Making small talk with hearing strangers

That's one way of going about it, but honestly, I don't feel comfortable just ignoring people. I don't know about where you live, but where I live it's viewed as extremely rude.

Making small talk with hearing strangers

I don't see how acknowledging their presence is ignoring them.

Here's an idea faire_jour. Turn off your voice for a week. I know it's not the same as being deaf, but you can't stop hearing. You can stop speaking. So turn your voice off for a week. See if you have the patience to explain to every single person that you are mute, need to communicate with pen...

Making small talk with hearing strangers

Lots of times even after explaining people still don't get it and communication is still frustrating. I can't tell you how many times I've explained print on palm, in detail, only to have them yell in my ear or hand me a piece of paper.

Shel90 and LDNanna, did you guys just sign random stuff or did you reply to what you thought they might've said? I can see that being fun. "Oh it's good to see you again!" "Pink elephants." "How often do you come here, three times a week?" "I have two left feet." "I'm gonna go use...

You can buy groceries online? Sweet. How do you get them to your house? Unfortunately I can't avoid the bank cause ATM's are inaccessible to me. They have braille and audio but the audio only comes out of one ear and with the background noise it's already impossible to understand. I already...

I try signing but then they wonder how I could hear that they were there to begin with. I guess being blind adds another dimension. It's hard to let someone know you know they're there but you can't understand them if they talk to you.

Which of course wouldn't be an issue if we were all hearing.

Making small talk with hearing strangers

Great! I'll just stop buying groceries and other necessities, cause it might involve making small talk with a hearing stranger. Guess I should forget staying in touch with family too, cause that involves a good deal of small talk with hearing strangers. Yep, just avoid it all!

Making small talk with hearing strangers

But why does deafness equal unhappiness? And hearing equal happiness? The implication is better...than deafness. Just because of a few struggles? Audism.

faire_jour, framing a question as either/or forces posters into an awkward situation. There's a reason lawyers aren't supposed to frame questions as compounds ("Were you present at the scene that night and did you murder X?") because a yes means a yes to both, and a no means a no to both, and...

Do you see the audism in this statement?

Do you think sexuality is on a sliding scale?

That's not on the sliding scale. :giggle:

:gpost::gpost: You nailed it! Thank you, jillio. Minorities in general get put in this position where they have two options: 1) Play the educator role. Educate people in everything you do. Say upfront that your opinions are your own, your likes and dislikes are your own. Other deaf/HH people...

Disability for obesity related health problems

Not only is our food controlled, but what we're allowed to say about it is too. Anyone who's interested can look up food libel laws. source

Man that sounds delicious. Where can I find that and how much does it cost? Note: I usually have ramen for one meal and something else with veggies for the other meal.

Making small talk with hearing strangers

This reminds me of something that almost happened the other day. I've met a few people who are learning to finger spell to communicate with me more easily. We were in the mall, and they were practicing with each other. The security guards thought they were making gang signs. Luckily the guards...

Making small talk with hearing strangers

Nod and pretend to understand when it's a 5 second interaction. Would you seriously go into a long explanation about your deafness or hearing loss for every minor interaction? Who has time for that?

Do you think sexuality is on a sliding scale?

Yes I do, along with most things in life. I think the need to identify 100% as one thing or another is mostly cultural. Both my gender identity and sexuality aren't 100% on one extreme, but I call myself FTM and hetero for simplicity's sake. A lot like how many deaf people aren't 100% deaf but...
