Mother seeks girl's hysterectomy

After reading several articles about the mother seeking legal approval of having her daugther Katie's womb removed...Unfortunately I'm having a second thoughts on this, since I do not know what it like to raise a child with cerebral palsy or had walked a miles in her mother's shoes, but I can see it wasn't an easy decision for her mother as she knows her daughter more than any of us do and obviously it seems to me that she is doing what she believes is best for her daughter and I should respect that...

I truly can understand this story has affect many people all over, who doesn't approved what the mother is doing, but it's not my place to say it is wrong and since Katie is incapable of doing anything for herself as she can not speak, so I believe that a parent can make decisions in the best interest for their own children...

I'm sorry ....

I can't blame or judge's kate mom for wanting to do what best for her child.

If she want the best for her child then send her to Nursing home or seek Expert for the help how to care of her in home... It's no excuse to remove part body to save her stress.

medical decisions for Kate to have a hysterectomy? It is not a emergency situation that she needs to have it, unless she has cancer of the uterus or ovaries. :ugh3:

Yes I agree with you on this.

I've read the article, and I do know how to read, I'm not as dumb as you think I am.

I am aware of her learning disabilities and mental development, that's not the point here It's about accepting the fact --this is who she is, and there is help out there that is available for her, where is it? instead of just leave her to be.

I'm a strong believer for second chance every human being has a second chance, and I believe she has a second chance to successful if she gets the proper help she needs in order to have a best possible quality of life.

Giving this girl a hysterectomy is like taking a-part of her life away.

I thought the same as you as well.

Cheri, LEARNING DISABILTY?!?!? Oh god.......Katies DOES NOT have a LD! She is PROFOUNDLY MR. Have you ever met someone with profound MR? Yeah she's not in a persistant vegegtative state, the way some kids with profound MR are. However, her needs are intense. Many kids with profound MR live in nursing homes as a matter of fact.
God, its hard enough for mild and moderate MR kids to deal with having a period.
Yes, there's a possibilty that Katie is actually more high functioning then it appears. But the thing is, most profound MR kids, are essentially BABIES. There is a HUGE difference between mild MR and profound MR, and you don't seem to be understanding that difference!

I would suggest you to rent the DVD "i am sam"... :ugh3:

I am speechless.

Fuzzy

I am total speechless about you, too. I am beginning feel that you agree with Nazi's view for did to poor and innocent disabled children.

Guess what, my friend who decided to put her teenage daughter to Nursing home said that mother decide to let Katie's part of organ to be remove remind her of Nazi time... I am beginning to agree with her after view the posts here. :ugh3:

I am sorry to say your positive links are good for nothing in Katie's case.

Katie's severly MENTALLY RETARDED - she has mental age of barely over
1 and 1/2 year old baby! and there is NOTHING that can change that.

The mother wants to save Katie's - Katie's, not herself! KATIE'S suffering - the mother wants to save Katie from any mental and physical discomfort that Katie would suffer every month having periods.

The Mom is changing Katie's diapers numerous times daily for the last 15 years so far, I am sure adding a change of sanitary napkins to this wouldn't matter a bit to Katie's mom.

It's not Katie's mom who would benefit from hysterectomy, it would be KATIE.

Comparing Katie disability to deaf pple is like comparing twisted ankle to the total paralysis.

And Katie's mom surely did not announced nor wanted to have her decision be announced to the media, somebody must have leaked this private information because of the nature of the situation.
Don't forget doctors does not just remove body parts on request - especially if they don't belong to the person requesting it - there have to be very valid reasons for it- yet Katie's drs stand behind her mom decision.

I respect your view but I respectfully disagree on this.

There're the best solution for the parents when they feel being burden to keep their severe disabled child is give child up for an adoption or search and search to find out how to help severe disabled child when they want to keep their child. If they do not feel want to being burden rest of their life when they want to keep child then sent child to Nursing home or whatever then they are able to visit their child there often and have them home for holidays like what my friend did.

I have seen many severe disabled children in Nursing home... They handle very well... they work at disabled warehouse... Bosch company, where my hubby work - they build warehouse for the disabled people to work - like pack the parcel, do with carpentar, etc. It's good moviation for them.

I remember the US movie about autism child and sex offender at 2 or 3 years ago... the parents thought they can take care of him... and tried their best to focus how help him... it goes worst... CPS advised them to send him to Nursing home... It make the parents mad... and finally agree to put him Nursing home... His behavior goes improve more and more... The parents are :jaw: He can answer lawyer's question about sex offender... wow...

I don't know if you thought the whole thing over very well, Liebling.
Putting such a severly disabled child for ADOPTION, or NURSING HOME?
Please!!, nobody will love Katie as much as her own mother, and Katie will certainly be more happy without womb but with her OWN parents in her own home who love her very much, than somewhere else adopted by god knows who, where she might be neglected or might be beaten up and sexually abused or in a nursing home where she can also be abused physically or sexually.

As for Katie's mom - she dedicated 15 years so far to Katie,
taking care of her for 24 HOURS a DAY, 7 DAYS, 365 DAYS PER YEAR wiping and washing Katie's butt after every pee, every bowel movement, bathing her, feeding her, dressing her, wiping her drools, taking her places, talking to her - not enough proof for you she's a good mother?

Fuzzy

That's alright Liebling, I don't expect everyone to agree with me here, so I respect yours likewise even through I don't agree with what you stated above but I do understand what you're trying to say here...

Same idea that happened in South Africa when their children's hands/arms were cut off for stealin' or whatever they do bad things with their hands. I think it happened in Rawanda ( name of the city ).

The question is : How could they do that to children ? How will the children be able to help their agin' parents without usin' hands ? How will the children be able to work without usin' hands ? There are many things I could tell it. They will experience hardship and struggle.

I was thinkin' about the mother who wants to remove her daughter's womb. I am concerned about this girl's health after removin' her womb, if the mother don't want her daughter to get pregnant or what ever that is that's really botherin' her ( mother ) - it could cause health some serious complications. Is she 15, right ? If, she is 15 - then, what if the mother tries to use a different option like takin' her daughter to a special trainin' for the CP/low function patients and see, if it successes ? She is only 15 years old and the mother should try somethin' else ( other options ) first before she can decide to remove her daughter's womb, if other options fail. If, she hasn't tries the other options yet and wants to remove the womb.. then, why is it always be the first option ( remove her womb ) ? :-\ I don't understand why some parents are lookin' for the " simple " choice as " fast " just like CI, remove womb, and such without tryin' other options first. I mean, I just don't understand. Why jump ? Is it a wise to jump like this ? Are they lookin' for " clean slate " ?

I know some of you will tell me that this girl's mental is too deep impaired or shall I say " low function " ? ... anyway, umm -- I would never think about tryin' to remove my child's womb, if I had a CP/low function child. I will always be there for my child, no matter what and, if there's somethin' that my child needs to improve her education or how to live her life on her own independent, then I would take her to one place where they will train/teach her. I will be there to learn how to train/teach my child as well.

I think it will benefit me as a mother to learn new things by participatin' in my child's life. :)

I don't know if you thought the whole thing over very well, Liebling.

Search and Search... :) like what I did with my ADD child... I searched and searched... how to help my ADD son when my son was a little boy. He was very hypericative boy.... I took them to therapies to develop their behavior... My ADD child become teenager now - show a very little of ADD and into respectful young adult... It would be worst when my child become teenager if I didn't search to help him enough.

Putting such a severly disabled child for ADOPTION, or NURSING HOME? Please!!,

Don't you know how to respect the parents's decision for give their child up for an adoption for different/good reasons or sent them to Nursing home for different/good reasons? Yes I respect their decision as long as they do not let anyone to remove part of their child's body.

nobody will love Katie as much as her own mother, and Katie will certainly be more happy without womb but with her OWN parents in her own home who love her very much, than somewhere else adopted by god knows who, where she might be neglected or might be beaten up and sexually abused or in a nursing home where she can also be abused physically or sexually.

Huh? it's paraniod talk...

The parents who decide to give their child up for an adoption or sent them to Nursing home doesn't mean that they don't love them. They have very good reason to make their decision.

Would you prefer that the parents are being force to be "good" parents to their child when they do not feel want to keep them? No, it would end to abuse them...

Yes I aware but I feel that the mother need to seek Expert's help how to help Katie's development.

If mother want to keep her then is her decision. I respect her decision for want to keep her but it's no excuse to remove her part body to save her stress which she did already for 15 years. I cannot say anything further about her because I don't know what and how she did to Katie... If I am Katie's mother then I would seek the help.

I just remember a deaf mother who lives in Munich, have mental and deaf child due lack of oxgen at birth.

She thought for want to keep him but she & her ex-hubby can't handle it anymore so they decided to put him Nursing home for the deaf in Zell when he was 3 years old. They visited to see him time to time and have him for holidays. He can look after himself and live with his mother when he was 18 years old and decided to want to have his own apartment to get away from his mother so the parents searched ... and found a apartment that he is happy... and move out when he was 21 years old and have friends... He know how to go work his own by train, bus and metro... Now he is 27 years old and have his own appartment for the disablity home and go work at warehouse.. He can take care of himself and can go to restroom himself and can clean himself well. Without Nursing home, he would never know how to take care of himself because mother do everything for him and won't let him stand his own feet... I met him & his mother several times at festivals. Mother admitted that she don't know that severe disabled children CAN stand their own feet which she thought they need parent's help and then THANK Nursing home for taught her son like that.

You think the mom is so stupid she didn't thought yet of searching and talking to professionals who take care of Katie's for last 15 years?

Oh yeah- she does have an valid excuse- mental and physical anguish Katie would have to go thru every month she gets her period, not to mention confusing PMSes and other hormonally caused discomforts.

Katie's'15, from the article I understand she didn't get her periods yet and the mother wants to prevent it from happening at all because it will be too scary and emotionally disturbing for Katie's 1/ 1/2 years old mind.

We did the same to my hubby's 90 years old great Aunt but we did not removed her part of organ to save our stress. :) (of course she still have period).

Katie will NEVER be better.
no amount of therapies, medical treatments and nursing homes will make her better - she will be in diapers and non-communicative for the rest of her life.

Who says that the mom is so stupid? Don't make a false statement/acussation.

Again, Again, the problem is the some parents have lack of their exposure, education and awareness how to develop their children in positive way. It's an exact same what my parents did to me. I don't blame my parents because I understand that they don't know enough how to help me. Some parents determined in firm way how to help their child... like what I stated in my previous post about true movie over German furniture owner and his severe disabled daughter after motor bike accident.
