Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery

. . . Hey, I'm all for prayer and spiritual and all that but there comes a point where you DO have to let go no matter what the age of the individual.
I believe in prayer, and that God always answers the prayers of believers. However, we must understand that God's answer to our prayer is not always what we want but what we must accept. God can answer "yes," "no," or "not yet." Those are all equally valid possible answers, and in the big picture of eternity we don't know what is the best answer for us but God does.

I'm afraid her family hasn't come to that point yet. :(

There so many hungry children that could use that money so they can stay alive and live a full life.
It would be a blessing for the family to donate that money to others in the name of their daughter. I've seen many times how giving something (organs of the deceased, scholarships, support, etc.) in the name and memory of a loved one has eased the pain of loss.

we sadly got case like this in my road poor woman been like this for two years giving birth to her first child...her husband divorced her and aunt and uncle adopted child... sad when these things happen but got walk in their shoes not easy call to make I prey never have to but I be inclined think I leave machines on

Birth is dangerous. Statistically it's the most dangerous day of a woman's life, same for the baby. This is why I don't understand homebirthers.

Back in the news again:

To bolster his claim that Jahi McMath should be declared “alive again,” the attorney for the Oakland teenager’s family displayed video clips Thursday that he says show the girl responding to her mother’s requests to move her feet and hands.

“Jahi suffered a serious brain injury — no doubt about it,’’ attorney Chris Dolan said. “But we question how accurate the brain-dead assessment is.”

Doctors at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland declared the 13-year-old girl brain dead in December after she went into cardiac arrest following routine surgery to deal with sleep apnea. Her family has fought the hospital every step of the way and says she is still alive.

Dolan said the goal was to “get the mantle of death off of her” so that Jahi can return to California from New Jersey, where she is being cared for by her mother, stepfather and sister at a private home.

In one video clip, which the attorney said was shot within the past few days, Jahi’s mother, Nailah Winkfield, is seen coaxing her daughter to move her foot and toes.

“Come on Jahi, you can do it,” Winkfield says, and after several seconds pass, the girl jerks her foot.

In another clip, the mother urges Jahai to move her hand, which is holding a foam padded cup. The girl lifts the cup a few inches, then drops it.

In both videos, Jahai is hooked up to a ventilator and feeding tube.

Dolan also showed still photos of Jahi in a cherubic state with her hair neatly pulled up in a bun and her skin appearing smooth and healthy.

The attorney said he would use the videos to support his filing this week in Alameda County Superior Court seeking to have a judge overturn his finding that there was “clear and convincing evidence” that doctors had properly declared Jahi brain dead.

He showed off the videos to reporters in his Market Street office, in a presentation that featured two large TV screens and a phone hookup with the head of a brain research foundation in New Jersey who took part in tests on Jahi at Rutgers University medical school.

If Dolan can persuade the court to overturn the judge’s death finding — as well as a subsequent ruling from the Alameda County coroner — she could be returned to her home in California, with the costs to care for her shifted to the state and possibly UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

Jahi can’t get health care in California now because of the declaration of brain death, Dolan said. “We can’t do anything now because under California law she is brain dead.”

If nothing else, the photos and video call into question assertions by hospital representatives last year that Jahi’s body would soon deteriorate.

In a court filing by the hospital in December, a critical care pediatrician at Children’s warned that “dramatic signs of the body’s deterioration will continue to manifest over time.’’

Dolan, on a speaker phone with Philip DeFina, chairman and CEO of the International Brain Research Foundation in New Jersey, said researchers had conducted brain imaging and other tests on Jahi at Rutgers University with the assistance of medical school neurologist Charles Prestigiacomo and found she had measurable brain activity.

“If the brain is dead, there is no electrical activity,” DeFina said.

Stanford bioethics Professor David Magnus, who has not seen the video showing Jahi’s movements or DeFina’s findings, disputed the validity of any test that wasn’t an independent clinical exam conducted by a qualified neurologist.

“I haven’t seen any signs or evidence that they have had such an evaluation,” he said. “The rest is smoke and mirrors.”

Magnus added, “Patients (found brain dead) don’t recover — it’s irreversible. That would be groundbreaking, and a dramatic finding that would be problematic for the entire neurological community.’’

DeFina said he wasn’t questioning the findings of Children’s examining doctors, but rather the adequacy of the test for brain death that was developed in the 1960s and is still the standard.

Videos show Mom coaxing, Jahi McMath moving

Watching the video, that wasnt coaching a movement, that was stimulating a reflex (tickling the feet) and can cause other nerves to respond ( other foot moving)
If mom yells move your foot and it moves then thats a different story, but brain dead is brain dead. They are going to make this harder on themselves the longer they keep her on life support.

I saw the video where it looks like a piece of broken glass was run across her foot and it jumped . What a crock of poop ! I am sure the lawyer is hoping to made a lot $$$ and it saying anything to get it . The girl is brain dead and needs to be unplugged .

All too sad. I think the family feels guilt and are trying to save her. But it seems a futile effort.

I had not heard any more about this so I thought the girl was buried 6 feet under where she should be. They should let the poor girl RIP.

It's easy to say when it's not your child. I do wish there was a specialist that could provide the family with more definitive results. It's important to distinguish between involuntary reflex with life.

If that was me I would not want to hooked up like that .

That is why you can make a living will to let the family know you don't want breathing machine if there were no hope for you to live like brain dead.
They have to comply your wish to die peacefully and dedicated.

I have a "Living Will" in case if I die someday. I don't want to be on the machine if there is no hope. And Also what I chose to be buried or cremated. You just have to make the decision to let the family know.

But it is too late for Jahi McMath as she was a minor. She does not have "Living Will" to support her wish to die peacefully and dedicated. That is why it is a mess when her parents refuse to let her go. That is sad. :(

when humans play God who live or die then got carry on and take consequence..
The Karen Quinlan case I think parents wanted keep her on ventilator dr took her off it and she breathe on her own

That is because Karen Quinlan was in a coma, not brain dead. They want to let her go. They were surprised that she can hold her breathing well without the machine. I remembered Karen Quinlan. She got sick after many years in the nursing home (possibly from pneumonia). I don't know. She never woke up, ever. Then she died finally. Rest In Peace, Karen Quinlan. :(

I watched the 2 videos of Jahi McMath. That is hard to believe that she can moved her foot only once. Did you see her toes were all very black? That is not healthy. As for her hand and arm, she does move including her body. I don't know what to believe or think. I know that dead people can move their bodies if going to be buried without removing their organs. They do reflex a lot like this. That is why coroners have to remove the dead person's brain so that they don't reflex, I think. Remember about the chicken that was beheaded and the whole body was moving all over the place before they stop moving. It take a while to stop.

So I think she just reflex as long as she is on life support machine. I don't know. She looked pretty much whole without deteriorating her body into waste at all. Very interesting. I just don't know what to make of this. :(

I'm wondering if they are taking pictures of another healthy girl and posting those for us to see. The photo of the young girls face just looks too good.

Burying a child is the most difficult thing you will ever have to do. I don't wish that kind of pain on anyone. You never get over it.

That is true that the family never got over it. They are not moving on and not letting go of her. They should and let Creator (God) look out for her. I think God would be happy to have her come home in heaven if she was removed from the life support machine. It is all up to God, period. God will make that decision. :(

sad thing is, its not a controlled move, Mom has said to move the foot how many times and it only moves once at the very end. The body can have spasms and if there is repetitive movements, yeah start acting like she is doing it on command to keep her on support. Here is a test for them... Have her to move her foot, then a hand then another foot and hand...wont happen
