My father used to had Ford truck (early 1970s) with no catalytic converter and it was gift from my grandmother after death of my grandfather in 1995. I didn't have eye irritation or coughing, but there are some people are more sensitive to smog. My father traded old truck in 2000 to newer big Chevy truck but he had to sold his truck in 2002 to cover the medical bill for heart surgery. I remember about old truck had small white smog, but not really bad for older cars with no CC.

white smoke is water vapors..harmless
Black smoke is raw gas that didnt burn
Blue smoke is oil burning from bad rings or valve guide seals...
You dont know as much as you claim.

That's not what I'm talking about so read carefully.

I clearly state that without CC make small white smog come out like you see in old school cars - that's normal for cars to exhaust the small smog.

A lot of black or white smoking indicate that cars have problem with engine, auto parts or bad CC.

I already saw with my father's old truck when I was kid and I never forgot about how bad was smell.

I'm talking about LARGE AMOUNT of smog, not small smog.

The large amount of smog has nothing with gutted CC.

emmissions inspections is a joke...everyone cheats it.
Safety inspection should be manditory... thats where the accidents are caused from, people dont replace brakes, bad ball joints snap, no brake lights/headlights, it all adds up, Ive seen cars here that the tires are ready to pop off as the ball joints are ready to break which causes loss of control of vehicle. And a tire rolling alone at 55-70mph can do some major damage or even kill someone.

So you keep singing this tune to You love the emmissions cntrol, but yet you have NO SAFETY OR EMMISSION CONTROL... Why arent you fighting your govenment on this, refuse to do without it and continue to live there? Praise the higher ups yet sit with the Devil.

SEE, again said I was wrong but was wrong again... first is raw/excessive fuel , second is water vapors .

with or without cats will have same results if too rich or blown gaskets.

If the vehicle w/ gutted cat, may pass emission in other state than California, is because the emission level in NC is higher, here is example.. Max emission measurement is about HC- 150 or more ppm, CO- 1.5% and NOx- 1000ppm is perfect for bad cat that car can pass the inspection. But in Calif, MAX emission measurement for HC is 0.40ppm or less, CO- 0.50% and NOx -350ish ppm. Tightest emission.. Newer vehicles emits very thin emission like HC- 0.05 or less ppm, CO/NOx both zero. Some states have similar to Calif emission system...

Small amount of white smog = normal and harmless

Large amount of smog = indicate that vehicles may have problem so need to check-up.

I know someone whose Corvette was modified and was loud. The CHP heard it and pulled him over... he was lucky his car was not towed away but gave him a big ticket. He had to change it back to stock and had to sell his car. So you can't really mess with California with those modified cars.... it won't last long if you drive it on the street.
 
Not insulting you, sorry if it come across like that.
Just saying its not all true, people believe because the government is drilling it in their heads and the new generation doesnt know any better....yet.

As far as the muffler you asked.... its all based on sound. Mufflers are only needed to quiet a vehicle if it is too loud. My truck is straight piped and it is barely louder than most new cars, only time you really hear it is if I get on it and "dog" the truck like racing it or getting up to highway speeds, once cruising/coasting it can barely be heard. Just a nice mellow rumble which surprises me as I thought without it that it would be really loud, didnt make a difference at all.
In the DMV handbook it even states mufflers are only needed if vehicle makes excessive noise, my truck is very quiet compared to all the ones around here and they have mufflers.

Basically when they make it obvious , yes.
Keep it quiet, low key ( called a sleeper ) and they will get by for years if they do it right.

Make the vehicle loud, draw attention...sure, you are advertising for trouble.

Here its called a fix it ticket. You fix it, prove in court and go about your way.
