Well, I am still on Crowley's side.

Gates and Obama did so wrong... =/

Jiro and Koko are right. Obama don't sorry about it.

Powell: Both Gates, police could have handled things better
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday that he has been the victim of racial profiling but believes Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. could have been more patient with the police officer who arrested him.

At the same time, Powell also faulted the Cambridge (Massachusetts) Police Department for escalating the situation beyond a reasonable level.

"I think Skip [Gates], perhaps in this instance, might have waited a while, come outside, talked to the officer and that might have been the end of it," Powell said in an interview with CNN's Larry King.

"I think he should have reflected on whether or not this was the time to make that big a deal.

"I think in this case the situation was made much more difficult on the part of the Cambridge Police Department," Powell said. "Once they felt they had to bring Dr. Gates out of the house and to handcuff him, I would've thought at that point, some adult supervision would have stepped in and said 'OK look, it is his house. Let's not take this any further, take the handcuffs off, good night Dr. Gates.' "

Gates, a top African-American scholar, was arrested July 16 for disorderly conduct outside his Cambridge, Massachusetts, home after police responded to a report of a possible burglary. The charge was later dropped.

Powell said that under the circumstances, Gates may not have been in the appropriate frame of mind to best handle the situation.

"He was just home from China, just home from New York. All he wanted to do was get to bed. His door was jammed and so he was in a mood where he said something," Powell said.

He recalled a lesson he was taught as a child: "When you're faced with an officer who is trying to do his job and get to the bottom of something, this is not the time to get in an argument with him.

"There is no African-American in this county who has not been exposed to this kind of situation," Powell said. "Do you get angry? Yes. Do you manifest that anger? Do you protest? Do you try to get things fixed? But it's the better course of action to try and take it easy and don't let your anger make the current situation worse."

The former secretary of state said he has been racially profiled "many times," including an incident that took place while he was the national security adviser to President Reagan.

"Nobody thought I could possibly be the national security adviser to the president. I was just a black guy at Reagan National Airport," Powell said. "And it was only when I went to the counter and said, 'Is my guest here waiting for me?' that someone said, 'Oh, you're Gen. Powell.' It was inconceivable to him that a black guy could be the national security adviser."

When asked how he dealt with the situation, Powell said, "You just suck it up -- what are you going to do? It was a teaching point for him. 'Yes, I'm the national security adviser, I'm black, and watch, I can do the job.' "

In the interview, Powell touched on other issues, ranging from North Korea to U.S. figures such as Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh.

While North Korea may be "bizarre," he said, their negotiators are second to none.

"They are some of the best, toughest negotiators I've ever dealt with," Powell said. "And you can read the whole history of our negotiations with North Korea, going back to the Korean armistice discussion, and you'll find they know what their negotiating positions are, and they will drive you crazy, and they will use your impatience against you."

The former secretary praised the United States' current top diplomat, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Powell said Clinton was handling North Korean relations "properly" by insisting that dialogue with Pyongyang be limited to the six-party framework.

Powell said Clinton seems to be "in the mold of almost all secretaries I have known."

rest is deleted because it's not related to this issue
again - do not argue with police. be cooperative and respectful to police and they will return same manner to you. If the officers did not - calm down and continue to be respectful and cooperative. File a complaint against that rude officer later. :)

yes an arrest was not necessary but it was understandable. It was not illegal arrest as well.

then surely - you should be able to understand officer's position.

Funny - you worked for police unit in London.... and yet you have an extreme agenda against the police. You currently work for US military..... and yet you have an extreme agenda against them.

What's going on in here.... :hmm: Are you a double agent, serving as an agitator? :hmm:

Against Israel, too.

This is his/her opinion like you, me and everyone. :) The fact is we have both sides of the story between Police Officer and Gates. It´s up to everyone to judge their story.
yes and now that both sides of the story are out, almost everyone agrees that Gates is a pompus ass who over reacted and Obama should appologise. :aw:

only a few can't seem to grasp this...

inviting people to have a beer inorder to save face, is NOT an apology. it is cowardly and shows little integrity...

:hmm: maybe Obama is tired of apologising to people. since Obama took office he has been acting to cameras saying: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I have inherited this problem from the Bush administration".... or maybe he doesn't have enough balls to deal with the fact has wrong...
apparently accountablity only means something when blaming the Bush administration about something... :aw:

Obama says "I'm sorry" if the problem was from Bush Administration but he doesn't say "I'm sorry" if the problem was his. :hmm:

John Payton, president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, said that unlike white presidents who could dance around racial issues, Mr. Obama had to be direct. “That’s the whole difference. Bush could punt. Obama can’t punt,” he said. “This issue resonates with him.”
OUCH! especially coming from NAACP!!!!

I do think Obama have to apologize and the police too. I would feel uncomfortable if someone did something wrong to me and offer me a beer without have some conservation to apologize to me.

That is my opinion and how I would exactly feel. Just a beer is not the solution.

........Michigan lawmaker Thaddeus McCotter introduced a legislation on Monday demanding that President Obama aplogize to Cambridge police officer James Crowley. McCotter pushes Obama apology res. - First Read - msnbc.com.........

If I were a lawmaker, I would not introduce a legislation to force Obama to apologize for his remarks. That would not a real apology. Obama would not mean it as if he is being forced to apologize. One should apologize with a sincere heart. That's real. I am not familiar with Lawmaker McCotter's conservative beliefs. If he holds his conservative beliefs, he would not waste his time.

I wouldn't either. It *is* a waste of time. It won't get passed but I think this was designed to keep the spotlight on Obama for his erroneous and irresponsible comment for a bit longer.

My rule of thumb when it comes to apologies- if it doesn't contain the words "sorry" or "apologize", it's not a real apology. I can say, "I screwed up", "I regret that", "I wish I have done that" etc. However, if I don't take that extra step and say "so I apologize" or "I'm sorry", I haven't apologized. That's because statements like "I regret" and "I wish" are about me and how I feel. If I'm shrewd about it, I can secretly mean "I regret I got in trouble" or "I wish I hadn't done that because now my poll numbers are sliding". But the words "sorry" or "I apologize" actually give something to the other person and let them know it's not about me, but about them.

let's see what happens on thursday.

will Obama apologise? will Obama grow a pair along with a spine? your questions maybe answered in the next episode of "Obamatard"

Perhaps. It's a speculation. A few days ago, MSNBC posted the Newsvine poll, "Should President Obama apologize for saying Cambridge police officers "acted stupidly" when they arrested Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.?"

It appears the survey thinks he should.
Newsvine - Should President Obama apologize for saying Cambridge police officers "acted stupidly" when they arrested Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.?

I keep having flashbacks from Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does." *slaps forehead*

Wow..... you guys put a lot of faith in the words "I'm sorry.", especially from politicians... Don't you realize that they will say ANYTHING to appease the majority?

I just heard her make a statement on the radio. She was very upset. People have been threatening her and calling her mother. It's awful how people have been treating her. :(

oh wow.....

this is why the President should have not commented on Crowley-Gates incident. Racial issue is a very dangerous and serious subject that can be easily misunderstood and angered by many.

Shame on you, Obama
