About CI...

Hi Smiley,

You do sound a bit disappointed but I do think it's good that your doctor is trying out all the options and being very thorough before allowing you to go to the CI surgery. We get told so often that hearing and CI doctors are only interested in making a quick buck and yet I see with you, Fragmenter and others that caution is being applied.

It's not easy for you though having to go through all the dizzy spells and then waiting to see if it will improve. Waiting is hard! I hope the short term solutions do have some impact though. Hugs.

Yes I am disappointed. You are right that my dr is not looking for bucks but being cautious and want the best for me before doing ci at last resort. I guess I got good doctor. :)

Yes it is annoying to have the spells and be fine one day and next stuck in bed for 2 to 3 days. :( But its much improvement as i used to have spells daily and now? its much less as i get 5 spells a month. so thats better than before! But my hearing still is kinda like under water and using strong one so wait n see how it goes! :) I will let you know of course.

Thanks.

my follow up care should be real soon as i will need refills on the medications for Meniere's disease.. and also i never heard back from them about the digital hearing aid.. as i couldnt hear NOTHING with that digital hearing aid after that incident that day when TJ was in bathroom having a bath.. and mom said TJ was yelling for me?? I didnt hear?? i was kinda upset..

so after that day.. i went back to my analog so i COULD hear.. i find this funny..cuz making me think they are doing this on purpose so i could get CI?? could be this case?? hmm what u think?? i never wore the digital hearing aid ever since.. im still wearing the analog one.. it works.. i could HEAR.. jeez.. this really sucks...

my sons father asked me few days ago if i am determined to get CI.. i told him.. i dont know.. cuz digital hearing aid doesnt work for me.. yet analog still work for me.. so what good will that do for me?? i rather wait till my hearing go.. then i will go for ci.. i still can hear.. and the medications really helped alots not to get my hearing distorted .. for now...

and i just had hernia surgery not long ago.. i dont want another surgery cuz i got real sick all day .. nauseated and feeling real bad.. my site where they cut still is sore.. so i dont think i will have another surgery for a good while.. ha.. :)

for now i will let yall know how it goes at the follow up care and see what the audiologist say about the digital hearing aid...

Gingerbread,

That must have been a frustrating and frightening experience not to be able to hear T.J.

I've had similar experiences as you when it comes to digital HAs. They didn't provide enough amplification and made speech sound very distorted. I had much better success with analogs.

Given what you've been through with your hernia surgery, I don't blame you for not wanting to go through another surgery. In addition, as long as you are able to hear with your analog HAs, there is no need to rush into getting a CI.

Please keep us posted on your follow-up treatment and next appointment with your audiologist. :)

yeah the day at the ent office-i kept telling them that it sound like a LOUD SPEAKER.. BOOm and air blowing in your ear.. thats what it sound like.. they said it will be fine? i was like whatever.. i turned the sound down.. that explains why?? they told me its so i wont be able to hear the environment sounds and only hear the voices.. but i do want to hear EVERYTHING so i can hear what is going on?? it doesnt make sense to me.. jeez..

Thank you Hear again.. yeah i think i will stick with my analog for now.. :)

Good to hear from you Gingerbread and glad you have found something that works for you with Analogue hearing aids. Before I lost my hearing I too preferred analogues over digitals.

The reason why audiologists are pushing more for digitals is because today analogues are near obsolete. I bought an analogue hearing aid 3 years ago and I cannot get it repaired by Phonak today because they have stopped making them. It was hard work even back then to find an analogue hearing aid to buy, which in hindsight was a waste of money as I suddenly lost my hearing not long after that.

It seems that digitals are actually better hearing aids but SteveAud on this board mentioned that for those of us who have had analogues for more than 10 years the adjustment to digital is quite difficult, since our brain are used to analogue sounds and cannot process the softer digital sounds.

There is no rush to get a CI. If the hearing aid is doing its job for now then stick with that :)

That is interesting..that it is hard to process if i am used to analog for over 10 yrs.. wow.. no wonder it didnt work for me.. :( anyway if my hearing aid broke then what am i going to do? ahhh i think i will go insane! lol.. jeez.. haha..

Ginger,I was a long term analog aid user for 17.5 years,as well. My brain was used to analog sounds but I didn't hesitate to switch to digitals .. My audi programmed my new digital aids. It was not 'powerful' like as I was used to in analog.. but now,I'm getting used to both bilateral hearing aid and digital ( compressed) sounds..I think I need some more time but I can say that I can now hear and understand speech better than as I did with analogs.. and yes, digitals do not amplify every sound ,they focus on speech and I find it to be more helpful ... for example,I can now communicate with my friend in a noisy car better than before.. In addition, digital sound has much less distortion than analog .. so I never wanted to go back to analog.

One more point is that I still have speech understanding problems due to my highly damaged hearing (cochlea) system. My aids offers enough power but this isn't efficient enough for me :( so I'm thinking of getting an implant in a few years .. but I will wait for my brain to get used to bilateral hearing and digital sound.. I may have a review of my hearing six months later .

I never had analogs as its only been 7 yrs since loosing my hearing. So I tried on friends analog and was like WHOA! this is freak weird.....just not used to that type of amplification across all frequency I guess.....So I believe too that it would be difficult to get used to digitals if wear analog HA's for long time.

As far as the no sodium thing in diet for meniere's disease, it is with sodium intake, body retains water.....because where sodium goes it brings along with it water.....this is speaking extravascularly too. So in ear and cochlea where disturbance from menieres occurs limiting sodium intake concurrently with diuretic agents....maxide, diazide, spironolactone, furosemide....etc, will help extravascular fluid (fluid outside bloodstream)transfer into bloodstream and exit via kidneys via way of loop of henle. Often times these diuretics can cause other electrolyte imbalance so many people on diuretics take Potassium d/t being lost as result of "loop diuretics".

Diuretics are used to help with a number of diseases like congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, cirrhosis of liver and liver failure, chronic edema, increased intercranial pressure, edema associated with chronic renal failure, and even for acute renal failure.

Sometimes you just have to go through the whole range of digitals to find something that works for you. I am currently trialling digital hearing aids for my unimplanted ear. The last aid was pathetic and I knew right away that it wasn't for me but I have a Phonak Supero one currently on trial that doesn't sound too bad. It's not super clear but I do like the power.
