I think Jiro's post was directed towards the issues with the subway crimes and the eventual outcome of it.

That isn't what I'm talking about.

I believe we are discussing all crimes in NYC here?

I guess you will have to ask Jiro to explain his post.

His doesn't need explaining, I have read and can read it without issues. The one thing I like about Jiro's posts is that even if he has an opinion, he backs it up with sources of some kind. He is also accepting to new ideas and thoughts presented in decent manner instead of shooting everything down. That's standard "constructive" debating 101.

What I have trouble grasping is the penchant that there are other factors involved with NYC crime rate and they aren't being explained in this thread. I have stated this over for the past 5 posts or something and there is still not a resolve in sight to show for it.

Oh well....... :). You can always google. It's not necessary for me to ascribe to a counter theory in order to claim a theory is opinion and not fact.

:( Come on golf man, I thought you can do better than that. Teamwork is what it is about to fixing issues. Not arm crossing and blaming games.

It's a relief when there is at least one person in AD who refuses to back up a claim or assertion with any kinds of sources, links or otherwise when asked for. No. It's not Jiro.

Oh BTW a backed up opinion is still just an opinion until it is proves to be fact.

:hmm: Nothing to fix here. I have always said he was entitled to his opinion.

Are you saying you don't know????

Simple question.....was it Kelling? or was it a number of factors?
do you have any other source that says otherwise?

Or is it unclear.......An educated person would never base their opinion on a few results.

In 1996 my team played in 17 tournaments. I played in 12 of those. We won the 12 I played in but didn't win any that I missed. Did we win because of my play? Did we win because my presence helped chemistry? OR Did we win because the other teams were missing key players at the same time? Was it a combinations of all of these things?

-OR- is the answer unclear???

In the above example you have 17 results......

Sorry but arguing results of a theory as fact with limited samples and uncontrolled/unknown variables is ........fallacious
oh here's the result of Kelling's theory - NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, LA, and Detroit's working on it.

fallacious? I think not.

So far you have a working theory, Jiro. Hmmmm.

do you have any other source that says otherwise?

4 results.....mine had 17

Oh and BTW.....Thx for the lesson in theories.....

My theory.....don't have one. Theories I believe led to the decline..... :dunno: I think it's unclear what led to the decrease.

My belief......more than just conflict theory contributed to the decrease. Since the above poster made his claim of fact rather than belief the onus is on him to prove, not on me to disprove. As I showed with the softball example....results do not necessarily prove the theory. You would have to disprove other variables had an influence. In this case you would have to explain why many other cities and countries also saw a decline in crime during that time. You would also have to prove that other approaches applied during the same time did not contribute to the decrease. While perhaps no other sociological approach was attempted....that does not negate that police often change their strategies. You would have to prove outside forces (say media) did not contribute to the decline. Until you do that all you have is theory which is open to opinion. Not fact. And that is what this debate has been about.

Let me make it simple for you -

I was very specific. I used a specific source for specific area. Kelling's theory was used only in NYC. It has produced a positive result. As for other cities and countries that showed a decline in crime.... well they did not use Kelling's theory. I've already showed you 2 pages ago that Kelling's theory did not work in Chicago.

hhmm... comparing 4 major cities with.. 17 softball games....

I recall that you mentioned that you're looking into going to school to learn more, yes? come back when you're finished :)

Hole in one!!

Watch out for TXgolfer's deadly line drive.

Just for saying "Fore!!"?
That is just from this thread alone. I have no worries, but you DID call Naisho out for discussing theories. If I wanted to, I could line up perhaps 40 more examples from the "Current Events" section. Here is an insightful quote:

They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, "All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!"

:hmm: are you saying you are unaware of anyone disagreeing with Kelling?

I see that you haven't been paying attention. I've already posted the dissenting research 2 pages ago.

so I'm still waiting. who?
