8.9 quake in Japan triggers massive tsunamis

That Faux news report was repeating what a Japanese agency said.

Tsunamis happen all the time. So do earthquakes. Most of the time, nothing happens.

also, that second explosion was a hydrogen explosion. but reading that headline, you'd think that a nuclear explosion just happened and a tsunami was on its way to wreck more havoc.

I didn't get that impression from the article. I took it to read that a second explosion occurred at Fukushima and that yet another earthquake offshore caused the tsunami.

There have been over 220 earthquakes in that region since the big one. Its been upgraded to 9.0

It moved Japan 8 feet and moved the earth's axis 10 inches.

I've been wondering if/how that affects GPS globally.

and yet...there was no tsunami warning. :hmm:

Also, where does it say that the earth's axis shifted ten inches? We don't even know for sure how many feet Japan was "moved" because the water hasn't receded yet.

Your reporting is not to be trusted!

Like mapmaking or driving your car? The first, a pain. Global Positioning Systems are always updating and changing, though. The earth is constantly moving - and I don't mean just spinning.

Well ... no offense, but neither is yours. You are making it appear as if everyone should just bury their head in the sand and there is nothing to worry about.

All I've done is point out the fallacies in some of the news reports. Mentally, I think the world is prepared for the WORST WORST case scenario...but I'm not going to wrap myself in tin foil. Worry is not on my emotional radar, no.

I don't worry either. I just prepare so I don't have to worry. The worst case scenario is always a very real possibility.

I may have grown up in a different era .... the threat of a nuclear annihilation was VERY real when I was growing up. Now, the younger generation is worried more about jihadists instead of EMP and nuke warheads raining down from the sky.

No one suspected a natural disaster could cause 3000 rads to float across the Pacific.

Wait - what good is a fallout shelter now? The effects of major radiation poisoning go long beyond a week or two.

It would make sense to worry more about jihadists falling from the sky...but it makes even more sense to worry about being hit by a drunk driver.

There's a difference between "worry" as in omgomgomg and anxiety (not my thing) and "worry" as in "be prepared for" because you perceive a possible threat. IF the unimaginable and illogical happened and radiation in HARMFUL LEVELS hit the west coast, what am I going to do about it in Denver? What are you going to do about it in D.C.? And if the west coast were in danger, I'm sure we'd be aware.

You Can Stop Worrying About A Radiation Disaster In Japan -- Here's Why

When designing a nuclear power plant, engineers follow a philosophy called “Defense of Depth”. That means that you first build everything to withstand the worst catastrophe you can imagine, and then design the plant in such a way that it can still handle one system failure (that you thought could never happen) after the other. A tsunami taking out all backup power in one swift strike is such a scenario.

I'm confident that they can handle it.

Yeah, we should have been worried about jihadists raining down towers in NYC (yeah, like that is ever gonna happen ... oh .. wait a minute ... )

It wasn't like there was a forewarning then either.

There were naysayers before Katrina hit too. Just saying.

The half-life would be ... 24,000 years. If 3000 rads becomes 1500 rads then becomes 750, by the time the earth has revolved a bit, the rads would reach 0 and dissipate. A fallout shelter, or secure basement, or even a shopping mall - would significantly cut down on exposure.

Fallout shelters were designed to protect people until radiation had dissipated. They were not meant to inhabited for long periods of time.

I am sure they THOUGHT that they could. However, the official word is that Fukushima has melted down. 44 countries are trying to contain it ATM. So ... that means the original engineers did not have the infinite wisdom to foresee a 9.0 earthquake. No one did.

Fukushima has exploded twice. Those are strong indications that a meltdown has occurred and that radiation in large amounts is leaking.

(hint: why are iodine tablets being handed out to residents there? Why were 160,000 people told to evacuate?)

WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Where is the total meltdown information?
Please show me the 44 countries that are trying to contain "it" and what is it?
Scientists have long suspected that Japan would see another "big one".
Fukushima has not exploded! STOP IT. Just because there have been hydrogen explosions at Fukushima does not mean that FUKUSHIMA EXPLODED.
