I'm still waiting for the official word that Fukushima has melted down. Where is that again? Oh yeah! It doesn't exist.

Partial meltdown is not a total meltdown.

Partial meltdown is not a total meltdown.

They are assuming it is a total meltdown. The precautions are when they evacuated 3,000 residents.

Now it is 160,000 (???) and distribution of iodine. :eek3:

That isn't a precaution. The evacuation of 3,000 residents was a precaution.

They are "assuming" a meltdown. Why? Because no one can get near it enough to check to be sure. Meh.

Nothing in your quotes said they assumed a TOTAL meltdown.

They said they couldn't be sure, but they were assuming a partial meltdown and were evacuating people for safety.

Distributing quantities of iodine is a precaution to potential exposure.

Administering iodine doses to individuals is treatment for actual exposure.

saywhatkid has summed you up fairly well.

Iodine is not good in large doses, but it is an essential mineral. Many salt companies offer table salt with iodine added. Check the label.

Yep. When I was roaming throughout Nicaragua I would put a drop of iodine into each gallon of drinking water to sterilize it. I never got sick there.

Yes. I recall those pills from my backpacking days also.

I gave up. Fire up the Tiny Tim music...

 Did you know he used to live in Des Moines, and could be seen wandering about the streets occasionally.

Oh, by the way, my husband bought me an LLBean backpack for hiking about the city this spring. It was on sale half price. I think $29. It is a lovely violet color. He added an LED flasher to attach to the strap so hopefully traffic will notice me.

I wouldn't normally brag about my possessions, but I thought they were thoughtful gifts as this is our anniversary month. ;)
