It is because us Deaf people have experienced deafness firsthand. We know how it is like to be deaf. As long as we are signing with others, we don't feel disabled. When hearing people decided that their kids should be implanted, they are saying out loud that sign language is so wrong and that hearing is alot better than being deaf. That is why I see CI being so wrong. Why does it take hearing people to really foul things up? Deaf education should be run by the Deaf people, not hearing people. It is much easier for the hearing people to learn ASL than deaf people learning to speak. So yes, we do know your children better than you do!
Sorry, but mutual deafness pales in comparision to bonds of love that are formed between a parent and a child.
Our decision to give our child a cochlear implant was made in part because we believe that there is nothing wrong with being able to hear and to speak and that we also see the value of being able to communicate effectively and effortlessly with the over 99% of the population that uses spoken language as their primary means of communication.
I agree with you that deaf education is fouled up and that is why we mainstreamed our daughter, to give her the best education possible and for her to go to school with her friends from her community.
Your little rant is nice and may amuse your Deaf friends at a cocktail party but please do not ever be so arrogant to think that you know why we made the decisions for our daughter and most of all that you know her better then we, her parents, do. For when you attmpt to limit her to her deafness then you are missing the essence of who she really is.
