Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery

Good point...

I think that Jahi's mother is so deep in her delusion that her daughter will recover that she will never ask to turn off the ventilator. They will wait until her heart gives out. I would guess that the families you met don't plan to keep their sons on the ventilator indefinitely while they refuse to accept that their child is dead.

If the family could actually smell the smells coming from Jahi's lungs I wonder if they would change their mind. The ventilator is a closed system so they don't smell the "rot" from her lungs.

Another thought occurred to me. If you look at the photos that her mom has put out of her holding Jahi's hand or putting ice to her feet, her mother has long nails. That means one of two things. Her photos were either taken shortly after she died, or that her mom isn't involved in her day to day care. You can't have long nails like that and safely or effectively do care on a body in the situation Jahi's body is in. It makes me wonder just really how involved she is in her child's care (if she's doing what she said she was doing) or if they see the body is in bad shape and they just are showing old photos. I have no problem with nurses and aides doing the care, but it means the mom isn't doing the nitty gritty that she said she was. The uncle said that they would post a full body photo of her on March 28th but that obviously did not happen.

Jahi Mcmath Fund by latasha spears-winkfield - GoFundMe

$61,249 have been donated. WOW, what a waste of money to spend on life support! (It's possible that her mom keeps it in her pocket instead of paying that bill.) BTW, I read that it costs about $7,000 per day.

It is INSANELY expensive to keep someone on life support... and the insurance company usually stops paying after the person has been issued a death certificate.

Then there is something fishy with Jahi's family. We will never know what is the purpose for making Jahi remain alive as long as her heart is or was pumping. Those cost of money to keep her alive on the machine seem far fetched to have to pay about $7,000 a day. Whoa. That is sad. :(

I am sorry for not clarifying. The article I read shows the average cost nationally. I have no idea how much it costs her. Maybe her girl is at home with life support or at a private clinic. The cost could be less or more, however $7k per day is an average cost at hospitals.

An update on Jahi...If you look at this site, you can see that she's both not doing well and I feel her corpse is being used wrongly. Her family sits her up in positions to make it seem as if she's doing it herself. According to what's being said, there's two photos in particular that show her condition. Well, three. There's a closeup of her foot which shows that she's starting to have contracture (look at her toes and the angle her foot is at) while her mother denies that is happening. Her feet also look discolored. If you look at the hand photos to "show off her manicure", there's one where her hand is left in a position that looks like the hand has contracture and was forced open. Another hand photo (where it's mostly blue, the manicure) you can see some dark spots on her fingers that look suspicious, like they are spots of necrosis. I'm not talking about the spot that looks possibly like a mole, i'm talking about the other spot and the area at her nailbeds. Both her hands and feet look excessively swollen, like fluid is collecting there because it can't get pumped through her system, and you can see the muscle atrophy in her legs.

The contracture/muscle atrophy would happen even if she weren't brain dead. If the body doesn't move it's going to have muscle wastage and the contracture, you see this in people who have brain injuries where they can't move themselves but they aren't brain dead.

Wow! This is just so sad... almost a year has passed and she is still being "cared for". I wonder how they manage with the cost for her care, I still don't understand why her mother is not letting her own daughter rest in peace. :(

Some people just cant let go, especially if its a first child?

Thoroughly disgusted by the photos and story. As much as I hate to write it, I think the girl should be taken off life support. I do not get what the family thinks would happen otherwise. There could only be a vegetative state at this point, at absolute best.

Yeah, like Terri Schavio.... I don't think any better will come out of this at all.

I had an uncle and aunt who had only child a son . He was diving with some friend and my cousin hit a rock and he almost drowned , they did not realize how badly he was hurt and rolled him on wooden barrel to get the water out of his lugs My cousin was not able to move and had no feeling in his body , this parents did not want keep him alive like a vegetable and decides to let their son die. His dad dies of a broken heart to days before his son did . I named my dog Marty afar my cousin that I never got to meet. I think it was very brave for my aunt and uncle to let their son die in peace and not prolong to his suffering

Was looking up the updated article and this was posted 2 weeks ago:

OAKLAND -- A New York facility that has tried to help Jahi McMath, the Oakland girl declared brain-dead last year, put out a call for back-to-school supplies, bedding and clothes for the teen, saying she was "coming home," and that the New Beginnings Community Center was loading a truck with donations.

But Christopher Dolan, the attorney for the family of 13-year-old Jahi, said the request on the Facebook page of the Medford, New York-based New Beginnings was false and the girl's mother isn't asking for anything but prayers for her daughter.

"The posting was not at their request, and while they appreciate the good intentions of those who want to help, they only ask for your prayers," Dolan posted on the Facebook page.

The original post was removed a short time later Sunday afternoon.

"Jahi's mother is not asking for any public assistance at this time at all," Dolan said Sunday. "Mom is just caring for her daughter as she always has done."

Jahi was declared brain-dead after a series of operations to remove her tonsils and tissue from her nose and throat in December at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. She continued to receive feeding and breathing support after the diagnosis as her family engaged hospital officials in a legal battle to keep the girl on organ support.

Following the post on the New Beginnings Facebook page, a few people used the hashtag #scamfam and tweeted that the family was being disingenuous with their request. Dolan countered the attacks.

"Aware of the negative comments made about her and her daughter, (Jahi's mother Nailah Winkfield) says it's sad that people have such hate in their hearts. She remains grateful for all the prayers and kind thoughts she and her daughter have received," said Dolan.

Calls to New Beginnings founder and President Allyson Scerri were not returned Sunday. The center calls itself a "state-of-the-art outpatient facility designed to provide rehabilitation, management and recovery for community members with traumatic brain injury, physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities or dementia."

In March, about three months after she was declared brain-dead by several doctors, the Oakland girl was taken to Saint Peter's Children's Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She likely went there because a 1991 state law gives patients and their families the right to reject a medical diagnosis of brain death on medical grounds and decide whether to continue organ support. The family still maintains the girl responds to voice commands and touch.

When she was moved, the Alameda County Coroner's office issued a death certificate for Jahi before allowing her body to be released from Children's Hospital Oakland, on the condition that whenever her organs shut down, the family would have to notify the coroner. The coroner had not been notified Sunday, a spokesman said.

While Winkfield reportedly told Dolan she did not ask for support through New Beginnings, she does have a connection to the center.

On Saturday, a local news site posted a story about New Beginnings honoring Jahi's mother and Marvin Winkfield, Jahi's stepfather, at a summer gala in part because they refused to accept doctors' findings and fought the hospital in court, the story says.

At the gala, Nailah Winkfield credited New Beginnings founder Scerri and the center -- which earlier this year agreed to provide around-the-clock care for Jahi -- for helping convince a California judge to sign an order authorizing the child's release from the Oakland hospital, according to the story on RiverheadLOCAL.com, an independent community news website.

Reports that Jahi McMath is coming home are false

WTF !! What does your tonsil have with to peeing too much and not being to think clearly??? this sound a lawsuit to me. I knew a girl in school that was HOH and she told me it was from having her tonsils removed .

I thought that. The only thing I can think of is her weight so bad it pressing on bladder and she wetting bed with sleep apnoea but I never seen tonsiectomy done for weight issues...Diet and exercise....I can understand why they want keep her on life support leave her on it,The parents will know the time...I no see lawsuit as they signed the ok for operation and small print says risks that go for all countries...

Baffling how money is 'pouring in' for a child who may, or will, never have a chance at a life let alone a normal life while there are so many others who are alive and well but struggling to make ends meet barely every month.

I was going to ask if she had siblings-- in googling- yes she does. I was going to say that I wonder just how hard it is on them but after reading the article where I found that info- they're in the same realm as their mother-- "she's still alive and will come back if we pray hard enough"

I also read the below on her wiki page--

In March 2014, the Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network awarded McMath's family an annual award. The award recognizes "the unconditional love they have for Jahi, and their courage as they continue the fight for their daughter against overwhelming odds". McMath's mother stated she was honored to receive the award and referred to her daughter as “still asleep”, clarifying she does not use the phrase "brain dead" to refer to her daughter.

"Still asleep"? Well... yeah the eternal sleep. I'm not understanding why they won't accept the facts of the tests & images that were done...

Hey, I'm all for prayer and spiritual and all that but there comes a point where you DO have to let go no matter what the age of the individual.

There so many hungry children that could use that money so they can stay alive and live a full life.

Perhaps guilt on her families part for giving her solid food in the hospital that caused her to hemorrhage after the tonsillectomy.

Holy crap they still haven't taken her off life support??!! People are freaking batshit.
