Lies about CI's

The implant company told me that it may make a weird sound, but it was safe and would not damge the device.

I didn't say it damage it. I'm talking about erasing your mapping program.

doing something simple as laundry or play in the playground can do this. I had my mapping erased several times because I don't use fabric softener due to eczema.

Is it true that metal detector wipe out mapping? I read something about that today. I have to admit it, when I walked in a metal detector in FL airport, it did give off static sounds.

I got the implant in Dec 2008, flown at least 10 times since then, and nothing has happened....

Oh and I've flown in different cities....

There is an explanation for the static sound:
“What will happen to my speech processor when I walk through airport security metal detectors?
Usually, nothing will happen. If your processor is set on the telecoil “T” setting, you may hear some buzzing as you walk through. This is harmless electromagnetic interference. It’s smart to leave your processor turned on when you walk through, just in case the security guard needs to speak to you.”

Does that help?

Me thinks that someone heard this buzzing, freaked out, and then spread the rumor that it will wipe out mapping.

Seriously? I've never had my mapping erased. Huh. And I'm always shocking myself. Damn winter. Oh well. I always keep the other CI handy.

Right, and they warn against plastic slides and static. There is no static in a metal detector.

you're lucky. We don't have a humidifier built in that some heat pump come with. we have to get an individual humidifier.

actually we have a gas furnace heat but we can use the heat pump if we wanted to.

oh yeah, mapping being erased is common problem, even this boy thinks so: Teen with cochlear implant helps Madison Academy team pick research topic for Lego Robotics League competition | al.com

He have a skit on walking in metal detectors. I know it is just a skit, but It make me wonder if it was based on his real experience. Static electricity is everywhere, but I was just wondering if it is stronger around metal detectors.

here are my rules to prevent mapping from being erased:

Used fabric softener (we can't do this though)
get a humidifier if your heat pump don't have one.
buy cotton clothes, no polyesters <---- dry air, no fabric softener, and polyester mixed is ASKING for static electricity. But most clothes are made of polyester..

when you take out the laundry, touch something metal or something (but I always forget to do this, so I stick with cotton clothing and humidifier)

Ugh, we haven't had a mapping erased due to static yet in the past 3+ years, and I've let Li use the trampoline, plastic slides, and all that jazz with processors on, her hair on end. (Knocking wood, because I've read that it can happen pretty easily).

But I do often ask her, when we go past security in stores, if she hears anything unusual. She's not the most accurate reporter yet, so I'm not sure if she's just accustomed to weird sounds and takes it for granted.

We fly a few times a year together, and typically I send her through the special line for pat down, rather than the scanner, just because I want to avoid extra rays whenever possible :) , so haven't had the scanner delete a map yet, didn't realize that was a possibility.

He said that his child has access to all sounds in speech, I said that means he is not a candidate for a CI. He can't have it both ways. Either he is a CI candidate and does not have spoken language access through hearing aids, or his hearing aids provide access and he is not.
Something else for you to chew on:

I never said that my son definitely had full access to speech sounds. I've left that point deliberately vague, because the fact is, whether he does or not never figured into my decision regarding cochlear implants.

There is plenty of misinformation regarding the deaf being spread, and you yourself are contributing to it. Shame that you can't see it. Advocates that don't even understand what they need to advocating for are worse than useless. They are dangerous. And that ain't no lie!
It's a form of oppression that's particularly insidious because the oppressor pictures himself as the benefactor and never realizes that he's doing more harm than good.

Some see denying access to sound which can provide access to spoken language and such as a form of oppresion as well.

FJ is a good example on using the opportunity to use ASL and CI.

I very politely answered your questions about why I implanted my daughter, and Grendel is always respectful. Why would you agree that we are nothing but argumentative and add us to ignore?

I'm not ignoring anyone, I have no one on my ignore list. But I do agree with the post that things were turning unnecessarily fierce. I asked you politely with genuine questions. You answered accordingly and I appreciate that. It shows people can be civil when they choose to be.

Dang, what a blurry line it is now!

WOW!! go away for a few days and a lot changes.

Parents who are raising their kids with both ASL and cochlear implants are now oralists!!!

BTW, my daughter has flown on planes all her life and has never has a problem with metal detectors nor has she ever lost a program due to static electricity.
