okay ad'ers. ask me anything (but be nice! :))

Oh no, that complicates things. I went through the police force. While my mother had an unusual last name, all the passport numbers in Russian changed in 1993, and lots of people changed their information during the switch. So I tried another avenue: I figured there's a good chance my parents had some shady history, and it turns out my mother has one mother of a police report.

If you know the city and hospital you were born at, maybe you could look into the hospital records? You could ask them to look at births on your birthday, or eve within the week of your birthday.

Did your adoptive parents keep your first name or did they change it? If they changed it, do you know what your first name was before they changed it?

checking with the hospital i was born at is the next step i plan to take since i already know my adoption records are "open."

my adoptive parents kept my first name.

That sounds like a good plan. If that doesn't work out, I would be careful about working through an agency. From personal experiences and stories I've heard, agencies are really good at taking your money and not doing much in the way of helping.

thanks for the word of caution regarding agencies. if i chose to go through an agency, i will make sure they have plenty of experience and solid references before proceeding with my investigation.

<smile> Which country were you adopted from? That also makes a huge difference. For example I was adopted from Russia, a country's whose work ethic can be summed up by "I don't care I just need the money."

i was adopted here in the u.s.

That is a plus in terms of finding an agency. I would give you a few names but the ones I tried all work with Russia.

thanks, nika. i appreciate that. perhaps my boyfriend or one of my sisters can help me find a reputable agency.

Thanks for answering my last set of questions. I've not been here recently since I've been really sick with flu. I still don't feel too well.

I'm wonderinging have you ever had experience of cab driver refusing to take you at all because of your dog? I've had that. I've also had people hire me cabs then for them simply not to show up at all.

that's another good idea, but i wonder if a pi would allow him to search for my parents given that he is not their child. do you think a pi would allow him to initiate the investigation without my participation?

oh yes of course. Look at online and you can see many sites that you pay to get information on others. a good, honest PI would judge the case and decide whether or not to participate. In this case - I think it's perfectly ethical and moral. Obviously - a good, honest PI would refuse to accept the request to gather info on someone if he senses some stalking going on.

You simply need to supply your BF with any information you have. the names of your adoptive parents, date of adoption, name of adoption agency, birth place, etc. Everything's on record (unless the record building was burnt down or flooded).

good luck! :cool2:

They allowed my adoptive parents and some Russian friends of mine to do the search for me, Hear Again, so I don't think you should have any problems with your boyfriend doing the search.

interesting!

the only thing that worries me is the challenge i may have in locating my parents. my father had a popular last name with a standard spelling (like smith) which could make finding him difficult at best. i also don't know the first or last name of my mother. all i know is the city and hospital i was born in.

ah... that's a good start. City + hospital + name of father + your name. Should have a record of it somewhere at hospital and/or town hall (assuming that's where your real parents resided). That's why it's good idea to hire a good PI. Expensive but a real quality work in short time.

i'm going to talk to my boyfriend and sister about finding a good pi. the last thing i want to do is waste good money, so i'm definitely going to make sure i do my research.

really? that's good to know. i feel better now and think i'll have my boyfriend handle the investigation.

however, i'm still going to write a letter to my mother so she can decide if she wants the option of communicating with me or not.
