"Letting the Child Decide"

Looks like Flip owes Cloggy $500!
Rick

If they were talking about sound localization, yes but they werent so I guess not. :)

That's the whole point: the medicalized view, or the linguistic/cultural view. Those who take the linguistic/cultural view truly resent being told they are defective.

I used to have that medicalized view cuz I wanted so badly to hear but once I changed to the linguistic/cultural view, I have never been more content in my life. I dont see my deafness as annoying as I used to and guess what? It made interacting with hearing people so much easier even though I still get high anxiety level in large groups but I know that it is ok nor not my fault if I dont understand everything. Sure I have my frustrating moments but that feeling of hating myself or blaming myself is gone completely. :) Whew! That wasnt fun to live with.

Uh Uh..good try Cloggy. Patrionizing me wont work.

Yes, I read Jag's post and understood clearly what she was referring to when using the word "irrevelant"...your point is?

Now, let me help u...my reference to this word was in reference to YOUR post about deafness being irrevelant with CIs nowadays. Nothing to do with Jag's comment. Gasp!!! Yes, I can read. :)

U can do the patriotnizing on others but with me..nope, aint happenin' baby. :giggle:

Pls show me sources proving that CI children who are happy not needing sign language or the need to meet other deaf people are the norm. That would be helpful since u are set on educating me.

You go girl!

well I find mine annoying too......I guess it all gets back to whether you look upon deafness as a physical/medical disability to be corrected in any way possible.........or of you take the view that DEAFNESS is some huge wonderful identity making thing to be clung to at any cost.

Having said that I just cant believe the juvenile playground sniping thats going on in this thread, everyone is getting so confused you just dont know or cant remember what was said.

We are all deaf or HOH on here, apart from parents etc, if some cant play nicely then they should be sent home

That's your business that u find your deafness annoying and I wont hold it against u. My view may be different from your cuz I dont find mine annoying and it is such a relief to be freed from that. That's why I dont see the need for a CI for me.

Who on this forum has ever said that deaf people were defective? And cite examples. I have a deaf child and the last thing I believe is that she is defective!

Sure its easier. You took control of your own life, and now you interact with the hearing on your terms. Its very empowering.

I said that...guilty as charged. *gasp*!!! How can that be??

BTW..I am just joking. Trying to lighten up the mood here.

That's the medicalized viewpoint, dude. If it wasn't defective, they wouldn't keep trying to fix it!

Thanks...I am so thankful for learning ASL and getting involved with the deaf community. Now, I have a good balance of both worlds and get my needs met.

What you said just hit my Good spot! Thats the words I was trying to look for! I ll remember that. Way to go!

well for once I have to agree with Jillio.........I see myself defective in one small way.........but oh so superiour in others:ty:

if I could fix it I sure would.........however as I have said before to each their own, so why does everyone on here keep bashing those with the other view point????????

no one has yet answered my question, maybe on another thread ,as to why it is ok to fix eyesight, amputated limbs or anything else you can think about but NOT deafness?????

Because it is the medical vs. cultural model that's why

That is a stretch then to say that deaf people themselves are viewed as defective. It is also a very simplistic definition of a viewpoint. It is not how we view our daughter's deafness and we know even though she has a ci, she was, is and always will be deaf. There was nothing to "fix" but there were opportunities and benefits to be given.

Sorry, but you cannot fit all of us square pegs into your round holes! Always come back to the same thing with you: open your mind and be tolerant of those who have chosen a different path for their children then you have. There is no one right way to raise any child!

I agree...I honestly dont know how all of us got to the point of bashing each other. Oh well..

I will start off..I am sorry for being a bad girl. :giggle:

Really, if your daughter is very happy and everything, then I am happy. I just wish that all deaf children could be as fortunate. Oh well
