Nc Deaf Man Shot While Trying To Asl

There is never going to be an easy solution for this, maybe Law enforcement can just standard learn the words Deaf or Hohin sign language for those who use ASL. And for the ones raised orally, you can always tell them.

But there probably is a standard way how to react as deaf or hoh in these kind of situations.

I'm not sure the bumper sticker idea in the linked story would work. For one, how does the police officer know that it's true about the person he's interacting with? Two, what if it's an event where the deaf person isn't in his/her car? Three, it might not be a good idea for the whole world to know that the drive is unarmed and vulnerable.

When I took my hearing dog Finlay grocery shopping he wore his jacket that had 'Hearing Dog' printed on it in 3 places , I had people start to follow me back to my car .
Finlay would let me know by looking back then I looked back too. This happen a few times and I told Market Basket about this and I was told it was OK if my dog didn't wear his jacket anymore b/c they knew was hearing dog. I know just what you mean , I didn't like everyone know I was HOH it was too risky .

I find it upsetting that there been no updates on this story so I guess in not consider newsworthy . :(

You've checked on each and every police shooting? Or just the ones that made the news. Did it ever occur to you that the firings that included only one or two shots weren't newsworthy and that's why you didn't see them?

Of course there are some bad shootings that end in needless tragedy. That doesn't equate to "most" unless you have statistics. That equates to "newsworthy."

--20% is some bad shootings? That is how many people were shot and killed by the police in 2015, who were unarmed! When 1 in 5 involve an unarmed person we have a serious problem that is indeed a tragedy of epic proportions!

Yeah, I heard on news that he had a couple of other run ins with resisting charges filed that were dismissed. I didn't recognize his name from anyone in the meet up conversations, but I usually go up to Statesville.

No one's going to read about cops who deescalate situations or don't draw their guns. Only the shootings get on the news.

LOL no but knowing me I tend to lose stuff in the forum and forget where it's posted so PM was the better way. I might have seen the NC deaf events website ages ago- the last time I lived here around 2003-05.

Problem is many of the shootings would never of taken place regarding unarmed people if the police had just backed off, but that is not in many of their natures.

"Some" training will not work......
 
Someone had the idea of hiring deaf people in police departments all over the country in positions(not as police officers) where officers, staff, etc will see them everyday and get to know about deaf people no amount of training could ever accomplish.......sounds plausible to me....
 
More more evidences will come out and the media will change its story from innocent deaf man who can not hear the sirens to reckless driver or label him as "bad guy" anytime soon, just watch!

I hope not because it seems like the officer was as high on adrenaline as (from stories I have seen from Mr. Harris's classmates that he was sweet, harmless but a little "off")Mr. Harris was increasingly panicky during the incident and was seeking the safe harbor of his home. Excuses that he did not see the sirens, feel the police car's bumping him several times should not be proffered as Mr. Harris' side of the story by officials or the media but they might do it anyway.........it is drilled in police academies everywhere the importance of de-escalating situations. This particular police chase was not so egregious as to rise to killing someone over speeding. The officer waited no more than 5 seconds, from what I heard, to commence deadly fire.......
 
Sadly we'll never get to heard Mr. Harris's side of the story , I feel the police could had learn a lot if he wasn't so damn trigger happy !

If the process will be fair, we should see enough proof from the officer's body cam or car cam if either or both are available...I don't prescribe to the officer's being "trigger-happy" as much as he was unable to veer from that adrenaline going on......one would have thought he had 7 miles to calm down but .....what do I know?

Yeah that may had not been the best words to use , but this just so tragic and senseless to had happen. We'll never know why Mr. Harris didn't pull over and what he was thinking about the whole time , the officer's body cam isn't going tell this . I feel this just as importance or maybe more so .

Well, classmates of his have said he was a bit "off" but a nice person, otherwise. Maybe mild mental health problems but I don't want to speculate. I think he just panicked and wanted to get home. Its just that driving is a privilege rather than a right and screening for mental health issues isn't done anywhere that I know of...to obtain a driver's license, that is.....
