I have been doing some looking up on Marxism and I think I have come up with an idea of it. Lets say WW3 breaks out and all of society falls. We have to fight for our survival (food, shelter, ect). If a group of people were to work together to survive with each person having a job or jobs to do would that be a Marxist group? There is no money involved and no classes for the people to fall into. Or is that to simple of an explaination?

Actually, Andy, that is a very reasonable explanation of pure Marxism. Congratulations!

Hasn't anybody read Animal Farm by George Orwell?

But would they stick with it as they grew up? Thats why I said the moon. It would be kind of hard to keep them locked in a room for decades.

If this experment were to be possible I would be very interested in the results.

This went from Beck to isolating and locking up very young kids into rooms to see if they'll beat each other up and whether Marxism works. LOL It's kind of like Lord of the Flies or Animal Farm all over again but they had to get shelter and food to survive. Of course, a fiction.

No one stated anything about locking kids up to see if they'll beat each other up. Really, kokonut, your constant attempts to derail a productive discussion and sharing of ideas is becoming quite annoying. Perhaps your remarks would be better suited to one of your "It's Obama's fault" threads. They don't require any deep thought or ability to think creatively. Continue with your childish attempts to derail this thread, however, and your trolling will be reported.cool2:

Animal Farm is actually a well respected treatise on sociological concepts. Of course, one has to be able to actually see below the surface and make abstract connections to understand that. Those that dismiss it's relevance obviously are not capable of such creative thought processes. They simply find it easier to dismiss than to learn and discuss with intelligence.

simply look at real life cases like WW2 - Europe and Japan. also Iraq & Afghanistan (9/11), South Korea (Korean War), and America (during Great Depression).

oh and those towns ravished by flood - Fargo, ND... Oakville, IA...

Yep. We see glimpses of it all the time, particularly following disasters. But people simply don't recognize the action as adhering to some of the Marxist principles because they have been brainwashed to believe "Marxism bad!" They truly don't know what pure Marxism is.

I personally don't believe that Marxism is "bad". Only that it will end badly. Pure Marxism might be a great thing, but I don't think it is possible long term. Eventually, IMO, classes will still form. Might be based on Race, strength, knowledge, looks, abilities, religion or any number of other things. It's hard to say what might emerge as being important.....but once something did a class system would form (again my opinion). The haves will be happy and the have nots will not.

I don't think it's possible to have a pure form of any government.

Some stratification in society is universal. However, there are those societies that are far less stratified than others. The U.S. happens to be one of the most stratified.

:hmm: Well then to me Marxism is the perfect way to live in a tribal society. But I am having trouble seeing how it could work in a materialistic society.

If I had it my way I would live in a tribe much like the native americans did, so I guess I have to say I would support Marxism in that sense.

Well, over time, a Marxist society would simply become more collectivistic and less materialistic. And I can't say that would be a change for the worse. Look at the ills this society deal with as a result of materialistic attitudes.

It works fine on a small scale, but in a large complex society, it's simply impossible. Currency and markets are necessary to ensure efficient allocation of resources.

every civilization goes thru different phases as it grows. Our present state is nearing its limit. I only hope we can adapt and move onto new phase.

So what do you think our next phase is that we'll have to adapt to?

wish I knew. nobody does.

but a better question is - do you believe our current state of sustainability is fine?
