but a better question is - do you believe our current state of sustainability is fine?

No. We're going bankrupt. I don't know if we're going to start acting like adults and live within our means or end up defaulting. I really really hope it's the former.

It works fine on a small scale, but in a large complex society, it's simply impossible. Currency and markets are necessary to ensure efficient allocation of resources.

Not impossible...but improbable, especially given the U.S.'s fixation on individualistic concerns over collectivistic concerns and materialism. The very things which create greater stratification in society. Once extreme stratification is achieved, it is extremely difficult to revert to a lesser stratified society.
