Identification of signers in Retail stores?

I work in a major retail store, and they don't use any identification for languages. However, I do sort of look for people I can sign with. As I am mostly a cashier it's fairly easy to identify who might be deaf. I've only had positive experiences so far even though I'm a newbie at signing.

    Hearing Impaired Term?

I work part time for a major retailer, and because of the design of the building out in the garden department where I work - it's a nightmare for someone with hearing loss. I often have to have customers repeat things. I now use the term, "could you repeat that, I have hearing issues"...

    How do Deaf people drive?

My own mother asked me this question last night! I am having hearing loss due to Meniere's - and she said, "well, if you go deaf you won't ever be able to drive again..." Told her there were MANY deaf drivers who did just fine!

    Ever done any acting??

Did a commercial once for a local restaurant in Sedona. Also did a play in Oqunquit, Maine. Never did want to be an actress though. My boss made me do the commercial, and the play was a funny accident. It was "interactive" dinner theatre and that was a trip in itself!

    Deaf wannabe!!!!!!!!!!!! So bad

I wasn't commenting on the fact that when one has fluctuating hearing one isn't "deaf enough". But rather that people tend to think one is faking it because one time something can be heard and then the next time not.

    Deaf wannabe!!!!!!!!!!!! So bad

I didn't think that of you, but thank you for your reply. I suspect there are people who want to be deaf because they want the attention that they THINK it would bring. You know, special treatment, sympathy, people going out of their way to make things easier for them. Of course when...

    Deaf wannabe!!!!!!!!!!!! So bad

I've been reluctant to post on this thread as I'm neither deaf nor can I classify myself as HOH. However, I do have fluctuating hearing thanks to Meniere's. I know my co-workers don't understand why I can hear something one time, and later on cannot. I am not faking!

    Meniere's?

Diet restrictions can certainly help, especially sodium and caffeine. Then there are those that feel that certain foods trigger it. Stress can trigger it. I'm not one who prescribes to the "just have to live with it". There are medications that can help, treatments, etc. But it is true...
