Censorship

thank you. there we go. :mad2: My opinion still stands - I DO SUPPORT CENSORSHIP cuz people's too stupid to handle it. :mad2:

I totally agree!
Not only people stupid but they easily P A N I C,
that is the main reason why they cant tell the public
everything that would scare people.

Censorship I must admit is a foreign concept for me because I live in Canada and we very rarely censor.

I know this doesn't relate to the topic, on TV, I see vulgar language all the time. "F*ck!" is on TV all the time however it cannot be shown from 6 am to 9 pm.

There's softcore & gay porn that is shown on TV and it's part of the public broadcasting channels. It's known as "Kink" but the K is backwards.

In one instance the Canadian government did have to step in and do total censorship of the CRTC, newspapers and broadcasting. It was during the Homolka- Bernardo case as there were gruesome details about the case the lawyers did not want the public to know until they selected all the potential jurors.

Canadians simply went across the border to get all the information. Anyone who brought any related materials from USA to Canada would be arrested.

This is why censorship is pretty foreign to me.

Heh heh, Aghori did have culture shock at first when he moved here because it was different but the good kind of different, you know. :)

yea thanks!! thats the perfect person that i can ask him for his expereinces much later. that is going to be interesting for me. :D

You may want to be aware of this if you're not already: B.C. tribunal hears complaint against Maclean's article

The Canadian Human Rights Commission and the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal both dismissed the complaints, likely from public pressure. Still, the fact that this even occurred should be a cause for concern. After all, the very threat of being dragged in front of a human rights commission just for writing an article critical of a religion is not conducive to free speech.

Yes, thank you for reminding me about that.

Anything you write online, publish or broadcast can be held against you. You are liable for what you do/say. It is a sticky situation because you do need to be careful about what you say about a group of people based on their gender, sex, orientation, race, religion, ethnicity.

:eek3:

Canadian Human Rights Act

The purpose of this Act is to extend the laws in Canada to give effect, within the purview of matters coming within the legislative authority of Parliament, to the principle that all individuals should have an opportunity equal with other individuals to make for themselves the lives that they are able and wish to have and to have their needs accommodated, consistent with their duties and obligations as members of society, without being hindered in or prevented from doing so by discriminatory practices based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, disability or conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted.

Canadian Human Rights Commission

The Canadian Human Rights Commission administers the Canadian Human Rights Act and is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Employment Equity Act. Both laws ensure that the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination are followed in all areas of federal jurisdiction.

In the court of public opinion, yes, that's true. However, it should concern citizens when the government gets involved in deciding which opinions are appropriate to express and which are not. After all, you never know when the balance of power may shift and your opinions are deemed unacceptable.

Censorship left us high amount of curiosity.

When I was in high school, I recall government of Cincinnati attempt to censor the photographs which created by late Robert Mapplethorpe. It caused me got curious and went there then I see why the government tried to censor the controversy arts.

Censorship is something the government aren't prepared for.

I remember that vividly!

Exceptions to freedom of speech in America (these are off the top of my head, so I may be missing some):

- You cannot yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater unless there is a fire.
- No speech that presents a "clear and present danger".
- No false advertising.
- You cannot divulge classified information.
- You cannot commit perjury.
- Defamation, libel, and slander are not protected.
- Obscene material has limited protection. Child pornography has no protection.
- The government may make reasonable restrictions on time, place, and manner of speech.

Other than that, you may say anything that is enlightening, inspiring, noble, intelligent, humble, truthful, stupid, worthless, hateful, bigoted, arrogant, offensive, etc.

In regards to perjury--that applies when you are testifying under oath in the court of law.

As for this topic and Liebling's link--it's a good discussion but it's too broad. If you can narrow it down--then it would be worth discussing indepth.

If you look at that link in first post - you can see where it's going. a government censorship of government secret (UFO, torture, wars, etc.)

I did and again--there are a variety of topics of censorship that incorporates it all.

If it was a little more specific--then it would be worthwhile. In the meantime--it's a generalzation of censorship topics.........

Which thou do we talk about under censorship?

By definition, that's true.

I agree. That site bounces back and forth on a whole range of topics. When I think about censorship, I think about government censorship. I don't really care if a private entity like Wikipedia engages in censorship like that website complains about. I also don't care about the conspiracy theories like "9/11 truth" or the "CIA controls all the media" silliness.

Ignorance is far more scary to me than the truth.

The truth always comes out.

I have to agree with Mistyrose on this one. My older brother was a high level intelligence officer in the Air Force from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. There are things that the public does not need to know about. When people are going to work every day, going shopping, taking their kids to baseball practice, etc. they don't need their minds burdened with all the things the intelligence community knows about. He has seen a number of people come in with a more liberal mindset and have their world view changed almost instantly. "Man, I never knew the world was really like this" is a phrase he heard numerous times.

And the truth doesn't always come out. There is still information kept classified going back decades, even centuries.

you speak of cold hard truth. it's better to feed them rumors than truth.
