I am thinking that I am not ready for adopting a dog. My hub is still working on the fence. it seems to me that it may be a long way to go. He and I haven't talk about it yet but i know it will happen, sometimes in aug or sept but i feel its wrong. Our kids will be very busy for sport activities coming up soon. :hmm: Seriously, i am not ready for a dog.

Dogs love to attend outdoor sports activities!

Botts, shush. She really doesn't want a dog and is trying to come up with excuses to tell her family why they shouldn't get a dog. :giggle:

:giggle: I tried so hard to avoid discussing with hub and kids about dog and its been about 5 years. I sort of almost am losing the battle with them.

I really wanted the same kind of dog what I was a kid. My old dog named Bosco. He was the good dog. I had no idea what breed he was. Yes He was a mutt. can anyone identify what two or three breed bosco was? If I wish wish wish I could find the same sized dog like Bosco. I would be happy.

Luckily my husband was a cat person like me. Of course, our kids wanted dogs (especially since their aunts had dogs). Told them they'd be 100% responsible for the dog and I knew they wouldn't be, so no dogs for us. If they needed a dog "fix" they could go to neighbors or their aunts. :)

I think Bosco was half Sheltie, maybe some Border Collie and Spaniel also.

LoveBlue was not correct, was she? You want a dog also?

How old are your kids?

My guess: if you feel like you're not ready for a dog, then you're not ready for a dog. They can be very time-consuming, especially if you were thinking of getting a puppy or young dog less than one year old.

And it is more often than not just a fact of life that no matter how much kids and hubby plead for a dog, it's usually Mom who ends up doing the lion's share of the work.

If you don't feel yourself that you really, really want a dog, then everyone is better off if you say "no."

On the other hand....(you KNEW there'd be an "other hand" from a dog lover, eh?) you might think about getting an older dog from a rescue or a shelter. Rescue organizations in particular often have dogs that were given up by elderly people or families whose circumstances suddenly changed, and they are more likely to be house-trained, past the chewing stage, and calmer in general.

My Pippin was a rescue, and was very easy to live with from day one. Never an accident in the house, likes people (in an introverted sort of way), never chewed anything he shouldn't. Just a perfect gem. He came from an all-breed rescue.

I agree. Looks like a spaniel sort of head, a Border Collie or Sheltie kind of coat. Doesn't look like it has the Border Collie "stare," though.

Bosco was a pretty good sized dog, wasn't he?

LOL at bott and loveblue, well well well, As a kid, I was a dog lover for many years even though I thought I was allergic to dogs and cats. I grew up with cats too but at this time, cats was outdoor that I didn't hang out with cats that much. During my college years, I met my hubby. He and I lived together and was going to get married. He brought up about the cats. I wasnt sure about my allergy so i went for cats. I found out that I did not HAVE allergy with cats but dogs. I am allergic to dogs in my college years and after that for about 13 years. BUT last 3 years ago, my in laws have dogs for years and I didn't sneeze or didn't get my eyes watery anymore. I even visited my friends who owns dogs. I still feel great. I hope i grew out of it!! Indeed, I am more of cats lover but am willing to give it a try with dog again after 20 years. I d like to give two kids chance to learn about dogs. I do not mind taking care of dog but I am nervous about getting a puppy that will upset my three cats. I thought starting with a puppy is the best thing so cats would know puppy's tendency very well then they all will be OK. I dont have patience but will get over with it. eh.

Perfect size!! he was a slightly bigger than cat's size but prettttty close enough. Bosco had very very curve tail. can you guys see that one? I agree about mixed border collie, sheflie but didnt think of spaniel. My mom found him from the farm in long island. We had tons of farms in long island years ago. Now there is no longer farms and now become more of condos. sad.

my kids are 10 and 8 years old. my hubby wanted a dog so bad too. I rather a puppy that i know that puppy is a lot of work but i know cats will get use to the pain in the butt puppy. Maybe I am wrong about it. :P they all will be ok than a 1 yr old dog. I am not keen on it because i grew up and adopted a several dogs who were over 1 yrs old and were not working well. We had bosco when bosco was 2 to3 months old. We had other old dog named dutchess when dutchess was 2 to 3 months old and it worked great.

Not necessarily. Puppies can be very rambunctious and they have sharp teeth until their permanent teeth come in. An older, calmer dog that is already used to cats might be a better idea.

Also, look very carefully at breed. Don't get a sight-hound, for instance, that has been trained to go after small prey. Some breeds will naturally be better with cats than others.

right, I am still unsure about puppy and 1 yrs old. I am still reading about what kind of breed dogs are. border collie can hurt small animals, beagly does bark a lot, jack russel isn't good around with dogs. LAB and golden reliever are great. But i am not crazy about them. damn. We plan to go to SPCA and look around what they have.

Have you ever looked at petfinder.com? Wonderful, wonderful site. You can put in your zip code and then be as specific or general as you desire about what you're looking for. You will see all sorts of dogs listed from shelters and rescues within whatever driving distance of your zip code you say. That can save a lot of wear and tear and running around, because you can see what's available before you go.

oh ppppfffttt - I don't believe in breed's stereotypical behavior. Based on my experience at animal shelter and raising dogs, all breeds are same thing to me. all breeds can hurt small animals/children, bark a lot or not, or are/aren't good with other dogs. it depends on how dogs were raised.
