In the foot steps of Hear Again and typeing...

Thanks so much Hear Again! I thought about many of the same things.

Construction for example. In my city, particularly on the road I live and go to school on, there seems to always be construction on some part of the road. It would be nice to have a guide dog to tell me "Nika, there's a 20 foot ditch up ahead--cross the street!"

You mentioned your cane tip getting caught in sidewalk cracks. Being jabbed in the stomach sounds painful. Don't they have certain cane tips that are larger than the sidewalk crack to prevent that from happening, such as the marshmallow tip?

Wow, I can't believe people asked you if Sugar or Tigger were blind. It would be nice if more people recognized that pet dogs are on leashes and service dogs have special harnesses.

What appeals to me most about the long cane is the constant contact technique.

you're welcome! <smile>

i use a large roller tip on all of my canes, but it still gets caught when i use the constant contact technique. i've tried using the marshmallow tip, but don't like the vibration i feel in my wrists. with a roller tip, i don't get that.

you'd be amazed at the silly things people say about tigger (and what they've said about sugar). whenever people ask me if tigger is blind, i always tell them, "i hope not!" <smile>

Does anyone know any other signed languages as in BSL, LSF, NZSL, Chinese SL, etc. ?

All right I'm bored again. Feel free to keep 'em coming, folks.

I hope no one asked you this... i didnt notice it, but what is the cause of your blindness?

I have a lot issues going on at the same time but the main blinding ones are glaucoma and some neurological issues. How about you?

nika,

if this is too personal a question, you don't have to answer it, but do you ever experience glaucoma headaches? one of my best friends has glaucoma and she experiences severe headaches because of it. i'm just curious if you do too.

I created a ask me thread but nobody wanted to ask me any questions

You mentioned being blind at birth...do you have ROP?

yes, i do. (for others reading this, rop stands for retinopathy of prematurity). both of my retinas detached at birth leaving me totally blind.

by the way, i'm sorry to hear about your glaucoma headaches. from what my friend told me, the pain can be excrutiating. i do have some idea of what that's like though because i have a 21 year history of migraines.

I was born blind too from malnutrition and some other issues. But through a lot of therapy and surgery got a lot of my vision back. Now I'm blind again. How many people get to go blind twice in one lifetime?

I'm sorry, that really stinks, but on the bright side at least you get to be one of a kind.

i hope you don't take this the wrong way, but i find that interesting. i can't say that i've ever known someone who went blind twice in their lives.

do doctors think you'll ever get your sight back? (if that's too personal a question, you don't have to answer it.)

Oh I meant the whole going blind twice more in a humorous way. <smile>

Even when I was sighted for the first time at 12 it was really hard for me to interpret visual information and to use my vision because I was just so not used to it.
