When I grew up, we did not have ethnic studies, we had social studies. The entire class, not just whites, not just blacks, not just Latinos , not just Asian, etc. but ALL of us, were taught about MLK and his contributions to America....
When I was in school, MLK wasn't history, he was current events.

probably not a dedicated class for German language (meaning - that same class is used for other subject). Typical in college.

I do recall in my high school - we did have something like that in video. Same for French, German, Italian classes.
In my high schools, the foreign language classes usually had travel posters and such decorating the rooms.

We also had American flags, to which we pledged each morning.

To me it is all about how MLK and other subjects are taught.

A few years ago my friend's 1st grade daughter brought home a coloring book that the teacher had made. The title was "MLK was a good man because he..." And each page started with those words and then added something that MLK did with a picture to color. That's indoctrination.....very wrong. If they want to teach the facts......what MLK did.....that's fine. But to repeat over and over that MLK is good, or anyone for that matter, is not right.

2 words for you - home schooling

there you go. same here. the video only showed one wall, not the entire room. this doesn't mean it's promoting the overthrow of the US government, resentment toward a race or class of people, advocation ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individual, and is available to only pupils of a particular ethnic group.

I love how they're using neutral language because the only dominant ethnic group in Arizona is Hispanic people :giggle:

Oh gee.

Well, it's only indoctrination if the students are not allow to question or criticize it.

I agree .... most indoctrination is done at the College level.

I dare you to question feminism in a class being taught by a feminist (in fact, I double dog dare you) :D

Most 1st graders are not going to question their teacher. The point is you can teach about MLK without saying "MLK was a good man". Why not state the facts and let children decide for themselves. Seems like a good way to develop critical thinking........

The same goes for every historical figure......good or bad.

Hmm... I just don't see the big deal in it. They'll learn more as they age.

Although I personally consider MLK to be a hero, there were a lot of "bad" things he did that are never talked about and children go into their adult lives not knowing.

Like how he was an adulterer, isn't that right?

I **may** have a great example of how indoctrination works in our public school systems. How is the Civil War taught in Northern Schools vs. those of the South?

Does the race of the teacher have a factor in how it is taught?

Is Robert E. Lee vilified in Northern Schools?

Are southerners vilified?

If not then that particular class is legal......

Seems fair enough

Yep, exactly why I say teach the facts and let people decide for themselves.

Teach kids to think then let them think.

Note......I helped my friend take it before the school board. They agreed with us.

So ... you are FOR indoctrination?

would you say military boot camps, police academy, FBI Quantico, medical schools, etc. are part of "indoctrination" programs?
