Why CI is bad for kids under 6 yrs.

To me this has little to do with the Deaf Community and people who use ASL.

It has to do with a group of people who can't wear Hearing aids anymore. We love what hearing aids gave us - sound, and we want to continue it. That to me is what a CI is, a more powerful hearing aid so I can hear.

Whatever makes u happy and it is your life. More power to u if they are giving u want u wanted! :)

Kind of like the scare tactic used on hearing parents of newly diagnosed deaf children....IMPLANT NOW OR YOUR CHILD WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO FUNCTION IN A HEARING WORLD, WILL NEVER READ ABOVE A 4TH GRADE LEVEL, WILL NEVER LEARN TO SPEAK, AND WILL BE FOREVER A FAILURE AND A DRAIN ON SOCIETY?

Exactly the kind of scare tactic that was used on my mom when my deafness was first discovered. She told me that she cried so hard for weeks thinking I would never be normal hence her decision to put me in an oral-only program with minimal support. I dont blame her for that but I do blame the audis and doctors who told her stuff like that. After AGBell's letter to Pepsi, it seems like the same view is still out there despite more education about ASL and deafness.

I have always stated it is none of my business if people want to get CIs. I have friends who have them. It is not a big deal...I just dont like the attitudes from the organizations that state how giving people a CI gives them more opportunies and stuff like that. The comparision between people who dont have them and those who have them. I never liked that..it would just start a war and get people to hate CIs for no reason. *sighs*

My coworker's wife got a CI surgery last week and many people at work chipped in to send her flowers. That is from a strong Deaf community right there.

Sure there will be always people against CIs. There will be always be people against the Deaf community and people who use ASL. Oh well.

Exactly. It is not the CI, it is the attitude of superiority that is portrayed, not usually by the CI users themselves, but by the relatives of the CI users, or the organizations that stand to make a financial gain from the promotion.

Oh, its still there. Just look around you.

Like the headaches and stuff? I know some people that the CI made their tinnatus worse and some made it better. It is interesting how that happens and of course it is probably too complicated to find the cause.

Yes. But since they are stimulating the 8th cranial nerve it is assumed to be a neurological consequence.

my tinnitus is gone
My migraines are gone
My facial numbness is half of what it was.
They don't have an answer. My doctor is interested in why. He did say, yes the migraines are from using hearing aids. Each person is different.

And I am happy for you. There are those that have had exactly the opposite occurance. It is believed to be neurological in origin. It may be years before they are able to determine exact cause and effect.

And that is a reasonable statement. CI is not about the above....yet some continue to bring the Deaf community into it by generalizing that the entire Deaf community and those who support the Deaf community are "anti-CI."

Yeah, why are they complaining about Deaf's "scare tactic" when they have been guilty of the same thing since the start of oralism.

Yesterday you said the audiologists told your mother that you would not be able to hear with hearing aids.

But since no one is actually saying that, except those who are anti-ci, it is not a fair comparision to the outright lies of someone like Harlan Lane who called the ci surgery brain surgery on 60 Minutes.

A made up statement like yours cannot be used to counteract an outright lie like Lane's, except in your world of course.

Have you checked out the copies and pastes from medical websites in Kalista's threads? Obvioulsy, they are saying that. You might also want to check out Deaf News. There are several posts in there that also provide the same message from the medical community. It is not that it isn't being said, or that it is unfounded accusation from some fictitious "anti-CI" movement. It is that the oralists simply skip over that which contradicts their views. Just because you refuse to read it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Sure and the moon is made of green cheese and BTW you know that the quotes have been messed up all day on AD.

I know you are hearing its the ability to listen that I question about you.

And I about you, as you seem to avoid the posts and the forums that fail to support your oral only agenda.

Is it me, or is there something really wrong with what's going on with the QUOTE commands?! That's making me confused.

I am sorry to tell you, yes, it is you that first got the QUOTE commands messed up. When everybody else quote you, it gets that way, too. In turn, when somebody else quote the person who quoted you, it also gets that way. I had to go back to edit my post so I can fix it just after Jillio quoted me. Jillo's quote is messed up because she got my quote before I can get back to fix it.

Just make sure that there is 'quote' inside the pair of brackets and again after the end of the quote. Also make sure the word 'quote' is all CAPS. The second quote should have a slash in front of it.

I agree it is very confusing to figure out who said what. :)

Oh, so it's my fault? Whoops. I deleted the last [q=] by accident.

Drew's dad - My cat slipped on some broken ice cubes today. Does she need therapy to help her get over her little slip and fall? I'm afraid that she won't set a paw in the kitchen anymore because she was so distraught about a life threatening situation. She currently has anxiety issues, and is taking happy pills for that, but now this. Man! Who knew having a cat can "cost a lot of money and a lot of risks". :giggle:
