Experiences with my daughter.

It is because us Deaf people have experienced deafness firsthand. We know how it is like to be deaf. As long as we are signing with others, we don't feel disabled. When hearing people decided that their kids should be implanted, they are saying out loud that sign language is so wrong and that hearing is alot better than being deaf. That is why I see CI being so wrong. :pissed: Why does it take hearing people to really foul things up? Deaf education should be run by the Deaf people, not hearing people. It is much easier for the hearing people to learn ASL than deaf people learning to speak. So yes, we do know your children better than you do!

Sorry, but mutual deafness pales in comparision to bonds of love that are formed between a parent and a child.

Our decision to give our child a cochlear implant was made in part because we believe that there is nothing wrong with being able to hear and to speak and that we also see the value of being able to communicate effectively and effortlessly with the over 99% of the population that uses spoken language as their primary means of communication.

I agree with you that deaf education is fouled up and that is why we mainstreamed our daughter, to give her the best education possible and for her to go to school with her friends from her community.

Your little rant is nice and may amuse your Deaf friends at a cocktail party but please do not ever be so arrogant to think that you know why we made the decisions for our daughter and most of all that you know her better then we, her parents, do. For when you attmpt to limit her to her deafness then you are missing the essence of who she really is.

Then why is it that so many deaf adults express regret at their parents never learning sign language, and are basically estanged from them?

Yeah, can you imagine growing from infancy to adulthood getting nothing more than some pertinent arm-waving, gestures, unheard epithets and so on...from your own parents? Why, that's no different from being absolutely perfect strangers to one another....I know some are better than others but still....

Yep, one cannot form bonds without mutual communication!

Not true but since we have that mutual communication with our daughter that answers your question as well as that of all three posts above.

But still what?

Try actually making a statement for once.

but still this is terrible.
Rick, make like the turd ypu are and go lay on the front lawn!

Since the mods aren't enforcing much here, what the heck...

LOL! I thought I was the only one who was thinking that. I have to say, I'm amazed at what is tolerated - maybe all the mods are working long hours in their day jobs? This seems to be the most laissez faire board I've ever been on.

It's a bit like being on the Ricki Lake talk show. Everyone is talking loudly at once and then someone goes a bit far, so a scuffle takes place. Then they bring on the mistress to confront the wife. And then there is the audience in the background loudly cheering, eating popcorn and baying for more. It's obviously entertaining for a lot of people. Anyone see the similarities?

I see what you mean now, sorry. What I meant to say far more articulately is for you actually state what your position is instead of just sort of standing on the sidelines of these debates but I can see how your interpretation was made and quite frankly it is the more reasonable one to have drawn from my comments. So, I appologize for offending you but that was not my intention and take your comments as being well deserved.

But really, what is your problem with hearing parents and deaf children who can communicate effectively and effortlessly with each other through spoken language? That is a far cry from the arm gesturing you mentioned.

What is the problem with "hearing parents and deaf children who can.........."?
Its pretty well known (I have no stats, etc to link to) that 75% of oral deaf kids are failures because of the oral only approach. Since your daughter is older and whatever else you've said to indicate that she's happy, healthy etc, then I'm glad she's one of the 25%.
What I advocate for is the two-pronged approach that the Bi Bi system is wherein the child is exposed to both the oral (if the child passes muster) approach and ASL, the natural language of the deaf. Others here have said it ever so more eloquently than I can.

Artoo, I apologize for contributing and overstepping the bounds.

:bowlol:

No offense to your thread ,Cloggy but that post was just too funny.

And exactly how is it that bonds are formed without mutual communication? Communication is necessary for meaningful interaction, and it is from meaningful interaction that bonds are created. I would be interested in your hypothesis on the ways in which one can bypass such, and still arrive at bonding.

Well put, Tousi.

I am thinking the 75% stat failure for oralism comes from the Conrad study in 1979 of school leavers in the UK? Apparently, 50% of the school leavers had so poor reading and writing skills that they couldn't even do the test, which was constructed at the language level of the average 7 year old hearing child. Is this where the stats you are referring to comes from Tousi?
