okay ad'ers. ask me anything (but be nice! :))

prior to receiving ci's, i used an ssp.

however, since i'm now able to hear and communicate orally, i go clothes shopping, grocery shopping, to medical appointments and school by myself. my sister takes me grocery shopping during the winter months so i don't have to worry about traveling in the cold or accidentally slipping on the ice when pulling my shopping cart.

the only exception to my not being alone at medical appointments is with my neurologist. since he has an accent, i have alot of difficulty understanding him, so i use a tactile terp during our appointments.

i think it's great that you want to work with the deafblind! I wish you all the best! :D

Cool!
It's very nice of your sister to take you to grocery shopping. Yes, I agree with you on the accident part, which is not safe for deaf/blinds. (I remember, two years ago, the consumer and I fell on the black ice. Luckily, we were not hurt because we had our long thick winter coats, to cover our butts....) You are lucky to have her. :)
Same thing with my former consumers. I remember, I used to tactile with them for their medical appointments, as a tactile terp. I asked two consumers if they feel comfortable to get a certified medical terp. They said no, they preferred me because they trusted me. Also, I helped them to order the food from the menu. Some restaurants provide braille menu but not all restaurants don't. That makes me mad. I think all restaurants should provide deaf/hearing blinds the braille menu and so, they can order by themselves.
Thank you for wishing me the best. I will look forward to working with consumers again. :D

the slate sucks!!!!!!!

i am so jealous!!!!! my speed is like 30, but i started learning a year ago. ok, on topic, question... hmmm

are you going to NFB convention next year, i think you told me already but...

i HATE the slate. i remember how my braille teacher used to bribe me to use it by telling me i could write on the perkins *after* i wrote on the slate for 30 minutes. :mad2:

yes, i'm going to the convention next year. if you're going too, perhaps we could meet up. :)

yay!!! i sent you a pm, but i think i worded it wrong, the thing that really impresses me about you is that you are who you are, and you arent going to be shy about it. i think that rocks.

what is the cause of your blindness?

i know what you mean about establishing trust with someone who isn't a certified terp. someone who used to serve as my ssp was also a tactile terp for me at medical appointments. i always preferred using her because she knew what my needs were, my communication preference (tactile pse) and understood how to act around a dbp (deafblind person). no offense to certified terps, but some of them are too "formal" for my liking. i like terps who are laid back and who like to joke around a bit.

i also think all restaurants should provide a braille menu. i know mcdonald's does, but i'm not sure about others. to get around this, i check restaurant menus online so i know what to order.

what is the cause of your blindness?

thanks! :)

i believe in being straight with people. i don't like people who sugarcoat things or beat around the bush.

sometimes i can be direct to the point where i make others feel uncomfortable, but i always do my best to be tactful. sometimes i completely miss the mark, but i'm human! :) (if truth be told, sometimes my bipolar gets in the way of this. when i'm manic or depressed, i have a tendency to be more aggressive in what i say. i hope that doesn't sound like i'm using my bipolar as an excuse because it is a reality and symptom of the illness. when someone is manic, their sense of judgement completely goes out the window.)

my blindness was caused by retinopathy of prematurity (rop). after i was born, my rop progressed to stage 5 meaning that my retinas completely detached leaving me totally blind.

I'm not sure if you have been asked before, do you know any sign language?

oops! sorry i missed your question, cheri.

yes, i know sign. i know pse, see and asl (tactile). i started learning tactile sign at my local deafblind center in 1995 after i lost my hearing.

tactile sign (pse, see and asl) is no different than visual sign.

however, sometimes variations in signs need to be made for clarification's sake so that they can be recognized tactually.

for example, if two signs feel identical, one of them can be altered slightly so that it is more easily recognizeable.

thank you, jess.

byrdie, if you'd really like to know, it's no different than it would be for a hearie or deafie. the only difference is that i get an excuse to use the "braille method." :D

"Braille method?" What is that ? :)

Do tell! :giggle:

What does 5150 above your avatar mean?

it's police code for "crazy person" or "crazy person on the loose."

since i'm bipolar and schizoaffective, i use the term 5150 in a humorous way to describe myself. sometimes i like to joke about the fact that i'm bipolar and schizoaffective. if i don't, it's *really* hard to live with. i also find that when i can joke about my mental illnesses, others are more accepting of them because it helps put them at ease regarding something they know nothing (or very little) about.

oh, and if you're wondering what the word "beeper" means, it refers to a person who has bipolar.

Are you marry? do you have children?

no, i'm not married yet and don't have any children -- although i've been dating a wonderful sighted-hearing guy for the past 2 years. we plan to get married next year after i earn my bachelor's degree in social work. i'd like to have 2 children -- one through natural childbirth and the other through adoption (i'd like to adopt a deafblind, blind or deaf baby).

we are alike again. i just want a healthy happy baby *deafness, or blindness dosent count as health, unless there is something like cancer or something that could kill/cause pain* because deafness/blindness isnt a horrible thing. thats cool. do yall want a big or small house?

i'd love to live in a large house, but if my boyfriend and i can't afford one, that's okay too.

besides, due to my blindness, i feel more comfortable in smaller environments because it's easier for me to get around.

i don't know if i could adopt a baby with cancer. i saw my mother struggle with pancreatic cancer and it was one of the toughest things i ever saw. i can't stand the thought of babies and small children going through that. it's not fair. :(
