is wine good for you???

I was baptized Catholic but I know almost NOTHING about it. LOL! I remember sipping something at my friend's Catholic church as a kid. I will have to ask her about it. It was her communion.

Question: At someone's first communion, does everyone drink the wine/grape or just the person themselves?

I am very ignorant about this subject.

First Communion is taken with the other members of the Catechism class, All the members of the class take their First Communion together, and they all drink from a communal vessel.

I just paged my best friend asking her about that day when I drank something for her communion and asked her if everyone drank wine or grape juice at her Catholic church. Waiting for her reply...

Without a doubt I certainly can see that this debate has been blown way out of proportion. If you re-read Cheri's first original post where she stated "I went to my niece first communion, and the cup she was drinking out of was grape juice not wine....." She did not say all Catholic Church uses grape juice to serve the holy communion so where did she say she had knowledge about the practices of the Catholic church?

She was correct about our hearing sister, they are Catholic, both of her daughters were baptized when they were babies, then later attend classes at the church, now her oldest daughter who is 8 had her first holy communion on May 11th, we all attend and Cheri did asked and we were told it wasn't wine but grape juice.

Therefore it's proves to me that not all Catholic church serves wine during the holy communion.

As the old saying goes "When you are wrong be quick to apologize, when you are right be quick to forgive".

Who told you it was grape juice? And, my dear, I am not wrong regarding the practices of the Catholic Church. Likewise, when protestants refer to "their church" they mean the one building where they attend church. When Catholics refer to "our church" or "the church" we refer to the Church as an institution. "our Church" does not necessarily refer to the building where we attend, that would be "our parrish".

Huh? You need to address this to Jillio, not me, geeez!
She is the one who answered her post first not me.
So be careful who you direct your anger to ...

Cool.

She probably wouldnt remember herself. The reason I got curious cuz I want to know if that was actual wine I drank or not.

However, I just realized that u said the members of the class drink from the vessel so it couldnt be that cuz I never took a class so I could be wrong. Maybe I drank something and thought it was related to the church. See what happens to deaf kids who dont have access to what is being said around them...we get confused!

Maybe my friend was just as confused as I was and thought it was her first communion. Who knows!

However, I like wine!

Please do not assume that I am, I quote your post 'cause of your response to Cheri. Let's not jump to conclusions, that's how a majority of posts in the threads get carried away.

Peace to you.

Communion under one kind is the reception of the Sacrament of the Eucharist under the species or appearance of bread alone, or of wine alone, Communion under two or both kinds, the distinct reception under the two or both species, sub utraque specie, at the same time. In the present article we shall treat the subject under the following heads:

in the Communion of children which was usually given, even in the churches, under the species of wine alone, but sometimes under the species of bread alone; (4) in the Communion under the species of bread alone at the Mass of the Presanctified, and as an optional practice, in some churches on ordinary occasions. To these examples may be added (5) the practice of the intinctio panis, i.e. the dipping of the consecrated bread in the Precious Blood and its administration per modum cibi.

Yeah, me, too. Unless there was a specific ceremony attached, where your friend was dressed in white dress and veil, and the boys in suits, then it wasn't her First Communion. First Communion is a big celebration in the Catholic Church.

Also, when Catholics take communion, they don't doit from their seats in the pews, they all approach the altar, and are delivered of the sacramental wine and unleavened bread directly by the priest, or in some occasions, by a deacon. The priest blesses the wine and the bread, and he receives communion first, and then the congregation receives communion.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Communion Under Both Kinds

Maybe some churches or parishoniers substitue the wine with grape due to the alcohol factor? I am wonder maybe there are some churches that do that so they wont be held responsible for intoxicating children with alcohol so at their own will, subsitute wine for grape?

The reason I ask cuz I used to be a resident counselor for a group home under a Jewish organization so we had to follow the orthodox principles. Every Friday evening, the clients had to do...oh gosh, what is it called relating to prayer or.... ? With the bread and "wine" but instead of real wine (due to the medicines the residents were on ) we had to use grape juice.

That was what happened...they approached the altar and drank the "wine" from the vessel and had the bread immediately after that. I was included in the process but I never went to any of the classes. My friend just happened to invite me and I went just that one time. After that, I didnt like what was going on cuz I was very very confused (of course...no access to communication) and all freaked out so I told my mom that I never wanted to go again.

:dunno: what went on...

Who told you it was grape juice?

My hearing sister, her daughter is the one who had her first communion my dear, she wore a beautiful white grown with a veil on her head.

When I saw her, she looked like little bride to me ha ha.

The most common practice is to dip the communion wfer into the wine,a nd serve it that way for children. But even when the children are given the sacramental wine from the chalice, they are given an extremely small sip. It is not like they can get ahold of the chalice, and drink it themselves. The chalice is held by the priest or the deacon, and they are given a small sip. None of the parishoners hold the chalice themselves, nor dothey touch the communion wafer.

Celebrating the Sabbath.

In a residential facility such as this, it is possible thatthey would make adjsutments in their observation of the Sabbath, even when keeping Kosher due to the needs of the residents. But this was also a Sabbath observance in a residential home, and not in the Temple. Likewise, Jewish do not receive communion.

Catholic doctrine and practice is not set individually, but by the governing body of the Catholic Church.

Yeah, you were just part of the congregational communion.

That is the intent. First Communion is symbolic of marrying to to the Church.

How if I never took the classes? Or did I slip thru the "cracks" and somehow got my communion without realizing it? Oh, that would make my Catholic grandma happy cuz she used to berate my parents for not being committed to it. :giggle:

When I was 16 or so, my foster family invited me to go to their Catholic church with them one time, and I didn't know that, not being Catholic, that I wasn't supposed to take the holy communion, and I took it. I was chastised for that by some other Catholics. Oops.

You just slipped through the cracks, lol! If you are a visitor in the church, the parish priest has no way of knowing whether you were confirmed or not. They just assume that if you are Catholic, and attending mass and taking the sacraments, that you have been confirmed. Now, if you are not a visitor, and try to take the sacraments before Confirmation, there will be some trouble! :giggle:

U know what? I was too which was why I went home crying to my mom saying I didnt like it. I was confused.

Anyways, looking back, I have to laugh! It is funny now that I think about it. LOL!
