A Cure

In that post, PFH, we weren't discussing hearing loss as a single entity. We were discussing disabilities as a whole (or I was).

I would tend to agree with you regarding the hearing loss stats, though. I would never question that from anybody; as I'm not versed enough to do so. :)

Alright - If it was in whole... Deafness and blindness tops the total in disabilities. If I remember correctly 36mil for the deaf, and like 20mil for vision impaired..

I just checked AFB website, 25.2 million in the USA with vision impairments.
506,000 under 18.

That is about the same for the hearing impairments. Let's say 850,000 are under the age of 18 has some hearing loss...

36+25.2 million is 61.2 million people, and 1.3 million under the age of 18 has some disabilities just in these two senses.

The other disabilities - mental health, physical disabilities, etc are in a much smaller scope, so I'd have to say overall - less than 10% are from birth.

You're showing more and more of either your lack of literacy skills, or your jaded selective reading.

Estimate is between 500,000 to a million, but we wouldn't know because Census doesn't ask people what their languages are.

I know, i'm not going to bother responding anymore.

Alright, thank you. I couldn't get her to cite stats for me. That's all I wanted. I wasn't trying to be a snot. My knowledge base is just limited to what I know and it seemed rather small to me, but I'm always willing to admit to being wrong, so there you go. I was wrong. :)

As noted before having a Cochlear Implant DOESN'T CURE DEAFNESS! Real easy to prove disconnect the Implant-real quiet-- Deafness! At least MY experience-every time I go swimming.

Wow, such a revelation! I would never have known!

Shh!! I believe he is being shunned until he participates sensibly!

Yeah, I know; I don't remember seeing a sarcasm smilie here......do you know which one comes the closest?

Of course. Always ask an autistic person for help with that.

Thank you PFH!
The pediatric disabilty communities are sizable, but they don't make up the majority of the disabled population. Just as with blindness/low vision and hearing loss, most PDs are aquirred. The blindness and PD communities could have been larger in the old days b/c of medical practices that are no longer done. (ie giving too much oxygen to babies which would then cause them to go blind)

Used to be many more deaf people in the past, but we have vaccines now. there are only a few few non-genetic diseases that can cause deafness exist today. One of the I can think of is meningitis. The rest is usually due to genetic or
Presbycusis

And reactions to medication like with ototoxic drugs. But then again, I thought the biggest cause of deafness was unknown.
Did you know that there used to be a lot of just blind kids? Now only about 40% are just blind. The rest tend to be multihandicapped. Which is why you see mostly multihandicapped kids at Blind schools.

To answer the question posed re: how is deafness "handled" now: one way, if suitable, use a Hearing Aids, next use a Cochlear Implant or Use ASL only. Worst answer- do: Nothing.

I agree. The worst choice is to do nothing. That is the only wrong choice parents can make.

So that is a rather small minority. 1:36-70

Don't spin it with your monolingual bullshit. I can easily use your logic of "minority language' to justify shutting down programs for the First Nations.

Wouldn't the ratio be 1:10 to 1:20, if we are talking about hearing loss population?

He said 36 million and you said 500,000 to 1 million using ASL. That's were I got the numbers.

And there is no reason for foul language and to attack me. I was answering a question posed in the thread.

So now what are you going to argue about in this thread, FJ? You'll argue that there aren't really 36 million ASL users(I assume PFH was not referring to hard core ASL users only) and then once you're done arguing about it, you'll reverse your self and then you'll argue that we're mistaken after all and there really are 36 million ASL users after all after all you know so much better than us benighted folk.

He said there are 36 million people with a hearing loss, but only 500,000 to 1 million use ASL.

Ok, people, now that we've argued excessively over ratios, let's get back to our regularly scheduled topic: Is there a cure?

Nope. Not yet.

End of discussion. :cool2:
