest appeal was in 2000. I don't know if there are any more appeals available to him. My point being that even with a death sentence, they don't just take you to the other end of the hall and finish you off.
In the Peterson case, I thought he was guilty as hell. However, I was surprised when the jury came back with a guilty plea. I thought there was more evidence against OJ than Peterson. Goes to show you never know what you'll get from a jury. I was also surprised they charged him with the second murder to begin with (although I'm glad they did). Many states, including my state, do not recognize an unborn fetus as a child. I'm not trying to get into any abortion debate, but in a lot of states, he would have been charged only once.
As for why some cases get notoriety and others don't, I believe it is more related to cash flow than it is to race (There have been well published stories of black victims). His parents are loaded who also had prominent friends. Most trials don't last this long. If any of us here were in Petersons shoes, it would probably been open and shut. A lot of money was spent on this trial and his defense and that garnered some attention.
Also, if you all recall early on, Peterson was begging for media attention. At that time, his wife was just missing and he was on many news outlets pleading for her safe return.
It backfired when they started looking at him as a suspect. I also believe that with the abortion debate going on in todays society, additional coverage was given because of what was riding on the murder of an unborn child. These little things in the beginning sort of snowballed into more media coverage. The more people saw, the more they wanted...and that is what often drives media coverage.
