Honestly, I don't know where it is, but it made me think of that.
 
Judging from the density of the trees and mountains, I would have to guess that it's either Virgina/West Virgina or somewhere in Canada.

Just in case I made it too difficult, I tell you it is somewhere in Iowa.
 
Was easy to guess, all I had to do was google for octagonal buildings!

What is this mystery fruit? Exact name is better.
 
Nope and nope. They are green while growing, and dark brown when they mature.

The consistency is similar to a washington apple when green.
The consistency is similar to a prune when fully brown with no patches of green left.

Wonder if I can provide any more hints without spoiling it!

I think it'll be a bit hard because there's like, hundreds of dates, so I'll break it down, but still by their latin names!
