I have read this thread and find the numbers totally bizarre. Where the heck do they come from???? I have met thousands upon thousands of deaf people and can truly say that the number of those who didn't know or use sign language number less than the fingers on my hands. Am I missing something???

I've always understood that the cultural, ASL-using segment of the whole is a minority. And I think it is because hearing people control destiny....

I think that nearly everyone on this forum advocates for or appreciates the value of ASL. I've not seen many ( if any) oral-only advocates in the past few years.

One key question to ask is why are these 4 out of 5 deaf people NOT using ASL.

So is 4 out of 5 are people not using it, or don't know it? Many deaf won't use it with hearing people.I already met signing deaf who only use speech skills to hearing people (and deaf people who don't know asl well like myself)

Of COURSE they do, but the numbers cannot be right. Where do they get those numbers???

Please cite those numbers with a reference.

Exactly. Which is why I said the more you use it, the more people you find that use it.

My dear Grendel, I wasn't just referring to 'oral only'. Oralism in essence should not be or have been imposed on the deaf at all in my opinion. It's inflicting pain and suffering on a deaf person. As for the ratio of people NOT using sign language is highly due to lack of knowledge that it even exists!
The whole point of my previous post.

yes, they were using their speaking skills with me... but when I turned around, they were signing to their deaf friends.

I'm asking her if they refuse to use it. or they just don't know it.

Dang. Sort of like speaking foreign languages to the hearing at a bus stop. Not good.
Why sign to hearing people when you know they probably are ignorant of it?

she would have to cite me :)

:laugh2: Guess I didn't look back far enough. My bad. But I'm still interested in where the numbers that 4 out of 5 deaf people don't know, or don't use, sign language comes from. I'd like to see how those numbers were arrived at and maybe the reasons for not using sign language.

Ref. PFH's #s a few comments back. You'll have to ask him for source.

Why haven't I learned ASL? I've been too lazy/busy to make the effort (since my hearing, with HAs, is pretty good). I have thought of learning ASL many times, but just haven't put the effort into it yet.

I am late-deafened (first diagnosed in my mid-30's). Have worn HAs for 12 years now. Am severe-to-profound deaf in both ears but have great speech discrimination.

My daughter who is hearing has learned a few words and always signs me Thank You, so I do know one phrase.:)

If I ever do decide to put the effort into learning ASL, I will ask my daughters to do the same. Since they both plan to be in "customer service" type of jobs (nursing & owning a bakery), it would be beneficial to them to learn it. Heck, maybe they'll MAKE me learn it so they can communicate with me when I'm not wearing my HAs which I know is frustrating for them.

Again, my reason for not learning ASL is MY own laziness.

The big thing is ... its not 4/5 deaf people.. its 4/5 people with hearing loss.
the hearing loss spectrum is so wide.

Many of these people don't actually need to be in the "deaf world" to be fine. Many of these people don't even know they have hearing loss - perhaps they do to some degree but do nothing about it..

But if you wanted to know... "DEAF PEOPLE" sure.. I'd say nearly all of them know sign language..

I have to clarify - Hearing Loss :)

I'll get numbers and sources. Its on my other computer that I barely use anymore.
