I just heard her make a statement on the radio. She was very upset. People have been threatening her and calling her mother. It's awful how people have been treating her. :(
what a shame. people are so easily influenced and behave like fools
this is why the President should have not commented on Crowley-Gates incident. Racial issue is a very dangerous and serious subject that can be easily misunderstood and angered by many.

Shame on you, Obama

:werd:

Wow..... you guys put a lot of faith in the words "I'm sorry.", especially from politicians... Don't you realize that they will say ANYTHING to appease the majority?
the Obama-Messiah is no different...

since he has publicly apologised yet, I think his speech writing & PR teams are busy trying to come up with yet another smoke and mirrors BS PC lie to the public....

bend over america and stick a straw in your butts, here comes Obama. Obama, gonna make you giggle with smoke blowing up your poop shooter

Caller in Gates case says she'd do it again

(CNN) -- In her first public appearance, the woman who made the 911 call that led to the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. said Wednesday she would make the call again if placed in the same situation.

The arrest and its aftermath have sparked accusations of racial profiling, and even President Obama has become involved. He plans to meet Thursday with Gates and the arresting officer, Sgt. James Crowley, at the White House.

Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct July 16 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after he had shown Crowley that the home he was suspected of breaking into was his. The charge was later dropped.

"If you're a concerned citizen, you should do the right thing if you're seeing something that seems suspicious. I would do the same thing," Lucia Whalen said. VideoWatch Whalen defend her actions »

Whalen said she contacted police after an older woman with no cell phone told her she was worried that someone was trying to break into the house.

She said she was en route to lunch when the woman approached her.

"I thought: 'I'm the one with the cell phone. I should probably call'" police, she explained.

Although Whalen never referred to black suspects when she called authorities about the suspected break-in, the incident prompted a heated discussion across the nation on race relations in the United States.

Police released tapes Monday of her 911 call. VideoListen to the entire 911 call »

On Wednesday, Whalen -- her voice shaky and sometimes breaking -- called the criticism of her actions "painful" and "difficult."

"People called me racist and said I caused all the turmoil that followed, and some even said threatening things that made me fear for my safety," she told reporters.

"I knew the truth but I didn't speak up right away, because I did not want to add to the controversy."

Whalen said the criticism of her had a ripple effect.

"Cambridge is a wonderful place, and when I was called racist and I was a target of scorn and of ridicule because of the things I never said, the criticism hurt me as a person, but it also hurt the community of Cambridge," she said, close to tears.

"Now that the tapes are out, I hope people can see that I tried to be careful and honest with my words.

"It never occurred to me that the way I reported what I saw would be analyzed by an entire nation. But so many people have responded with words of support. I hope now that the truth of the tapes will help heal the Cambridge community as much as it has helped to restore my reputation and integrity."

Asked whether she spoke to Crowley when he arrived at Gates' home, she said: "The only words I exchanged were 'I was the 911 caller,' and he said, 'Stay right there.' "

Whalen said she respects Gates and the police, despite her ordeal, and hoped that speaking out would not add to the controversy.

"I am proud to have been raised by two loving parents who instilled in me values, including love one another, be kind to strangers and do not judge people based on race, ethnicity or any other feature other than their character," said Whalen, who was born in the United States to Portuguese parents.

poor lady! she chose her words carefully and honestly when calling 911..... and Obama didn't even do same.... *SMH*

Obama unfortunately made it much worse by pulling up a race card out of his sleeve, commenting on the situation and calling the Cambridge cops stupid.

1) I wouldn't be surprised if Gates was indeed being belligerent.
2) I wouldn't be surprised if Crowley wouldn't arrest him if Gates was white but behaved the same.
3) I wouldn't be surprised if Gates wouldn't have been arrested if he just calmed down.

Honestly, who cares? It was a bad day for both of them and no real harm came out of it. Obama got a lesson on what happens when the President gives his own opinion. I think he should be allowed to give his own opinion but America isn't ready for it. Since I am an insignificant being in this big great nation, my own personal opinion is... Crowley did act kind of stupid. To me.. it's the same as a cop stopping me because my left headlight went out and ended up frisking me in order to BE SURE because he suspected something was up since I talked with a weird accent.

if the cop was frisking you for a suspected dui, call bullshit. the cop is coping a feel.
there are other ways to prove you are sober. simple as walking a straight line.

did this really happen to you?

No, I meant I "looked" and "sounded" suspicious, not being drunk or anything. Nah this didnt happen to me. I am just saying that I feel that's the same kind of level of stupidity as Crowley. The cop technically didn't do anything wrong and is "going by the book" but.... come on.....

In Crowley's defense, I think Gates was stupid too. They both are freakin' stupid.

And their reward? They get the meet the president!!!!

Edit: Actually, once a bartender refused to give me drinks because "I sounded like I had enough to drink." I didn't drink a thing at that point. True story!

Of course, we do. Some of us already know that the charming politicians will say anything no matter what. It'll be between the Cambridge police and Obama. Let's not give up that some decent politicians are out there. If one apologizes, fine. If one repeats it again, and breaks our trust, too bad. Gotta take it with a grain of salt.

Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both...tend to slur or are not being articulate. That give the police the right- probable cause to frisk them.

My Mexican brother drove too fast, hitting 100 mph, but he got pulled over, and a policeWOMAN asked him why he drove too fast. He needed to go to bathroom. It's not easy for a guy to tell a policewoman that he needs to go to potty. She gave him a warning. True story.

Obama invited them to have a beer chat, so he is trying to put out a fire.

it all depends on how much attitude Gate's was giving. cops have a lot off laws to book people with. most people including college professors are not totally familiar with. those laws do help the public. sometimes a bad cop will abuse those laws and book people with. i don't think crowley was being one of the bad cops. i think if gates didn't know anyone powerful he would still be in jail cell. think the police dropped the charges because of the public relations problem this case would cause. yet the problems came anyway.

there is a certin way to deal with police: cooperation, respectful communication and don't volunteer anymore info then is needed. i personally practice my right to remain silent, do not say anything unless needed, will not allow searches of my person, vehicle or property. if there is no probable cause the police can not search. always learn your rights.

Gates already knew "the chief"

that's happened to me as well...

Beer time!

What kind of beer should Obama have with his buddy, Gates and Sgt. Crowley?

Pabst Blue Ribbon?

Budweiser?

Miller?

Sapporo?

Other???

There is a VERY blurry line at what point a cop should arrest someone when they are being disorderly.

"Oh geez fine."
"Oh come on!!!!"
"Dont you have ANYTHING better to do?"
"You're such an a**hole."
"F*** you!!!"
"I'm gonna bust a cap in your a**!!"
"If you dont leave me alone, I will break your neck."

At what point should the cop arrest the man?

What happens if she didn't believe him and suspected that he may be hiding something? What if she searched him and his car just because she had a hunch? What if she called to check his license, his registration, his tag, etc. Is that wrong?

What if he started getting angry about all this waiting and these extra measures? Is it okay to arrest him?

Wouldn't you start thinking... "is it because my brother is Mexican...? Because I doubt this would happen if he was white...." ?

Honestly, I prefer the cops doing things by the book and doing the extra steps (within reason) rather than being bums. I just hope they treat em all the same.

the boldface. as soon as a person gets abusive.

I'd just take the ticket and start cussing once he left. cheaper to deal with a ticket than an arrest. you can fight a ticket in court if it was unfair.

on a side note:
a MI cop was caught and termainated for giving out unnessary tickets. it would give them out so the people would go to court and fight it while he collected overtime.... (read about it in a motorcycle magazine months ago)

If she doesn't believe him, and makes decision to go ahead and search his car. Cops normally ask for licenses and registrations first. It is a routine procedure. Actually, his car had been searched before, because he had a record, plenty of speeding tickets under his belt ( I don't count it anymore). He is notorious for high speeding driving. He used to be involved with the Honda clubs, attended the car racing conventions, and even participated in racing his car legally in Long Beach, CA. He spent thousands of dollars on his car. A few times, he managed to lie to cops to avoid tickets and warnings. He even had a cop radar detector in his car.

He went to traffic school several times, and ended up going to a court. He was forced to pay his insurance triple time for several years. He finally had learned his lesson. He used to be a client of my insurance company. I had to sign the contract, so my brother was forbidden to drive my car permanently. He has a clean record now. He has a few friends that are cops. He even took criminal justice classes, and is a top hand gun shooter in the class.

My brother is half German, and never had any experiences (racial profiling) with cops YET. Thanks goodness. He has dark skinned, and is 6' feet. He looks sort of Italian or Spanish. He even considered becoming a cop, but instead he works in the lab.

We do know what racism is. I had a Jewish professor(She teaches English) ignoring me after I wrote my 8-page report about my mother being a refugee, my grandfather being in the German air force, and was a former POW during the WW 2. When my mom moved to LA, and it was not easy being a German. They even threw rocks at her. My Prussian-born grandmother is crazy, and does not like the idea of my mother marrying my Mexican-born dad.

I used to date Mexican guys, and they all complained about white gringos stealin' Mexican girls from them.

My brother's brother in law is black, and he is a great guy. I definitely am sure he thinks Gates overreacted.

Honestly, I prefer the cops doing things by the book and doing the extra steps (within reason) rather than being bums. I just hope they treat em all the same.

Same here.

I cant believe how much focus the media is putting on this whole thing. For whatever is worth, I hope this will be a lesson learned from everyone...for those not to put up a fight with a cop, for a cop not to do racial profiling, and for the president to just make objective statements about any situation that doesnt involve him.

I've read both sides to everyone's opinions and I do not think anyone is wrong either. There are two sides to every story, Gates and the officer, and comparing both sides to the story--- who knows who's telling the truth... :dunno:

This whole story was one big misunderstanding...Gates thought that officer Crowley was being racist because the officer immediately asked Gates to step outside without knowing why the officer is asking Gates to step outside, until Gates asked Crowley why he was there then Crowley said he was responding to a 911 call about a breaking and entering at this address. But then Gates had told the officer that he lives here, and the officer asked him for an identification, then once again Gates was thinking that the officer was being a racist, because he might felt that Crowley didn't believed him because he was black. You just got to understand Gates frame of mind without passing judgments.

this entire fiasco could have easily avoided. simply by remaining calm and cooperating with the police officer.
it is totally screwed up.

I agree that it's terrible, but... who's fault would that be? Officer Crowley. He shouldn't had lied in the police report. :hmm:

I've had a problem with one officer in my hometown when I called in to report a man throwing bricks to my vehicle, and the officer came over and filled out the report, then a few days later, I dropped by the police department to get a copy of the police report and to find out if they had found him or had made any arrested. A detective had informed me that the report was never filed. Who knows what ever happened to that report. I had to fill out the report again.
