Cochlear recalls Nucleus CI500

Excellent.. Who here has raised deaf children that grew up hearing with CI??

Wouldn't you rather hear straight from the horse's mouth itself which would be adults who grew up with CIs?

Exactly my point. You have no qualifications since this is your first time raising a deaf child. So are a lot of parents you come in contact with. 99% of people you talk to only has raised a deaf child, not two, not three. Nearly none of the parents are deaf as well. So hardly any of them would know squat about how to raise a deaf child, they rely on some so-called professionals and support groups, which none of them are experts in the field of parenting.

However, I am deaf, you are not. Big difference.
We are not raising a deaf child that cannot hear, we are raising a deaf child that can hear...

Who in this messageboard has experience with that..?? NOT you..
But I'll gladly listen to your input as a deaf person that cannot hear...

Me? I can hear, I wear a hearing aid. Therefore, I can hear. By the way, you're still raising a deaf child... for the first time.

Food for thought....

The following 2 statements are assumed true:

1) A Deaf person can't "relate" to a deaf person with a CI because the latter can "hear".

2) All parents agree that their CI kids, while being able to hear well, cannot hear perfectly nor as well as a hearing person.

Fine.

What about listening to those who are hard of hearing? They still CAN hear well and even talk on the phone. Just like the CI kids, right?

What say you, HOH folks?

Yes, you already made that clear... in action and words...

who here grew up as deaf children with CI/HA? me! me! me!
So... nothing about raising a deaf child that can hear...
Could you understand conversation with your HAs? Telephone, whispering, conversations between different rooms?

So that makes you more qualified and experienced than deaf people who can hear especially your own child when she becomes an adult?

Could you understand conversation with your HAs?
yes. I'm guessing you still think you're more experienced and qualified than me?

Telephone,
no

whispering,
no

conversations between different rooms?
what's that???

It sounds to me that there's a grey zone between "I'm deaf" and "I can hear"... Deaf can mean that you can still hear. Hear with HA's can mean that you pick up sounds but cannot understand speech..
Where are you?

By the way, you're still raising a deaf child (that can hear - added by cloggy)... for the first time.
Uhh.. and why are you repeating the obvious and already confirmed..??

there's no grey zone. Take away all technology.... what do you get? deaf people!

Include all these wonderful technology... what do you get? still deaf people!

If you think otherwise... well there you go. a big problem beginning with you.

I can hear ...

Just like Banjo said. I can hear with my HAs.

Another "No"
why don't I answer this question for you? Even my audiologist nor doctor wouldn't assume to answer this question.

Just to make sure we are on the same sign...
Qualified for what?

Qualified..... as in you know what it's like to be deaf - culturally, socially, and medically.

The question is.... How much do deaf people hear?

It all comes back to the same age-old question. If we can't hear enough, can we function?

Wow, I must be supernatural in that I can breathe, eat, sleep, work, drive a car, have family, friends, text, surf the internet. Same as ANYBODY else. My deafness has never stopped me from doing anything I want to do. NOTHING.

:dunno:

AH... NO.. we're on a different page...
So you changed the subject.... Ah, well, good think I asked you..

Answer for this new question is "no"..
So.. I don't know what it means to be deaf - culturally, socially, and medically.
You don't know about raising a deaf child that can hear, use the telephone, whisper, shouts from the toilet and understands the answer....

But really... we already knew that...
