Nc Deaf Man Shot While Trying To Asl

I don't know when failure to pull over became a crime worthy of the death penalty.

I can only think that the police officer perceived the guy as being "aggressive" for why they shot him which is totally nuts even with the adrenaline rush after a 6-7 mile chase...

@DeafDucky @newtothis

This whole situation worries me. Consider this hypothetical scenario: what if one of us Deaf folk in this forum was hit traumatically in the head by an assailant (in the car? or fled the assailant by car?) and was thus medically not capable of thinking properly while scrambling for help in a situation similar to the OP's post?

Does this mean the victim is more likely to be double victimized and shot?

He will have a tough time explaining how he felt his life was in danger and warranted the use of deadly force. The driver had several previous bad experiences with the police in the past and perhaps that is why he didn't pull over until he was home, unfortunately, the police officer made sure we will never know what his thoughts were.

That situation could happen to anyone though if a person is deaf then the stakes are a bit higher.

There was an incident earlier this year where a guy was shot in his car and if I remember was a bit panicked? His girlfriend video'd the whole thing- or part of it.

Uh, oh. One of the "experts" on Dr. Drew said that maybe we should rethink allowing deaf people to drive!
 ! I have a very good driving record , I have the best rating you can get .

I was thinking the guy may had been to afraid to stop and was trying to get home to have someone speak for him.

I went to same camp with him about 10 years ago. I couldn't believe what I see....but I am waiting for dash cam and body cam to show in the court and let the judge to decide if that sheriff did wrong to kill him. Sad!

what did his personality like? I don't understand why he kept driving 6 to 8 miles to get away from the cop cars then stopped right there. He got out of the car.. It causes cops to be pissed off, then shot him. Cop should not shoot him or shoot his leg. :(

when i first saw this news on my facebook feed from a friend -- my response was right after i read the first story is that he cops nudged him with the car. forget the part about not hearing the sirens.first- we all are deaf or hearing aid doesnt not always pick up sirens ok?.... second - his car was nudged by the cop. the cop normally would tap the left rear corner and try to do a light controlled spinout. if the driver - deaf or not was able to regain control after this move -- dont you think something is up with the driver ?? doesnt matter if they are scared or not. this is not a case of BUT I didnt KNOW you were after me and trying to get me to stop. blue lights, tap from car.. yes its time to pull over.

But what we need to see is the actual video AFTER the deaf driver got out of the car and how did he behave. is it the classic switch at birth when emmet was arrested? or was the deaf driver really was acting all ape like showing real aggression? was the driver under the influence of drugs /alcohol? dunno ... there too many burning questions in my head. this is why i carry the i am deaf card in the car i drive and leave in the dash board- i dont want ANY misunderstanding nor BS from police just because they dont realize i am deaf. I want to live. not die just because I'm trying to tell a cop i am deaf. cop training SHOULD include all this.

Last - I agree that there is NO reason to be shot at, the police has been trained too hard to ignore common sense/ignore wait a min whats wrong with this picture and shoot first ask questions later. I understand the training is to save the police officer lives, but i am pretty sure they could have interpreted what was going on and realize there was no need to shoot at the chest.

It said on this video people believe the deaf man was trying to sign language when the police shot him . :(

A police was directing traffic and said something to me then came storming over to my car and said " Are you deaf or something !" I told yeah
I am HOH ! The police said nothing and walked away. I hope that police thought twice before asking a person that again !

I can imagine something like this happened.

COP: (yelling) Put your hands up and get on the ground now!

DeafDude: (signing) I'm deaf! (points finger to hear) What did I do???

COP: (yelling) Stop and get on the f*ng ground now or we'll shoot!

DD: (signing) Calm down! I'm deaf! (approaches closer)

COP: (thinking to himself -- f*ck it) Stop!! (then goes trigger-happy) (gunshots)

It is part of police procedure, generally, to de-escalate situations, especially those times where it appears that someone is panicking and becomes increasingly so when the officer in this case continually bumped into the deaf man's car to let him know to stop. He was just trying to get to the safety of his home and gets shot the moment he gets out of his car........hmmmmm

I'm going to be watching this with great interest. Thanks for your helpful alerts, Reba.

I fear the reality is the audist/surdophobic mentality will make it the deaf or hoh man's fault.

Meanwhile, I'm not victim-blaming, but to stay alive, deaf driver's should stay aware of activity in all mirrors. In Oregon, the only requirement on my driver's license is the vehicle I operate must have "functional outside mirrors." I never drive without 'em. Always immediately pull over for emergency vehicles. Keep hands still and in view at 11 and 1 o'clock on the steering. Look at the officer. Calmly explain you're deaf and ask for reasonable accommodations. A few years ago when I was driving from Montana, I was pulled over for driving too slowly. I followed all the rules, and the CODA cop signed to me. Okay, that's really lucky but not unheard of. A deaf friend asked for help in following a traffic cop's directions, and a terp was sent for.

A calm reaction will get you more than an angry expressions and wild gesturing. Even if you can't hold a conversation, most of us can learn to say, "I am deaf and I need help."

It is very rare to see someone that don't support deaf people to drive, therefore, it is unlikely for legislators to take action because it could be in violation of ADA, so don't worry too much about it.

That's unfortunate situation and you should understand that not all police departments are trained to take care of situation with deaf people, that's problem, but you haven't push too hard to make change in police department.

I just watch the news and 6:30 news and there wasn't any update on this . I guess that b/c there been no riots or Deaf lives Matter protest.

Some people in the hearing community are woefully behind the times when it comes to knowing about the Deaf community. The panelist questioned how anyone without all their senses could drive a car. (That's a paraphrase of what she said.)

It does seem that too many confrontations end up escalating to deadly force rather than deescalating to resolution. :(

Not enough training? Not enough emphasis on deescalation and policy guidance from leadership? :dunno:
