Des Moines, Iowa....can see the whole metro area on this map.

Seattle, WA....can only see Seattle and the Eastside....the metro area is too big to fit on the map at the same zoom level as Des Moines.

I know it's apples and oranges comparsion but it's a huge difference and a culture shock.

Des Moines has about 600,000 in metro area
Seattle has about 3,400,000 in metro area

I just learned there is a little airport above I80 in Des Moines. And you mean I would have culture shock? :hmm:

I lived lots of places knowing mostly just my own family. Weather is the most important thing.

And now I can just transport you all with me.

 Yes, Rush hour traffic, very diverse, less obese people, more different choices of retail stores and many more. Of course the weather in Seattle is temperate forest type. Not too cold and not too hot.

Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill feels sort of like New York City in a way.

Rush hour traffic... bad.

Obese people.. Cost of living is so high, maybe I can't afford so much food. Iowa does have cheap food.

Mostly shop online...

No, I am ready and I can go there!

That's because there are lot of outdoor opportunities and lot of sidewalks in suburbs and plus plenty of bus service. That's why the people in Seattle area are less likely to be obese compared to Iowa. Yes, food can be a little expensive in Seattle area, but there's always Grocery Outlet! It's VERY CHEAP!

I have not seen rush hour traffic since I moved here.

From 3 to 5, cars on the I235 freeway in Des Moines, just sits there. If we are out at that time, I encourage my husband to take the long way by city streets.

So I guess we have a mini version of rush hour here. Side streets get you where you want to go.

No rush hour traffic here in Waterloo/Cedar Falls. Never had the opportunity to sit in traffic. I did end up in rush hour traffic in Omaha when I was visiting there last year.

Seattle's rush hour is much worse than Des Moines. rush hour can last from 2 to 7 pm in some of the very congested spots. They have been restless widening and improving highways in Seattle area.

Most busiest section of the highway in Des Moines is near downtown on I-235 which carries average of 125,000 vehicles a day. That's the busiest road in Iowa. in Seattle, between Downtown and University District with almost 300,000 vehicles a day.

Ah... I thought you meant you had never seen rush hour traffic in the Midwest.

Got it. And now I plan to stay home between 2 and 7 if I go to Seattle.

Lot of people have jobs so it's not much of a choice for them. It took me about 45 minutes to get home from work to home on average. Now, it only takes less than 10 minutes.

But by the time I go there, it will be retirement living, which means we will have time for everything.

There are other places out there that may not be so busy, I should probably start research.

But they do need restaurants and interesting food stores. And good bus service.

You meant Des Moines? It's funny that Iowa is older state than Washington state, yet retail build new stores here later than in WA in many cases. Seattle has 4 or 5 Trader Joe's while there's only ONE Trader Joe's in Iowa. Well, better late than never. There is no Whole Foods in Iowa while Seattle area has at least 4 or 5 of them.

I lived in El Paso / Juarez area for many years and loved being in a huge metro area.

There were lots of opportunities for interesting experiences in the combined cities.

I did want to retire there, but Juarez is really unsafe now with a serial killer and drug wars.....

You could fit everyone in Des Moines metro area in Seattle city limits and fit everyone from Iowa in the whole metro area with plenty of room to spare. Hint: Seattle has 608,660 in 2010 Census with over 3.4 million in metro area and Iowa only has 3,046,000 in 2010 census.

:hmm: This is hard to think about...

I had already eliminated New York City...

Yeah it is for sure. Capitol Hill in Seattle is the most dense neighborhood in the metro area with over 20,000 people per square mile. You would see endless supply of apartment buildings and many beautiful victorian homes in some spots.
