What is Your Pet Peeve?

I'm fine with curse words. What peeves me is when people misjudge when to use them. I don't even mean in an uptight way, but an example is in high school when a student decided to say "shit" while giving a speech to the entire grade and staff of the grade. While I don't care if someone uses "shit" while I'm having a coffee with them and just in casual conversation, it peeves me when people use them situations that really don't call for curse words.

Isn't the purpose of shortcuts like "u" and "r" to make typing faster?

yes, but i also think it's done out of pure laziness. how much extra effort does it take to type a complete word? (warning: i'm starting to sound like my 7th grade english teacher. <giggle>)

For me personally, it takes the same amount of time to write "you" as it does "u." So I choose not to use shortcuts. But for other people typing may be a more laborious task. Also when people are texting and need to send off a message, sometimes the shortcuts save space on the small window screen.

i have plenty of friends who curse. while i don't care for their language, i don't comment on it either because i know i won't change their habits. i was raised as a strong catholic since age 5. cursing was strongly reprimanded, so that's where my attitude comes from.

Yep, when i became a Christian, like a year and three months ago, i worked hard to reform my cursing, so i dont like it, but sometimes emotions spill over.

Pet peeve: halfway open doors. They scare the living daylight out of me! I'm walking, walking, then I think it's an open doorway and all the sudden -- BAM!

typing in that fashion also makes reading more laborious. if we could type complete words when pc's first came out in the 80s, we can do the same thing now. as for texting, that's the main reason why people use shortcuts in the first place. i know one forum who won't allow you to use shortcuts because of members who must translate posts written in english into their native language. in my opinion, that's the way it should be.

i can relate. i have this problem at my university. some professors keep their doors halfway open and if i'm using my cane, it doesn't always find the door -- especially if i'm sliding it in the opposite direction.

Exactly -- the cane doesn't always find the door. Also if you're living with someone else and you don't use your cane at home, and they leave the door halfway open.

believe me, i understand. if i stub my toe or hit my funny bone against something, out come the curse words.

the maintenance person who used to work at my apartment building years ago was infamous for keeping my bathroom door halfway open even though there was a notation in my file that said i was a deafblind resident. i complained to management several times after smacking my face into the door because i didn't know it was open. <mad>

That stinks, my family does it to me.. grr.

Same. And also leaving stuff in the middle of the hallway. Even sighted people miss that kind of stuff all the time.

i hate this too. years ago there used to be a few residents who were infamous for leaving their walkers in front of their apartment door. after several people fell and injured themselves, a rule was created which bans objects from being placed in the hallway unless it's a package delivered by UPS or the postal service.

It's kind of sad a rule has to be made. My parents leave stuff in the middle of the hallway all the time and it drives me nuts. They especially tend to leave bags on the stairs to bring up or down the next time they go up/downstairs.

I'm sorry to hear about your maintenance person, Hear Again. Unfortunately most people never think about little things that make a big difference.
