but there are deaf people who do not sign and who are happy and well adjusted individuals

Not quite true, For one thing, I grew up having deaf friends that were cuers and not signers because some of their parents didn't take the effort to learn sign language in order to communicate and perhaps their parents didn't provide all the tools that are out there and instead they made their children grew up oral...Most of them learn sign language later on, when some of them didn't...and I even heard them saying " I wish I knew sign language when I was younger "

I think Sweetmind already posted this? You can read her thread which was closed (surprise surprise) to get an idea of how people feel about it.

Well, all I can say it's controversial whether a baby is implanted at 6 months or at age 3 and sometimes even when the deaf person is an adult making their own choice. You can't make everyone or every group happy in life as we are all very diverse. I'd say research whatever you do extensively and make an informed choice that is best for you, your family and your child.

yes, I Remember that issues.. Sweetmind already have posted that issue about children with CI. But got to remember it a personal choice. I don't agree with letting such a small child to have CI so young without knowing what are the risk involoved for kids. I think if fine for adult to have CI since they are less at risk then a small child. But I respect everybody point of view on their views on CI.

Really nothing? I am one of those adults who have made that claim that I wish I had been exposed to ASL and the Deaf community rather than just hearing kids only growing up. Numerous of my friends who grew up orally have expressed the same thing as I do. They are fully active in the Deaf community instead of the hearing community because they feel the same as too...that their deafness is not handicapping and that they are just like anyone.

So, how is it Jillo is basing her observations on nothing?

Exactly, shel. My observations are based on 20 years of interacting with the deaf community. That is hardly nothing. But perhaps cloggy doesn;t feel the need to pay attention to what is right in front of him, and feels that he will never have need for what the dea community can teach, because, after all, his daughter doesn't have anything in common with deaf kids.:dunno:

Nope.... doesn't describe Rick nor "those who subscribe to his views"..
You're wrong...!!

Why is it that all you can see in a deaf child is the ability to not hear?

That is not all I see, cloggy. But quite obviously, it is all you see.

Fuzzy,

I have to say that is one of the best posts I have ever read. Not only did you pick apart each point with a cogent argument but your use of humor had me laughing out loud. thanks for making my day and its not even 10am!

Why doesn't that surprise me?

...Most of them learn sign language later on, when some of them didn't...and I even heard them saying " I wish I knew sign language when I was younger "

Angel could you clear this up a little bit? The "when some of the didn't" part is where I'm getting mixed up. I'm finding it hard to get that part to go with the "i wish I knew sign language when I was younger."

I think you are saying that of those that learned sign they wished they had learned it sooner?

And I hope that I'm making sense? I do understand tha somtimes the thoughts move faster then the fingers and we miss a word that would have made all the difference in the world.

what she's saying is when some of them didn't learn sign language at an early age wished they had learned at an early age, but instead they've learned later on thru the years. yes, jag.. that's what she's saying.

Same here..I see much more than the deaf child's ability or inability to hear.

Sorry, but since I know them personally, it is quite true.
Rick

Yes, there are always exceptions....

That would be your perception of what is true for them. A perception fo the truth is often quite differnt than the truth itself. Just look around at the number of deaf posters on here that were raised orally but learned sign, and regretted that this method of communication was withheld from them. That is their truth.

And there are many more that I know personally..much more than I can count using my fingers!

Yes that what I meant, :ty: RebelGirlie

However, if it was told to me by them then it is not my perception but, as just like the posters you refer to here, it would be THEIR truth.

Absolutely. So you have asked these people specifically, the relevent quetion?

Some asked, some volunteered the information without having to ask during the course of conversations.
