doctors cannot ask about guns

I find this thread hilarious, especially when people are agreeing with banning doctors from asking about firearms.

Because... umm... there are SO MANY other things that doctors can ask you that could somewhat link you to "child abuse" (not that asking would automatically imply child abuse, but seems like that's what some people perceive here) such as alcohol, drugs (legal or illegal), sharp objects, even whether you own belts!!! (You may hit your child with a belt). So I'm kinda thinking to myself "Well, if you're so adamant about banning doctors from asking you about firearms, might as well ban them from asking you anything else!!!" It's actually kinda dumb to ban doctors from asking you about SPECIFICALLY only firearms..... It's almost like banning ONLY .44 guns out of all the guns that exist!

I still don't understand why you can't simply not answer their questions. What are the repercussions for not answering their questions? Refusal of treatment? Wouldn't the doctors be scared of being sued for not providing treatment because of this? We all know America is sue-happy!

I have a problem with being recorded.

meanie teacher with her red pen and gradebook!

here in NJ and NY.

but have you taken any formal training in schizophrenia subject? Can I count on doctors taking any formal training in firearm? not really. Their knowledge is, at best, skimmed over from pamphlet or article. I wouldn't be surprised if they formed a bias or misconception.

because..... people with guns know exactly what they're talking about and they can effectively communicate it. You have to take into factor that people do not like to listen to people with no background in it.

I know a lot of people with guns that don't have a clue what they are talking about. If they did, we would not have the rate of childhood deaths and injuries from guns being kept unsafely in a home that we have.

And you don't like to accept the fact that just because you own a gun does not make you an expert in anything.

Banjo already gave them to you. And gun deaths remain the most preventable.

that's not really a credible source. I'd like to see one from organization/government agency.

but I'd like to see official list of top 3 causes for child death and injury. and how old are we talking about in here? a toddler to what? 12?

First of all, read what the article said. Hell, read the damn quote! It said gun accidents is 3rd leading cause of death in young people, behind auto accidents and cancer.

Now, think about it - accidents happen. We MUST rely on transportation - that's fact of life. We cannot stay inside the house. Cancer? Well, that happens. It's not preventable (especially in young).

Now, with guns... I read that you're MUCH more likely to die from gun accident than to defend yourself with it. Does it make sense to own a gun if you're more likely to die from using it than to defend yourself? That's a valid view that every parent should think about it.

I don't claim to be an expert in it.. which is why I don't lecture to people about it. Unless I get certified in it, I don't get to lecture them and criticize them.

not really.

no problem with doctor marking it in his file and maybe call social worker to investigate this matter further when you refuse to consider cochlear implant option?

Nope. Notes and records of every visit made and everything discussed was kept. I would have been upset if it hadn't been. Refusing to consider a cochlear implant is not an issue for social services to attend to. My doctor knows it and I know it. I wasn't doing anything wrong. Why would I be concerned?

funny. you're so hell-bent on me answering your questions and yet.... you conveniently don't answer my questions when I repeatedly asked you :laugh2:

I've answered every question you have asked me. Evidently you are unable to read the answers. It doesn't count when you ignore them just because they aren't what you want to hear.

Jiro seems to be the only one that can't grasp this.

And I suppose you know then, that pediatricians are certified and licensed to discuss issues related to child safety with parents. Case closed. You are not certified, they are.:laugh2:

From my earlier post:

A Mom took her toddler to their pediatrician, who had been the child’s pediatrician since he was born.

Out of the clear, the pediatrician asked if she or her husband owned any guns. She was shocked and responded by asking, “Do YOU own a gun?”

He told her that whether or not HE owned a gun was none of her business. She responded by saying “right back at you.” The doctor got angry and walked out of the room.

The mom waited for 30 minutes before a nurse came in and said the doctor wasn’t coming back so she could leave. She dressed her son and left without the child ever being examined.

The doctor’s office sent her a bill, because she walked out without paying. She wouldn’t pay the bill because the doctor walked out without examining her child.

The bill was turned over to a collection agency. The collection agency started harassing the family and threatening their credit.

Her husband hired a lawyer. The doctor told the lawyer it was all the Mom’s fault, because she wouldn’t answer his question and as a doctor, he had a right to ask any “damn” thing he wanted to.

The doctor’s lawyer then got involved and advised the doctor to cancel the bill and apologize to the family. The doctor canceled the bill, but never apologized. Then told the family to find a new doctor.

That's what can happen.

Not at all.

It's because they don't want their guns confiscated by any government agency.

Like what happened in Germany to the Jews before World War II.

Like what happened in New Orleans to American citizens after Katrina.

Um, that's paranoia.

How one-sided.

THAT?!!?! Because of an arrogant doctor?!!?!? The woman can easily win a case against that doctor. In fact, in the example you gave, looks like it was resolved.

You really think we should create a law because of an arrogant doctor?! I've had a lot of a-holes in my life. That doesn't mean a law should be created to shut them up!

And your point is? She found a new pediatrician. Hopefully, she has more faith in the second one than she did in the first.

Still does not show where the doctor failed to render medically necessary treatment.

Exactly. Find a new doctor. If they are that big an a..hole, they won't be in practice long anyway.

He was an asshole but that patient was even a bigger bitch. I would refuse service to bitches and assholes.
