oh, wow. yeah. there are just *so* many things sighted (and hearing!) people don't understand about the blind/vi (or d/hoh). i know exactly what you mean about being unable to identify birds until 9th grade. since i was born totally blind, i had to have early exposure to animals in a zoo so i could learn how to identify them. sometimes i had to start from scratch (and this is embarrassing for me to admit, but it's true), but my itinerant teacher had to explain what each animal was to me, let me feel it and then explain the different between its' front and back end. some people may think that's funny, but when you're a blind or vi child and can't see that for yourself, you have no idea about those kinds of things.
