Someone told me that I am not culturally Deaf even though I feel like I am now only cuz I grew up orally. Then again, others say I am so I just say screw it...I am part of the Deaf community...keep it simple! :giggle:

There you go. You choose for yourself how you want to i.d.

I found that interesting as well, as she is not old enough to i.d. as Deaf herself. Kind of like a hearing person assigning another person a sign name.

I am Deaf as of last year even though I was born deaf. and my journey just started. I just signed up for ASL classes today (just 15 min before closing hour :laugh2:)

:cool2:

Y'know, I was thinking. We can just have one of our usual ASL/Oral/CI debate arguments in here, get our share of steam off on each other, and it would satisfy gradstudent's desires without us even trying ;).

Just consider it a learning experience for all of us.

This is from Hear Again's log "A New Beginning"
I was born with normal hearing. By age 3, I was diagnosed with a
mild hearing loss. Hearing aids and ear surgery were recommended for me at
the time but because of issues related to my parents' health insurance, I
went without. Fortunately I was able to function quite well until age 15
when I received my first pair of hearing aids for a moderate to severe loss.

My hearing loss progressed into the severe-profound range by the
time I was 25.

So everybody was wrong!

YAY! yay! YAY!

Yup... I feel the same way

So, no child is Deaf?

Deaf of Deaf could certainly be considered to be culturally Deaf, as they are raised with the norms, values, and philosophies of the culture.

Deaf of hearing are raised with the values, norms, and philosophies of the hearing. They can choose to change their i.d. when they are able to distinquish the differnces inherent between the two cultures. Until then, they are deaf being raised in hearing culture.

Three cheers for Jiro!!:cheers::cheers::cheers:

Hear Again functioned with no hearing aids until 15.

Hi everyone,

According to my former hearing aid audis, I was born with a mild hearing loss since newborns weren't given hearing screenings back in the late 60s/early 70s. Technically I don't have any records to say that I was born with a mild loss, but everything points in that direction given the fact that I only weighed 2 pounds at birth, was given ototoxic drugs while in the neonatal ICU as well as the fact that hearing loss is a secondary complication to ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). I know my posts here on AD have been confusing because I originally said that I was born with normal hearing, but I actually believe that I was born with a mild loss given what I stated above. I hope this helps clarify any confusion.

What about those deaf of hearing who lived at the residential schools? :hmm:

What if a child is born to hearing parents, but raised with the norms, values and philosophies of the Deaf community?

That was what I thought too...:hmm:

I still have lots to learn about the Deaf community and etc

This thread just took off like the superbowl kick. I am reading everyone's opinions!! Just fyi.

Bott,

I don't understand. Are you saying I'm postlingually deaf or prelingually deaf? I tend to think I'm postlingual only because I could hear speech pretty well until age 15 when I received my first pair of hearing aids for a moderately-severe loss. Jillio? Do you have any comments about my question? I was born with a mild hearing loss (given my newborn history)
