What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

Some will call me hearing/vision impaired and when they do I call them deaf/sight impaired.

Oh, you should see their reaction..
 
I don't like it when hearing individuals laugh or look down on others with hearing loss because of the way they speak or communicate. I don't think they really have a clue what it's like to be without hearing.
 
Recently I was talking to someone who was using that term -hearing impaired - I said, no - hard of hearing <me> or d/Deaf - deaf people not impaired! While I might have be hoh and have LD, am not disabled-
 
People who don't believe I have a hearing problem!!
Maybe I read their lips or just guessed what they said..after that
they think I am pulling their leg!! It has happened.

when I am making a phone call and tell the person I am speaking to that "I am HOH and I can't hear you.", the person said " I can you just just fine!"
HTF is that going to help me! This piss me off a lot as a lot Hearies say this!
I tell the person that does not help me! I am want to yell at the idiot !

I hate that! When I first moved here I was outside throwing bread on the ground for the birds. One of the trustees came over to tell not do this. When the guy saw my HA in my left ear he had a look of horror on his face and thought NO OH she is retarded then the guy saw my HA in my right ear and the guy thinking Oh GOD this woman is very retarded! and he started to talk to me in a monotone voice saying one letter at a time! I was so damn pissed off! He was telling we do not fed the birds here do you understand me! I wanted to so badly say 'Yes I understand you and say I know sign
language too and give the him the finger!
 
lip reading can be very trieding . some time when there is nothing on TV I will
try watching a movie that dub in Spanish .I will mute the sound and try to read the person lips . I am able to read some of what being said and it is good practice for me!

I have the best rating you can get on your insurance ! In fact when the teenage boy t boned my car I had a witness that owned a crew of trucks and the guy said he would be hire we to drive one of his truck! He was so impress with the way I tried avoid being being!

That is true not all hearies are bad news! I stayed back in first grade and
I still was not ready to go second grade! My hearing teacher decided to give me a hearing test herself and she found out I was HOH and not retarted!
I could had end up send away some place for mentally ill people if my teacher did give me a hearing test!
 
Lately, I have been having a great experience with hearing people. I think my attitude has changed. I used to be so passive around them letting them belittle me or tell me what's best for me and then, my anxiety level would shoot up. For some reason, this past year, I have stopped caring and been more aggressive with them such as not letting them get away with telling me "Never mind", making them repeat themselves until I understand what they say, and telling them straight out that I am not good in large groups and I need their help keeping me in the loop. Oh my gosh, what a difference it has made. I have now made 3 good friends who are hearing non-signers in the past 6 months. Now, one of them is becoming better and better with his ASL.

Something in me just changed...dont know how or why but I am glad it did.

I was shock what my fiancee said about her worker. She told me that her worker mystery and confused so worker asked someone and said "why deaf work here, deaf supposed to stay home." Then someone told my fiancee what worker said. It really pissing me off!
 
From a hearie/interpreting perspective. I get a little angry at hearing people too! :giggle:

If I'm signing with a Deaf friend, people will constantly ask me what he/she is saying. In a private conversation! Also, a lot of people speak to me when I'm interpreting. "Ask him/her this...tell him/her that." UGH! Or someone will start talking to me while I'm signing (like I'm going to just stop one conversation to go to another). So rude!

Had a similiar incident yesterday

My hubby told me about what his boss said that pissed him off. He asked for two days off next week so he can take my daughter to her new school and go to a parent-teacher conference for our son since next week is my first week back at work as a teacher and I cant take off due to having no "vacation" time. His boss asked him why he needed two days off so he told her and she was like "That's sad that your wife cant do those things because she is deaf." My hubby was like , "huh?What do u mean?" She said that because I am deaf, I cant function in the real world and have to stay at home. My hubby was like "Hellloooo...my wife is a teacher and she returns to work that same week." His boss was like "What? She is a teacher? She is deaf!" My hubby just shook his head at her and walked away. When he told me that, I was thinking "nothing new under the sun." LOL
 
I think people make a lotta condescending assumptions! I myself have come across people with the tired thinking of Deaf can't drive, or say, oh it must be so hard to do it.... and I said to other person, I know d/Deaf folks and they drive, not this big deal, why do you say that?
Imagine someone who thinks this, finding out about d/Deaf pilots association :giggle:. I was looking on the Internet for other stuff and came across this and investigated for my husband because he is very interested in learning to fly <actually I would like to, also> and he flies RC <radio control>.
