In the foot steps of Hear Again and typeing...

Very interesting! Linguistics is one of my areas of interest. Psychology and language are inexplicably tied together.
I agree 100%
Do you find that your study of linguistics leads you into other domains, such as anthropology or sociology or psychology?

Yes, definitely. I find all three of those subjects very interesting! How about you?

And I do, as well. There is so much crossover, that knowledge of one enhances knowledge of the other.

I have the same issues as a deaf person. It gets old so fast!

I think it's a common thread for any minority. We have to constantly fight stereotypes and prove people wrong. But sometimes we just want to live our lives, instead of being an activist for [Insert topic] awareness 24/7.

Yea, at my job I cant speak out against any method of communication especially oralism so it is hard to refrain myself. LOL!

What's the best thing about being blind?

How come you can't?

I don't have to drive! When I started learning to drive (while still sighted) I absolutely hated it. And now I never have to worry about it!

Professionalism and ethics....I can make recommendations but if a parent want oral only without ASL, we can only make recommendations to other programs. I grew up oral-only and I hated it. It cut me off from the rest of the world most of the time.

Wow, I assumed that every blind person wishes they could drive. Just my ignorance. :)

How did u lose your sight?

Me too.

I mostly compose Jazz music in my free time. I also love chatting online, reading, doing research, cooking, and going for walks. How about you?

That's cool. I like Jazz music as well. Do you have samples around?

I do a multitude of various random things to get by in my life. Usually most of these things make next to little or no impact for the "modern business" world.

Examples..
- Observing People: Going to parks and the grocery store is always interesting. I majored in Sociology in college. I lost most of my hearing throughout my teens, I have been told that my eyes are like super-developed in return.
- Helping people: Which is why I worked as a IT Network Technician for over a year, but quit for a new profession - I want to become a forensic lab technician that works for a police dept. or government.
- Gaining new hobbies and losing them, rehashing old hobbies - Saw a movie called Valkyrie by Tom Cruise last night, depicted a real life WW2 story. This in turn influenced me to get back on a childhood TV show I used to watch in the 80's, called COMBAT! You can click on the following link to hear an example: Click here to hear on youtube the show's ending credits that I just uploaded, which are nostalgic to me.
- Abstract, rethorical, and mathematical thinking: A few of them you might've stumbled on already, like my question about a stunt in James Bond GoldenEye, if the physics were possible, and my other thread about society and money.
- Checking what I do is in "sync" with other people as a norm. Like I was checking if armpit shaving was normal with others!

That pretty much is me in a nutshell. Oh, and I also vigorously attempt to do a certain amount of exercise every week.

You live in D.C. and you have 54 inches of snow on the ground? Or was this number cumulative?

Professionalism and ethics....I can make recommendations
Oh, hadn't thought about that. At least you can make recommendations--that's better than nothing.
Wow, I assumed that every blind person wishes they could drive.
I bet I'm part of the .01% of blind people that is happy to take the passenger's seat. <laugh>
How did u lose your sight?
I have several eye problems, but the main blinding ones are glaucoma and neurological.

Are you studying anthropology, sociology, psychology, or linguistics?

One of my areas of interest within linguistics is sociolinguistics.

My BA is in psychology with a sociology minor, and 2 courses shy of an anthropology minor. When I was working on my Master in counseling psychology, I picked up several linguistics courses, as the tie between language and perceptions is so important. I just defended my dissertation for my Ph.D. in counseling psychology, and am waiting to hear from the panel. I find the cultural aspects of sociolinguistics to be extremely interesting...the circular connection between language and culture and social influences and the ways in which they progress and change in a linear fashion. One cannot remain stagnant if the other two change, and it is difficult to know which influences the other at various points as they are so interdependent.

Sometimes the recommendations I have to make arent in the child's best interests but the parents have full power in deciding how their deaf children will communicate. Usually it is oral-only at first and when it fails, they resort to other methods...it is just a shame that oralism comes first in 95% of the cases.

How did u learn Persain?

That's cool. I like Jazz music as well. Do you have samples around?
Yes. Here are some YouTube links:

If you like them, you can just YouTube search nid2008 and all my videos will come up.
Observing People
Me too! I love following conversations and noticing patterns, linguistic rituals, etc.
Oh, and I also vigorously attempt to do a certain amount of exercise every week.
What kind of exercise do you do?

Very cool! What was your dissertation on? (I love psychology so you can get detailed if you want.)
I find the cultural aspects of sociolinguistics to be extremely interesting...the circular connection between language and culture and social influences
Yes, exactly! I plan on going into this exact field, actually. I want to use this relationship to do diversity work by using language as an instrument for change in opinions about other social groups. <smile>

Nika, if you're blind, how is it that you're able to reply to posts sent on a computer? Do you have someone helping you or something?

People's attitudes. How many people assume I can't do this or that because I'm blind.

i agree, nika. that is annoying.

how did you go about learning braille? did you take a correspondence course through hadley, learn it at an nfb training center or did you teach it to yourself?

Nika, if you're blind, how is it that you're able to reply to posts sent on a computer?

I use screen reader technology where the computer converts text into speech and reads to me everything on the screen. It also reads whatever I type.
