So if you are born with a hearing loss, but not fully, audiologically profoundly deaf, you can't be Deaf? Wow, that was never what other Deaf people told me.

Nope, that is not what is being said at all. We are saying that i.d.ing yourself as Deaf is a personal choice made by an individual that is deaf.

Y'know, I was thinking. We can just have one of our usual ASL/Oral/CI debate arguments in here, get our share of steam off on each other, and it would satisfy gradstudent's desires without us even trying ;).

ASL is her first, native, and primary language. I have no idea how many times I have said that, though it seems that people choose to ignore it.

That is not the only aspect of i.d.ing oneself as Deaf.

She made all those choices for herself before kindergarten?

Yes. She was offered spoken language and ASL. She picked up ASL, and had no interest in spoken languge (for the first 4 years). She simply viewed it as a game. We also visited all the school programs with her and she made it know, very clearly that she prefered th bi-bi school. She also would tell us her lists of friends and they rarely included the hearing kids she was around. She prefered that company of (since apparently I can't use the word Deaf) other ASL users.

I am not in the mood for another debate...the last few days were more than enough. I need a break!

The Deaf community used to be very against the CI about 10 years ago but that is changing now. It is more of the audist view that comes with the CI that the Deaf community is against, not the CIs themselves.

Bingo.

That will be fine, we can do that. shhhhh

I think you have a misconception of the big "D" and the little "d'

As you move on and learn more about the deaf culture. I am deaf but I am not considered a big "D" because I speak and talk. I don't just use ASL and I don't mind using my hearing aids or speaking.

The big "D" is completely different. They are Deaf and Proud. They do not need devices to help them to hear. They rely solely on ASL. not hearing aids or CIs..

Hey I am not a big "D"

but I am well accepted by most of them...

Or, gradstudent could use the search feature and find plenty of material.

Hear Again was born with a hearing loss.

I thought she was born hearing and then her hearing got progressively worse until she became deaf when she was older?

Yea, u can be Deaf if born with a hearing loss...I know a few Deaf people who have mild hearing losses. :dunno:

I was under the impression that she was born with a loss, but that it was late identified and progressive.

Perhaps we should wait and let her explain.

That's what I always thought too.

But the point is, it is an i.d. that they consciously choose for themselves. It is more than what language they use, and what their level of loss is, or even who the majority of their friends are. It is a philosophical and ethical approach to life.

So, no child is Deaf?

Someone told me that I am not culturally Deaf even though I feel like I am now only cuz I grew up orally. Then again, others say I am so I just say screw it...I am part of the Deaf community...keep it simple! :giggle:

This is from Hear Again's log "A New Beginning"
I was born with normal hearing. By age 3, I was diagnosed with a
mild hearing loss. Hearing aids and ear surgery were recommended for me at
the time but because of issues related to my parents' health insurance, I
went without. Fortunately I was able to function quite well until age 15
when I received my first pair of hearing aids for a moderate to severe loss.

My hearing loss progressed into the severe-profound range by the
time I was 25.
