I think this observation by you, about your MIL, says it all. You can't change or fix the issues she has in herself, only she can do that. The holidays is hardly the time to expect a clearer communication with anyone. Too much going on, too many people and distractions.

everything looks good here....I am south of Dayton but north of Cincy. I see it both ways C-I-N-C-I and C-I-N-N and to throw in the older way still used by older D/deaf - "C" in the forhead area for the C on the Reds ballcap.

The main reason is that you would not know what is correct and what is in error. You would also miss out on learning proper syntax and cultural lessons. I would not try to teach myself to be a Teacher, Surgeon, Nurse ~ same/same with a language that is not your first language.
