Nc Deaf Man Shot While Trying To Asl

I think he made the bad choice by avoiding the cops for 6 to 8 miles. He could have stopped, and be cooperate so he would more likely be alive. ::confused:
Since he had previous experiences with the law you would think that he would know how to behave during a police confrontation.

Another problem with a car plate that identifies a Deaf driver is that at the time of police action, someone other than the Deaf person may be driving the car, or the Deaf driver might be driving another person's car. That is, the plate/tag, is not attached to the person, so it's not a guarantee of correct identification.

Uh, oh. One of the "experts" on Dr. Drew said that maybe we should rethink allowing deaf people to drive!
That is sooooo not okay. What's this person's "expertise"?

Good reasoning, Reba.

It's the same reason I don't want any signage on my car. I'm a US Army vet, a life member of NRA, am planning to vote, and am deaf. How sad would it be if my wife were a victim of road rage by a driver who's anti-military or anti-gun? Someone who hates either or both '16 candidates? How about a surdophobic (someone with an unreasonable fear of deaf people)?

Hey, don't laugh. The crazies are everywhere! Even if you or a loved one escapes road rage, a delusional nut could decide to slash your tires.

She's a criminal defense attorney:

"First of all, secondly, I think this is a huge systemic problem. I think that, number one, do we allow somebody whose deaf to drive? You have to be able to see and hear to be safe on the road, and, you know, how deaf do you need to be to be able to drive? Is there some criteria that the DMV and state could set -- set up?"

I would surely rather have an engaged deaf person driving than the multitudes of people who drive the car about 15% of the time.

I ride a motorcycle. We're fond of saying, "They're aiming at us!" You sit way taller on a bike than a car. I cannot tell you how many people have their phone against the steering wheel typing away.

One person came half way into my lane while texting. I asked her to roll down her window at the next light. I asked her if she thought she had a right to kill me! Obviously, she was not impressed.

Sorry for the little rant. It was only to re-enforce the fact that the deaf can drive just fine!!!

Some people in the hearing community are woefully behind the times when it comes to knowing about the Deaf community. The panelist questioned how anyone without all their senses could drive a car. (That's a paraphrase of what she said.)
I would love to had asked how "How could someone without a brain be a panelist ! "

Holy crap!!! For an attorney she's woefully ignorant of the freaking law.

Well, since she's a lawyer, perhaps she could look up and see what Judge Sherman Finesilver of Colorado had to say about that....

Yeah I don't put stickers on my car anymore for the candidate I will be voting anymore plus is no one business. I agree there are way too many crazies everywhere!

what did his personality like? I don't understand why he kept driving 6 to 8 miles to get away from the cop cars then stopped right there. He got out of the car.. It causes cops to be pissed off, then shot him. Cop should not shoot him or shoot his leg. :(
At camp, he was kind of immature boy who bug sprayed straight to my eyes, I had to run to infirmary to get that burn off my eyes and that was in 2002. I still couldn't believe what media say about him, and most article says he didn't pull over because he couldn't hear the siren, etc ... which is BS because at night every drivers are able to see the powerful strobes from police car, and even could feel when police bumped him.

I think he decided to drive to his family house and telling family "look I got a speeding ticket in front of house" and things went ugly.

I was targeted of road rage by crazy man with gun that pointed at me, also I had Longhorn stickers, but flipped the bird made worse. I escaped from this situation.

Alabamians hate Texas, anyway.

Also, if you live in eastern part of Oregon so it will be 98% chance that isn't happen to you, but I'm more of Portland since road rage is usually bad in bigger metro.

I believe that he did avoid the cops. That is too obvious. I don't want to think if he was trying to get away from them but he did.

he should, like he could have learned the lesson. BUT he didn't. he made the bad choice.

This British guy in US would have been already dead. But in Germany (one of the few countries in the world where order is strong) police are taught neither to punish you on site, nor to take revenge on you. He beats the police and the police after the incident ask him how he feels. In the US just forget that -here you might be shot just for yelling.

I'm wondering where you put Belgium on that list...

I think the trigger happiness of the police is also related to the amount of gun posession.

Here someone with speeding violations would be very unlikely to carry a gun, since it's really not common to have a gun here. In US that seems to be a lot more the case, so police are more afraid to run into an armed perpetrator. Which leads to more chance for bad judgement.

Nonetheless I don't believe police should ever shoot to kill...

. . .

American police aren't trained to "shoot to kill." They are trained to shoot to stop the threat. The most reliable way to stop a deadly threat is to shoot at the body mass, which sometimes results in death.

Of course, it's preferable to deescalate the situation and use better judgment when in a confrontation to avoid shooting at all.

Sorry if that came over wrong, I don't believe they do, but thats almost the message we get in media here. This story is also news here and gets to be slightly mispresented also. It's printed here as if the guy had no way of knowing he was supposed to stop...

Anyway I wouldnt want to be an officer, to have to make the call in a split second if the situation is life threatening...

I am not seeing any updates on the news , is anyone getting updates on this tragic story?

No because it is being investigated right now so of course no new information. Last info I saw here was the vigil lead by his brother.
