Pop star's family wants answers, Jesse Jackson says
Pop star's family wants answers, Jesse Jackson says - CNN.com

Michael Jackson's family suspects that the singer's personal doctor, Conrad Murray, knows more about Jackson's death, but they have been unable to contact him, the Rev. Jesse Jackson told CNN on Saturday.

The parents need to know what happened in the last hours of their son's life, according to Jesse Jackson, a civil rights activist and Baptist minister unrelated to Michael Jackson.

Murray is believed to be the last person to see Michael Jackson alive.

"The routine inquiry is now an investigation," Jesse Jackson said. "They [the Jacksons] didn't know the doctor. ... He should have met with the family, given them comfort on the last hours of their son."

Police, who met briefly with Murray after the singer's death, have been able to reach him and are trying to set up an interview, Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Charlie Beck told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. Police said the doctor has been fully cooperative.

Murray's lawyer plans to meet with police Saturday afternoon, according to an associate of the attorney, Ed Chernoff.

Detectives impounded Murray's car, which was parked at the singer's rented home, because it may contain evidence related to Michael Jackson's death.

Police have released no information on what they may have found.

Michael Jackson died Thursday, and an autopsy was performed the following day. The body was taken to an undisclosed mortuary Friday night.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office told reporters Friday that more tests must be conducted before a cause of death can be determined. That could take four to six weeks.

Jesse Jackson visited the family compound in Encino, California, on Friday.

"I talked with Mrs. Jackson and with the father, Joe, and she could not fight back the tears. She said, 'My baby is gone. Michael was such a good son. I loved him so much. I miss my baby.'"

The family wants to hear Murray's account of what happened, but they can't locate him, Jesse Jackson said.

"The doctor's bizarre behavior here is creating all these suspicions," he said. There are lingering questions, such as: 'How long had he stopped breathing? How long had he been unconscious?'"

He said the family may decide to pursue its own inquiry.

"At this point it [the investigation] is very incomplete," he said. "... They need an independent autopsy to get even more answers to questions that are now being driven by the gap between when Michael was last seen alive and [when] he was pronounced dead day before yesterday."

The possibility that Michael Jackson was taking medication that could have contributed to his death at age 50 weighs heavily on people close to the star.

In 2005, after he was cleared on charges of child molestation, Jackson spent a week at a center run by Dr. Deepak Chopra, a physician who focuses on spirituality and the mind-body connection.

During that week, the pop star asked Chopra for a prescription for a narcotic, the doctor told CNN.

"I said, 'What the heck do you want a narcotic prescription for?'" Chopra said. "And it suddenly dawned on me that he was probably taking these and that he had probably a number of doctors who were giving him these prescriptions, so I confronted him with that. At first, he denied it. Then, he said he was in a lot of pain."

Chopra said he told Jackson that there were plenty of other ways to handle his pain, but that Jackson was not convinced.

He blamed Jackson's death on drug abuse, though he offered no direct evidence.

"When you have enough drugs in your system, your heart goes into an arrhythmia and your respiration stops," he said. "I think the drugs killed him."

Brian Oxman, a former lawyer for the Jackson family who was in the emergency room Thursday, also expressed concern about medications the pop star was taking.

"I talked to this family about it, I warned them -- I said that Michael is overmedicating and that I did not want to see this kind of a case develop," Oxman told CNN's "American Morning" on Friday.

He referred to Anna Nicole Smith, the former model and reality television star who died of an overdose in 2007.

"I said, 'If that's what's going to happen to Michael, it's all going to break our hearts.' And my worst fears are here," he said.

Oxman emphasized that he did not know what killed Jackson, and was not making accusations against anyone.

Jackson was in cardiac arrest when paramedics took him Thursday from his home to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where the music idol was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. (5:26 p.m. ET).

In a 911 call released Friday, an unidentified caller told a dispatcher to send help. He told the dispatcher that Jackson was not breathing and Jackson's doctor was performing CPR on a bed.

Jackson had been preparing for a comeback tour -- aimed at extending his legendary career and helping him to pay off hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

Jackson is survived by his three children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.

But you overlook the possibility of someone who claims to be an abuse victim and then passionately defends an accused pedophile could have unresolved issues of wanting to see their abuser as not having really been bad.

Michael Jackson had history of health problems
Michael Jackson had history of health problems - CNN.com

Pop icon Michael Jackson, 50, who died Thursday afternoon after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital in cardiac arrest, had a long history of confirmed health problems, in addition to rumored conditions.

In 1984, Jackson was burned while singing for a Pepsi-Cola commercial in Los Angeles, when a special-effects smoke bomb misfired. He had to have major surgery on his scalp and said that because of the intense pain, he developed an addiction to painkillers.

He also was reported to have a form of lupus in the 1980s, but it was later said to have gone into remission.

Jackson also had had numerous plastic surgeries, including rhinoplasty and a chin implant.

In 1993, Jackson's dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, released a statement saying that Jackson had a skin disease called vitiligo. The condition causes a person to lose melanin, the pigment that determines the color of skin, hair and eyes, in patches or all over the body. Vitiligo affects 1 million to 2 million people in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health, and no one knows what causes it. Learn about the difference between heart attack and stroke

He was also hospitalized with chest pains in 1990 and postponed a concert because of dehydration in August 1993. A concert tour was cut short in November 1993 because of an addiction to prescription painkillers amid allegations of child molestation.

During a rehearsal at the Beacon Theater in New York in December 1995, the entertainer collapsed onstage from apparent dehydration and low blood pressure and was hospitalized.

While jurors deliberated in a case in which he was accused of child molestation in June 2005, Jackson went to a hospital for treatment of what his spokeswoman said was recurring back pain. He had complained of back problems before.

Rumors circulated in December that Jackson was ill and in need of a lung transplant because of Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic condition.

More rumors emerged in May that Jackson had skin cancer. But Randy Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live, told CNN at the time, "He's as healthy as he can be -- no health problems whatsoever."

Jackson apparently collapsed in his home in Los Angeles on Thursday and was taken by ambulance to UCLA Medical Center.

Jackson family attorney Brian Oxman told CNN on Thursday that Jackson's use of medications had gotten in the way of doing rehearsals.

"His injuries, which he had sustained performing, where he had broken a vertebra and he had broken his leg from a fall on the stage, were getting in the way. I do not know the extent of the medications that he was taking," he said.

Cardiac arrest, distinct from heart attack, affects about 300,000 Americans every year, Dr. Clyde Yancy of the American Heart Association told CNN. Without immediate efforts to resuscitate a person, the survival rate is usually 5 percent to 15 percent, he said.

If resuscitation takes longer than three to five minutes, a person could experience profound impairments, particularly neurologically, he said. Beyond five minutes, the likelihood of success falls quickly, especially in older people. Younger people can tolerate cardiac arrest somewhat better, he said.

I personally believe that he was an asexual.

Many children slept in his bed, confirmed that they was NEVER touched inappropriately by Michael.

Guess being famous, takes a toll on people.

Being famous was not the only thing that took a toll on MJ! He was abuse by his dad as child and MJ was picked on by his brothers too! It made me sick to see MJ dad act sad about his son death! The SOB should be in jail for beating up his son! I know what it like to abuse as a child , it never leave you!

Janet Jackson arrives at Michael Jackson's LA home
Janet Jackson arrives at Michael Jackson's LA home - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES – Janet Jackson arrived at her brother Michael Jackson's Holmby Hills estate Saturday, where moving vans arrived earlier in the day.

Janet Jackson, wearing dark glasses, drove up in a Bentley and went directly to the estate. About eight movers had taken dollies and packing equipment through the gates. It wasn't immediately known what was being taken out.

Most of Michael Jackson's family members had gathered in their Encino compound, where they are contemplating funeral arrangements and caring for his three children. They are feeling confused, upset and angry by the lack of information about those who were around the pop superstar in his final days, a person close to the family told The Associated Press.

Jackson's family wants to know more specifics about what role AEG, the concert promoter that was staging his 50-date concert series at London's 02 Arena, was playing in his life, said the person, who requested anonymity because of the delicate nature of the situation. They also want to know more about the role of his advisers and representatives, who they believe were put in place by the promoter.

AEG spokeswoman Natalie Whorms in London had no comment Saturday.

Jackson never communicated to his family who he had in place to handle his business affairs, the person said, adding that they were told by the singer's phalanx of advisers that he likely had a will, but it may be many years old. The family is distrustful of what they are being told — but they are determined to find out more, the person said.

"There are decisions going down without the family being in the loop; it's becoming an issue," the person said.

Randy Phillips, AEG Live president and chief executive, said earlier Friday that it was Jackson who insisted that Dr. Conrad Murray, a financially troubled cardiologist who was with the entertainer when he collapsed Thursday, be put on the tour payroll.

"As a company, we would have preferred not having a physician on staff full-time because it would have been cheaper without the hotels and travel, but Michael was insistent that he be hired," Phillips said. "Michael said he had a rapport with him."

Jackson collapsed Thursday at his rented home in Los Angeles. Police seized Murray's car in search of evidence, but have insisted that the doctor has been cooperative and do not consider him a criminal suspect.

Records reveal years of financial troubles for Murray, who practices medicine in California, Nevada and Texas; his Nevada medical practice, Global Cardiovascular Associates, was slapped with more than $400,000 in court judgments, and he faces at least two other pending cases and several tax liens.

The person close to the family said that while there were reports that the singer was distant from his family, Jackson spoke with his mother, Katherine, quite regularly and his father, Joe, had seen his son shortly before his death. His other eight siblings, including fellow superstar Janet, may not have talked to him recently but were not estranged.

Much of the family was holed up Friday inside the Jackson family's Encino compound, including his three children, according to the person, who described them as doing "pretty good."

"I don't think it's fully set in yet," the person said.

In a statement, Lionel Richie said Jackson was "a world phenomenon. He was very misunderstood, but yet tried to desperately to be a part of this world. We all watched him as he struggled with that balance."

Bette Midler described Jackson as "a showman without equal."

"I personally intend to only remember the best of him, his kindness, his charm, his superb musicianship, his magical dancing and his beautiful voice," she said in a statement.

The pop star left behind three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, 12; Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, 11; and Prince Michael II, 7. The elder children were born to ex-wife Deborah Rowe, while the youngest is his biological son, born to a surrogate mother.

Rowe and Jackson married in 1996 and divorced in 1999.

No family members were present in the mansion when Jackson died Thursday, the person close to the family said. In the 911 call released by fire officials Friday, an unidentified caller tells a dispatcher that Jackson's doctor is performing CPR.

Asked by the dispatcher whether anyone saw what happened, the caller answers: "No, just the doctor, sir. The doctor has been the only one there."

Coroner's officials said they released Jackson's body to his family late Friday night. The family is still trying to determine what kind of memorial to have for Jackson and when, and are debating between the idea of having a private ceremony or a grand celebration open to the public, the person close to the family said.

Jackson appeared to have suffered a heart attack, another person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity told the AP on Friday. A heart attack is a blocking of the arteries that deprives the heart of adequate blood and can cause cardiac arrest.

Jackson's brother Jermaine said Thursday that it was believed the pop singer went into cardiac arrest, an interruption of the normal heartbeat that can be caused by factors other than heart attack.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office, which completed its autopsy Friday, said there were no signs of foul play or trauma, but determining the cause of death will require further tests that will take six to eight weeks.

Phillips said AEG Live held multiple insurance policies covering cancellation of the shows, and that some time in February Jackson submitted to several hours of physicals that the insurance underwriter insisted upon, and that Jackson passed them all.

"We had pretty good coverage, but a lot of it is going to depend on the toxicology results," he said. "We need to know what the cause of death was."

Jesse Jackson: Family wants 2nd autopsy
Jesse Jackson: Family wants 2nd autopsy - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson's family wants an independent autopsy to determine the cause of the King of Pop's death, The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday.

The family told Jesse Jackson about its wishes while he spent time with them during the past two days, the reverend said in an interview with The Associated Press.

He said there were unanswered questions surrounding the death, including the role of the personal cardiologist who was with Michael Jackson when he died.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office performed an autopsy on the singer's body on Friday but deferred a finding on the cause of death pending further tests that could take more than a month.

Coroner's officials said they released Michael Jackson's body to his family late Friday night. Jesse Jackson did not say if an independent autopsy had been arranged.

Spiritual teacher and medical doctor Deepak Chopra said earlier Saturday he had been concerned since 2005 that Michael Jackson was abusing prescription painkillers and most recently spoke to the pop star about suspected drug use six months ago.

Chopra said Jackson, a longtime friend, asked him for painkillers in 2005 when the pop star was staying with him following his trial on sex abuse allegations.

Chopra said he refused but added the nanny of Jackson's children repeatedly contacted him with concerns about Jackson's drug use over the next four years.

Janet Jackson arrived at her brother's Holmby Hills estate Saturday, where moving vans pulled up earlier in the day and about eight movers took dollies and packing equipment through the gates.

The vans left after being inside the estate for almost an hour, and it wasn't immediately known what had been taken out.

Houston lawyer William M. Stradley said his firm had been hired by Murray.

Jackson collapsed Thursday at his rented home in Los Angeles. Police seized Murray's car in search of evidence but have insisted that the doctor has been cooperative and do not consider him a criminal suspect.

Jackson also left legacy as cultural phenomenon
Jackson also left legacy as cultural phenomenon - Yahoo! News

ATLANTA – From the wow to the weird, Michael Jackson leaves a fashion legacy to rival his musical one.

His black fedora, silver glove and red leather jacket were worn by millions around the world who channeled Jackson's spirit and sartorial flair. Later, he made fashion choices that weren't as popular, but were no less memorable: the pajama pants during his child molestation trial, the black robes and veils while living in Bahrain, the germ masks that were a regular accessory.

All combined to cement Jackson's legacy as a pop and fashion icon.

"There are a few people who are the innovators, who set the trends that other people follow," said Stephane Dunn, a frequent writer of popular culture who teaches English at Morehouse College. "Here was Michael, who understood the power of style and was able to translate it in a way that everybody wanted to copy it."

His costumes weren't just for the stage. At a White House appearance, Jackson stood alongside first lady Nancy Reagan, looking the part of a glamorous general in a sequined military-style coat, aviator sunglasses and single, studded glove.

Few could imitate Jackson's talent, but for decades, millions around the world stole his style, and not just on Halloween. Jackson was constantly mimicked among the miniature and the mature, in classrooms, at costume parties, or at his concerts.

"He basically was the cool of the moment," Dunn said. "He was creating this whole persona, and people ate it up. By themselves, these things probably would've been corny."

But on Jackson, they were instant vintage. Growing up, 25-year-old Cinco Montoya cherished his "Thriller" jacket and black loafers that were Jackson's trademark.

"I tried to do my hair like him," Montoya said, recalling how he used to wet his black tresses, trying to coif his curls like those of his hero's. "I watched all of his videos. I used to think he was like Superman."

Jackson's ability as a performer electrified audiences, inspired amateurs of all ages and launched the careers of entertainers from Chris Brown to Chris Tucker, said Mark Anthony Neal, who teaches black popular culture at Duke University.

"His success was a template for them," Neal said of performers like Brown, Ginuwine and Justin Timberlake. "Usher doesn't have a move that he didn't initially think about because he saw Michael Jackson do it."

Usher and Jackson once shared the stage for a performance of "You Rock My World," and Brown did a "Thriller" tribute performance at the World Music Awards in 2006.

Neal described Jackson's music as "black pop," and credits the megastar with bringing the sound into the mainstream, which was later invoked by Madonna, 'N Sync, the Backstreet Boys and others.

But it was perhaps his unique fashions that connected him most to his fans — and Jackson never even had his own clothing line.

"By wearing the clothing, he became accessible to people, especially as his celebrity got to a point where he became inaccessible," Neal said.

Jackson will be remembered as a style pioneer, said Keith Brown, a stylist based in Atlanta.

"He was and is still, to this day, an original," Brown said. "You knew he had it. As he grew older, he proved to not be afraid to show his uniqueness, not only through his music, but through his evolution. He was ... a barrier breaker."

what are you getting at here?

Something you overlooked.

It´s exact my point. I as a parent would prefer to see justice over money.

I personally believe that he was an asexual.

Many children slept in his bed, confirmed that they was NEVER touched inappropriately by Michael.

Exactly

Yeah

It could be his CURIOUSLY because he never see adult´s nude in his life.

My hubby & I are nude front of our teenage children as the same as they are nude front of us as well without touch each other. Are we pedophile or molester?

Yes, Michael do not denied that he was nude front of children when he came out from the shower and allowed the children slept in his bed. The children confirmed that Michael never touch them.

Ýes I am well aware that accord U.S. law that it´s sexual abuse if the children look at adult´s nude bodies. It´s sad because Michael should have known better what he did is crime to U.S. law.

I see the problem is some people confused nudity with porn - sex abuse, etc.

Yes, out of natural curiousity.

Very insightful.

'It could be his CURIOUSLY because he never see adult´s nude in his life.

My hubby & I are nude front of our teenage children as the same as they are nude front of us as well without touch each other. Are we pedophile or molester?'

I am really curious how you would had felt if your parents did the same with you! I think you are sick ! Yes I think you're pedophile! I hope you do not walk around nude when your kids's come over, and I bet if the parents knew about your famliy get together they would not want their kids at your home! I know I would not want any of my kids at your house!

I have been trying like crazy to walk a line of neutrality regarding the molestation charges, but I'm tired of doing so. I'm going simply state this. It's my belief that he was guilty, but no court convicted him of any wrong doing and that is something we all have to live with. I will not vilify him, but I won't defend him, either. Even IF he was innocent of the charges, he perpetrated the innuendo by the statements he made regarding the permissable sleeping with young children. That right there screams that he had a very warped perception and no one should condone or justify that. These were NOT his own children he was said to have had in his bed, but other parent's kids. That just screams pathology in my mind. Pedophilia? Who knows, but it's still just not something I would want to subject MY child to!
