If she's going to change, it's going to have to come from within herself and not from an outside force, and that's sad. Hopefully she's not so prideful that she will refuse to change even if her conscience tells her she needs to for the betterment of the relationship.

She really has a lot of issues within herself

I think this observation by you, about your MIL, says it all.
You can't change or fix the issues she has in herself, only she can do that.

The holidays is hardly the time to expect a clearer communication with anyone. Too much going on, too many people and distractions.
