Jazzy, thank goodness the audists in state department of vehicles haven't yet targetted the deaf as the federal government has. We deafies can still get licenses to drive non-commercial vehicles in all states. However, we who are totally deaf can no longer get a commercial driver's license.

I held a CDL for forty years, but when I went to renew in 2002, I was told I had to pass a hearing test. Of course I failed and was denied a CDL.

So that I could still work, the state of Montana issued me a special permit to drive (and go through DOT scales) only in a 100-mile radius of my place of employment. What kind of stupid logic is that? When deafies are 105 miles from home, they are no longer safe truck drivers?

When I moved to Oregon, I was issued another special licence to drive commercial trucks, this time good for the whole state. So now another driver has to take over the bee truck at another state's border. It's totally insane and unconstitutional.

All those years They expect me to lipread 100% like Sue Thomas FBI. That is not true and Deafies and HOH still have trouble making out lipreading which can be another word that look like the same word that someone speak the word. That really piss me off that hearing people think that Deafies and HOH can learn how to talk and lipread, no ASL. Also hearing people expect us to understand them with the hearing aid. They think that the hearing aid will make the HOH or Deafies who rely on wearing the hearing aid be able to understand them without the use of lipreading. Not true, either. Boy, that is what make me piss off for their not understanding our deafness and why we can not use sounds(only we hear noise, not sounds and feel viberation) to be like the hearing. They have a lot to learn about us being deaf. I do hope that there is every elementary and high school that will teach them about our deafness including other disabilities. That way, they won't have the misunderstanding of using the wrong altitude about our deafness. What a bummer. :crazy:
 
Let's make one thing clear! Not ALL hearies carry bad news. There are some of us (me) that are pretty cool actually. I mean I can hang with anyone in town and not make any waves; I'm cool with Deaf folks.

True. There are always a few that is trying to be understanding and try their best to accommadate us. I think sometimes we get so mad at those that don't that we tend to include everybody and that is little unfair to those that do try.

Wow! Stories like this never cease to amaze me!!! Just thought I have heard it all but yet, I still learn of new stories or situations regarding the ignorance of some hearing people!
 
What really ticks me off is when I dont quite understand something and when the person does repeat it they do this wacked out retard thing where the words are like

EYE SAY-AID TO GIVE ME THE NEWS PAY PER!!! - I mean just really dragging it out then using their hands in some sort retard wanna be signs. This happened to me alot growing up - I finally I got fed up one day and just did the same thing back to them-

"EYE AM SOWWY YOU ARE A WEE-TAWD!" then walked away.

I still get this occassionally but everytime I get it, I just throw it right back at them and the look on their face is like "oops".


Then one day back when my cousin-by-marriage was still working at my company we were sitting there getting our PPE on before going in to the production area and I saw her mouth something at me and slapping the table at me. Then I asked her to repeat it so I could lip-read it then she said "NO WONDER YOUR DEAF!"

Then I popped back at the top of my lungs - NO WONDER YOUR SUCH A BITCH! then she said - "I know it!" like it was something to be had, yeah right. Then I told her, "I was born deaf - your bitchiness was accquired." Needless to say after that she quit bothering me at work. But that's over with now because she got fired - boohoo for her. :lol:

We, deaf people, cant win. If we dont understand someone, it is our fault, if we speak up with our feelings, we are complainers or bitches, if we speak out against certain practices, we are close-minded.

I guess some hearing people want us to shut up and just kiss their feet or be a wallpaper without our own feelings or opinions. :giggle:
 
Hmmm, when I was at IHOP restaurant. The manager AND the waitress refused to serve deaf people and refused to communicate with us. (We had a hearing person with us) They refuse to serve the deaf community, so we wrote it down on the complaint card and we never returned to that IHOP restaurant again. Some of the times, they refuse to take orders from us at the drive thru fast food restaurant, too.

Sometimes hearing people don't expect to meet a deaf person out of nowhere and they talk without looking at you, so that's the problem until I tell them I'm deaf and they drive (those who ask for directions) or walk away because they don't want to deal with me.

Irony: One of my pet peeves is just meeting someone (for instance a sales clerk asking to help me or a washing machine repairman comi ng into my house) that I'm deaf. Before I can finish, I get flashed that vapid thumbs-up sign (above). Somestimes I ask, "Ten what?"

Aqua, I agree with Travis that painting all hearies with the same brush is unfair. It's also unfair to assume all people with some degree of deafness are members of the deaf community. I attended ONE local meeting of SHHH and found nothing in common with them. No one signed (except fluttering hands like that was supposed to help understanding while they yelled at each other). Everyone spoke fairly well (except for the yelling). The big complaints circling the room were about horrible cafeteria noises picked up by their hearing aids and that too many people complained about their loud radios and TVs.

I think why some use "hearies" as an all-inclusive term is that even hearies who claim to be sympathetic sometimes just don't understand the vast diversity among deafies.

Some are frustrated because we don't all use the same signs . . . or for that matter, the same sign language.

Some want us all to immediately get cochlear implants, forget all signing, and learn to talk.

Some wonder why we all can't speech-read like stereotypical super-deafie in movies and on TV.

Some wonder why many who sign ASL "write so funny."

Sometimes we're just an annoyance, something to roll eyes at . . . like when we want "them stoopid words" on the TV that get in the way.

It's a long list, so many of us wrongly stereotype hearies just like they stereotype us.

Yes it is about that, however I just wanted to point out that not all hearies are that way. I try to be fair and think about big picture..

My point is now people are saying that not all hearies are bad...we all know that. This is a thread about sharing our experiences that ticked us off about hearies so of course most of the posts will be about what hearies did to tick us off. Hope that was clear? :dunno:

Its not a hearing vs. deaf thing, some people are just jerks.

One peeve I have is some people assuming hearing aids work like glasses. Glasses can give people 20/20 vision but it doesnt work that way with hearing aids.

Hearing loss is loss, not unfocused hearing. Hearing aids help but its not like glasses wear it solves the problem.

Another annoying thing is when people tell you to turn up your hearing aid if you say "what" one too many times. They have no idea theres a limit to how much it can be turned up b4 feedback starts kicking in.
 
I never thought a resturant would refuse service to deaf people. Money is money.

Then to refuse deal with writing down the order is ludicrous. Doesnt the waitress write out the order for the cook anyway.
