Did you know that Clerc were asked if he will marry a deaf lady. he said no and prefer to marry hearing lady. This tells me that Clerc see deafness as pathology. *shrug*

I talked a little with M. Wilder. We spoke at first of Proctor and afterwards of marriage. He asked me if I should like to marry a deaf and dumb lady, handsome, young, virtuous, pious and amiable. I answered him that it would give me much pleasure but that a deaf and dumb gentleman and a lady suffering the same misfortune could not be companions for each other, and that consequently a lady endowed with the sense of hearing and with the gift of speech was and ought to be preferable and indispensable to a deaf and dumb person. Mr. Wilder replied nothing, but I am sure that he found my argument just.

Yea, I know that AG Bell married a deaf lady which is why I find it puzzling to why he had that view about deaf marrying other deaf people. I would have loved a good debate with him.

AGBell married deaf lady because his mother was deaf. I believe his wife was his student in his oral deaf education.

I was trying to say that USA didn't adopt at all.. just that it was brought over from europe over the time and there were oral deaf school already running during that time.

His theories and statistics on the causes of hereditry deafness were extremely flawed. Bell practiced a form of eugenics that proposed to eradicate deafness. The Nazis, as well, practiced eugenics, although in a harder form than that proposed by Bell as evidenced by their extermination of Jews and disabled in order to purify the race. One was a mild philosphy, one was an extreme philosophy, but the goal of both was the same. People object tothe extreme form, but are more tolerant of the mild form, even though both propose the the same end. To me, Bell's ideas are just as objectionable on a human level as were those of Hitler.

I posted my reply before the rest of the posters did. And yes, I have now read the rest of the reply. And the USA did adopt many of Bell's philosophies. There is an organization that bears his name still today that promotes the oralist philosophy of language acquisition and education. Bell did not just promote eugenics and what he termed the "well born". He also promoted philosophies that sought to disquise deafness and contributed to the marginalization and identity of the deaf as disabled. I find it very interesting that the organization that bears his name is the A.G. Bell Assoc. FOR the Deaf, not OF the Deaf. That in and of itself offers a clue to the paternalistic attiudes of these philosophies.

Thanks everyone! It has been so hectic all week and very stressful due to the end of the year duties, assessments, report cards and on top of that, my aide is out for the remainer of the year due to an injury. I am on the go alll day without a break..I am ready to drop dead!
