Jillio, we use sizes 5, 6, 7 etc- 37 would be the continental european size. I used to wear a size 6 (I'm looking at a conversion chart and that's 8.5 American) but stayed away from actual shoes- high heels, or high sandals as my foot is usually floating above the shoe!
I always wore padded trainers laced up in a loose fit, then in the last year or so went shoe shopping and realised I'm a size 5 (US 7.5) in trainers and anything from a 3-5 in shoes- maryjanes seem to be the only 'shoes' I can wear except boots, and most high boots swamp my calves.
I have read that the standard shoe width is getting bigger- here it's hard to find specific widths unless you have especially wide feet. We can't get half sizes easily, apart from children's shoes- I'm intrigued how my feet translate to US half sizes. Children's shoes go up to size 5 though, so I can buy them, and they're cheaper as we don't have to pay VAT on them for some reason.
I've never considered clogs, I'll have to give that a try. I love the idea of lace up ankle boots with skirts
