People who gossip have wayyyy too much time on their hands. *Rolling eyes*
I rather stick with rumors than gossip.
The problem that a lot of people have is that they turn rumors into gossip, which ends up harming others.
You know,,,, when people say the Deaf gossip a lot ...I tel them ..OMG I am Hispanic and they seem to be the biggest gossipers!!......so it's in every culture...it may seem you experience it more because you are around the same Deaf community ..but maybe you need to branch out and make new good friends? We all experience gossipers in our lifetime. Just be careful who you say things to and don't let small things bother you. It's just a question about this topic.
Well, I've met some Ddeaf/Hhoh
who says, "Ddeaf/Hhoh world easy gossip" because of small world?.
Some bad gossip some good gossip. bad habit gossip?
Is it okay to gossip bad things about people?
I don't mean to offend anyone who see this.
Why gossip?.
I see rumors as a way to confirm what I've heard. I see gossip as a way of passing on something that is intended to be shown as a fact.I have to say I agree with you. Either way rumors and gossips can still hurt person for all the wrong reason in the wrong way can cost the friendship to mess up.

Rumor: "I heard that he got fired." (Emphasize on 'I heard' because you don't know if it's true. You're just asking a question in a statement form.)
Gossip: "Did you know he got fired?" (Emphasize on "did you know" because that's like saying you know it's true and want other people to know that you know something they don't know.)
The problem that I've seen is that people turn rumors into gossip. Suppose I heard that a guy was fired. I don't know if it's true, but I don't care. So, I pass it on as a gossip... "Hey, did you know he was fired?" Now, I've possibly harmed that person's reputation. I've stated something as a fact when I don't really know if it's true.
That's why I usually keep rumors with my close friends because they know the difference between rumors and gossip... and know not to go passing it around as gossip. The rumors are something I like to check with my friends so I can determine if it's true.
You are so right!
that is the difference..rumor and gossip.
It is better to check the SOURCE of the rumor like where it came
from..like from the person who got fired..ask that same person, "is
it true you got fired?" not from the person who told you cuz sometimes
they twist the truth.

A couple Psychology professors at RIT wrote a book on the social and psychological aspects of rumors and gossip. (One was a professor of Social Psychology.)I have to agree with you and Defee on this and you both got excellent points how you both view that informations. I agree it's a pretty clear idea what you just explains. You said it well!

psst.. I hear jillio is awesome who slap my butt. tee-hee.
oh... hi jillio. *running away*
Yeah. It's very common among those who are usually jealous of themselves and are looking for ways to improve their own images... by making others look worse than they do.Yeppers, its been studied quite a bit in Social Psychology. People use gossip as a way to engage in upward revision, and increase their own status.

I might be doing bad in school and there's this guy who's doing better than me. So, I start gossiping... "Did you know that he missed class!? Boy, he's gonna fail!" If I can get 100 people to hear and believe that story, they will forget about me being a bad student... *evil cackling*
Isn't social gossip also a way of re-hashing social standards? Sort of like parables without the spiritual context and it didn't, necessarily, have to be proven?
