A friend of mine, he can hear of his own urine and also next the door farts and urine. It is disgusted to hearing other people's fart and urine splash in the toilet. Ewwww..... I prefer Deaf as peace in my ears.

Have you hear other people's fart and burp?

Everyone farts. Everyone burps. That's life. We make sounds through our orifices. It's the smell that makes us Deafies enjoy it too. You know the old joke, "Why does fart smell? Because deaf people can enjoy it too." That's why little kids laugh because it's funny.

Have you heard birds singing? Have you heard a 6 year old singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and cried? Have you heard a baby babbling? Have you heard the rainfall. Have you heard the water crashing among the shores? Those sounds I care about.

I find it puzzling when there is such a beautiful symphony of sounds to be enjoyed in this world, that you only focus on the negatives. It must be hard going through life always seeing the glass as half empty.

Likewise, there is a beuatiful display of sights to be seen. I don't see that Kalista is focusing on the negatives, as she is focusing on the inherent strengths of the deaf. To focus on what is absent, however, in this case, hearing, is to see the glass as half empty. The key is to see the glass as full, whether hearing is present or not.

Couldnt agree with u more on that. There is nothing more I can add cuz u said it all.

It is up to people who want to view deafness as something being absent or deafness as a blessing. Whatever suits them as long as everyone is happy.

I agree we are all different. What bothers me is that, in some circles of deafies, the push for conformity makes things ugly because it's an impossibility as the culture's too diverse.

Could not agree with you more Neecy but these are the same people who constantly predict (and I bet secretly wish) doom and gloom for those who chose a different path from them. And they wonder why people avoid them like the plague!

I agree

"Oral Method is worthless and waste alot of our time" - Now that's a huge insult to Jackie and other oralists. While I don't agree with the philosophy of oral-only education, I do not make statements that it's a waste of "our" time.

Revise !

Whoever who grew up in oral method, they and I choice ASL because it is our true language.

Whatever all you want to whine about our perspective.

It is sad, you have so much missing of beautiful ASL language.

According to the hearing aids find too annoying me so much. I can't stand to hearing the phone ring all the day next to my desk. Heard colleagues giggle and laugh. The cars constantly blow the honk. I prefer to keep my hearing quiet and more focus on my work and mental funcional stable. ;)

We have different opinion and happy for who we are. You choice hearing aid or cochlear implant, the sounds will make you happy. Those devices will not make me happy. I born profoundly Deaf, God make me healthy pure female. I should be thankful God. Why should I let man made device inside my body? Deaf is not emergency medical reason.

You are right we all have a different opinion why can you not accept what you say. Saying oral education is a waste of time is not accepting and respecting that everybody has a different opinion.

Sorry..that's how I feel about oral education. It was a waste of my time and that is my opinion. I am not going to lie and pretend that it was all that cracked up for me just to make others happy or make others feel respected. It was definitely a waste of my time and education. Too many years lost on having the primary focus of keeping communication effective and working. The purpose of making me oral only was to make me "normal" but instead, it just did the total opposite.

Right. That is the same as saying your years of experience don't have any validity.

Also, why is it that for some of us who feel that way about oral deaf ed is an automatic disrespect for u? That doesnt make sense cuz we are entitled to our opinions of certain programs.

You have talked about respecting the deaf experience and that we oral parents do not show respect for what deaf people have gone through. If you want respect you must show respect first. I treat you as you treat me.

So then is OK for me to say that there is no use for sign language or any education that involves sign language is not good or sucks, is that OK and I am not saying that but many people here have said that oral education is a waste of time.

Not quite. You get treated in direct relation to the way that you have treated others. You create a self fulfilling prophecy for yourself.

No, it is not okay because you are not deaf and have not lived the deaf experience. Therefore, you cannot tell a deaf adult what is best for them. They are autonomous human beings capable of determining that for themselves. Deaf people have said that their oral educational experience was, to them, a waste of time. It is unbelieveably arrogant of you to take their personal experience and try to turn it into something about you. It has nothing to do with you. It is their experience and it is valid.

Wow! Oral deaf education was a big waste of my time growing up and u or others cant change that. I dont trust oral deaf ed due to my own personal experience, my friend's experiences and my professional experiences with it. It has nothing to do with u but if u want to take it personal, your decision. I am not going to be held accountable for how u react to posts.

I can respect the fact that there are many deaf individuals who absolutely hated having an oral upbringing and resent that and resent their parents/teachers/whomever. There are also many oral successes - I went to college (RIT) with many of them, and they were happy with the education they received and their oral background. How do we find a middle ground? There are some deaf who only want ASL education. There are some who prefer oral. Some want both....I don't think that any ONE is the right way nor any ONE the wrong way....I think that parents need to experiment and find out just which route suits their children the best. And if it happens to be an oral-only route, to accept that.

I respect your views. I am just concerned that while parents are experimenting different programs before finding one, years have been lost on language development and education for the deaf children. I feel that way cuz I see it happening too often. U dont have to agree with it but that is why I feel that giving the children all the tools from the beginning is the best way to go as opposed to trying one tool at a time to see which one works the best for them.

I agree. Rather than experimenting with first this, and then taht, it is much safer to provide all tools for the child, and then let go of those that are not useful, rather than attempting to add. It is far more proactive.
